Final Week
« on: August 03, 2007, 12:16:11 PM »
The grizzled commander steped atop the giant bolder overlooking a vast contingent of men.  In the backdrop is a scene of carnage and destruction.  Fires emanate throughout the forest, made evident by the massive billowing pillars of smoke.  The grounds are littered with dead and dying of friend and foe.

The old veteran places his hand on the hilt of his sword and smiles down at the group of men that are assembled before him.  They barely notice him as they talk and mingle amongst themselves, happy for a brief respite from battle.

Looking down at his trumpeter, Ortolf von Brennenburg nodded.  An elegant sound arose from the curled hunting horn that caught the attention of the men present.  A quick cheer erupted but Ortolf quickly raised his hands over his head to silence his men.

Silence abruptly came to this Sigmar forsaken land.  An eery quiet settled in and only the wind was heard as it howled intermittently.

"Men!" The general began.  "This campaign is entering the final hours.  I know you are all tired and frustrated."

There was a low grumble that came from the assembly as a response.

"Yes we have fought hard," he began again, cutting off the men before they could really get fired up.  "We have been outnumbered.  We have not known who to trust for much of this fight!

"But now I come to you as a friend and a comrade, not as your commander.  Look around you, see the chaotic scene!  Will we now accept defeat and whatever fate may bring us?  We will allow those brave men who have bleed and DIED on these fields to have done so in vain?

"Nay, my good fellows.  Nay!

"There will be a time, probably not long from now, when we will be forgotten.  What we have done here will be forgotten.  Do not let this sway you!  What we do here and now is vital to the preservation of our glorious Empire.

"If history should happen, by chance, to record our events, what will it say of us?  Hmm?  Will it speak of how after a struggle the men of the Empire rolled over like whipped dogs!?  Hmm?  Or will it say that despite the odds, through treachery and deceit, we fought like madmen!  We fought with the ferocity of Ulric!  We fought with the courage of Unberogens!  We fought with the strength of SIGMAR!

For the EMPIRE!"

I think this may say it in a more poetic fashion:

Be in their flowing Cups freshly remembered.
This story shall the good man teach his sonne:
And Saint Sigfried's shall ne're goe by,
From this day to the ending of the World,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in Altdorf now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods (and codpieces) cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Sigfried's day.

one quick way to find definitions is to use the "define:" command in Google. You don't always get the best answer but it works for most words.

Wyzer, boor is an English word, so that's why you wouldn't find a translation from latin.  :-)

Boorish behavour besides..

Best of luck to my fellow generals in the final battles.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our Empire!!!

Good luck to you all. Dont know if i get any battles on. Think my Talabheimers will be marching home to their little cave in the middle of the forrest and crater!

'Ignoramus' is hardly a Latin word, though. It's commonly used in English conversation.

Yup today is the last day I believe.  Results on wednesday IIRC.

As of now we are doing well 3rd overall this week.

And well done to Wissenlander's forces in the Talabec borders.. 1st this week so far and by far the most battles posted.  Excellent recovery chaps.

It's from Horace's Odes, actually. Wilfred Owen parodied it to express his distaste for war, that's all. This is the specific poem -

Quote from: Odes, 3.2
Angustam amice pauperiem pati
Robustus acri militia puer
  Condiscat et Parthos ferocis
    Vexet eques metuendus hasta,

Vitamque sub divo et trepidis agat                                  5
In rebus. Illum ex moenibus hosticis
  Matrona bellantis tyranni
    Prospiciens et adulta virgo

Suspiret, eheu, ne rudis agminum
Sponsus lacessat regius asperum                                    10
  Tactu leonem, quem cruenta
    Per medias rapit ira caedes.

Dulce et decorumst pro patria mori:
Mors et fugacem persequitur virum,
  Nec parcit imbellis iuventae                                     15
    Poplitibus timidoque tergo.

Virtus repulsae nescia sordidae,
Intaminatis fulget honoribus,
  Nec sumit aut ponit securis
    Arbitrio popularis aurae.                                      20

Virtus recludens immeritis mori
Caelum negata temptat iter via,
  Coetusque volgaris et udam
    Spernit humum fugiente penna.

Est et fideli tuta silentio                                        25
Merces: vetabo qui Cereris sacrum
  Volgarit arcanae sub isdem
    Sit trabibus fragilemve mecum

Solvat phaselon; saepe Diespiter
Neglectus incesto addidit integrum:                                30
  Raro antecedentem scelestum
    Deseruit pede Poena claudo.

