The Giant File
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:04:34 AM »
At the opposite end of the size spectrum (re: The Halfling File), I'd like to try to put together a list of companies producing figures for giants. Again, I'm looking to add any that I'm missing from my list.

For now I want to limit the list to: sold as "giants" for 28mm ranges of figures (not going to include larger scale figures that look "giant" compared to 28mm) BUT I will include things like cyclops, etc. if they are "giant" sized, as long as they are generally humanoid (no giant four armed reptilian creatures, etc.)

This is what I can think of at the moment is:

Andrea (historical 