And, for those of us who are not Latin scholars, here is a translation of it -

Quote
Let the robust youth learn patiently to endure pinching want in the active exercise of arms; and as an expert horseman, dreadful for his spear, let him harass the fierce Parthians; and let him lead a life exposed to the open air, and familiar with dangers. Him, the consort and marriageable virgin-daughter of some warring tyrant, viewing from the hostile walls, may sigh—- Alas! let not the affianced prince, inexperienced as he is in arms, provoke by a touch this terrible lion, whom bloody rage hurries through the midst of slaughter. It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country; death even pursues the man that flies from him; nor does he spare the trembling knees of effeminate youth, nor the coward back. Virtue, unknowing of base repulse, shines with immaculate honors; nor does she assume nor lay aside the ensigns of her dignity, at the veering of the popular air. Virtue, throwing open heaven to those who deserve not to die, directs her progress through paths of difficulty, and spurns with a rapid wing grovelling cowards and the slippery earth. There is likewise a sure reward for faithful silence. I will prohibit that man, who shall divulge the sacred rites of mysterious Ceres, from being under the same roof with me, or from setting sail with me in the same fragile bark: for Jupiter, when slighted, often joins a good man in the same fate with a bad one. Seldom hath punishment, though lame, of foot, failed to overtake the wicked.

High Commander Ortolf Von Brennenburg, Helstrom’s 4th Army:

Sir, you will immediately notice that this report is not written in my own hand.  I have dictated this dispatch with the assistance of Sir Breman Schwartz of Altdorf, who has penned and sealed this letter under my watchful eye.  This anomaly is best explained through my report on our actions of the past several days.

Commander Rodimutz’s herald found me in the forest north of Morr’s Gate two mornings past.  He told me of the great offensive moving up the Kaltfluss from the South and I readied the men for a surprise attack from the north.  We charged from the forest and surprised a small army of greenskins that were guarding a burned village that was being used as a supply dump between the mountain and their crude harbor.  Sir, it was not an easy fight but we got the better of them before the morning was out and sent them running.  Brother Lucas was gravely wounded and I lost my finest regiment of Reikland Swordsmen to the thrashings of a furious Giant.  I set the men to burning what remained of the village along with the greenskins’ provisions and plunder, reorganized the army and ordered an immediate attack on the harbor.  I marched the men hard in an attempt to cross the open plain and sack the harbor before the enemy could reorganize and drive us away.  Unfortunately, the enemy numbers were far greater than I had hoped and by the time we were in position for the assault, a huge force of orcs, goblins and evil dwarfs had fortified the port and were sharpening their blades and howling with delight.  I pushed my tired men into an all out assault and we charged across the burned ground under a hail of stones from rock lobbers and sinister dwarf rockets that seemed to be guided towards the men by some evil presence only to explode in toxic plumes of fire, cutting down the men with glowing shrapnel.  We continued through the killing field and bought our gun crews enough time to hit their marks with counter-battery fire.  We were beginning to push the enemy backward, for they were on the very banks of the Kaltfluss when the largest orc I’ve ever seen emerged from behind a unit of Goblins and headed straight towards my bodyguard and me.  He rode an evil metal contraption that belched brimstone and had eyes of flame and before we knew it he was upon us, crushing the dwarven plate of my Greatwords as if it were the flimsiest of tin.  This orc drew his sword and cut three of my men in half with every swing.  We didn’t have time to react, before I could issue a command, I alone faced the monstrosity and it crushed me under its bulk as it ran me over where I stood.

I must confess sir, that I do not recall anything further of the day’s battle and was rescued from the field by the Brothers of Sigmar during a lull in the fighting.  My sword arm remains badly broken but much of the rest of my body has been healed due to the constant prayers of the Brothers.  I believe my resolute faith in Sigmar is the only reason I am alive today.  I was told that by the end of the battle, neither we nor the enemy had gained the advantage though there were horrendous casualties on both sides.  The harbor was within our reach but alas, we could not dislodge the enemy and so Thabius did initiate an orderly retreat in the late afternoon.  The army did not win sir, but their spirit is not beaten and we have returned to the Talabec Road and are encamped there awaiting further orders.

I must confess sir that my Reiklanders are now so few in number that we are barely fit for active service.

Your Humble Servant,

Commander Dolohev Stonheim III
1st Reiklanders, Helstrom’s 4th Army
Commander Dolohev Stonheim III, 1st Reiklanders, Helstrom's 4th.  Recipient of the Nemesis Rune, Von Klaust's Laurels of Acclamation, the Scroll of Ludendorf and the Shield of Sigmar's Wrath.

I prefer Homer and Heroditus myself. I was going for Wilfred Owens paradied version, one of my faviourate war poems and essential reeding for anywone who thinks that real war is fun.
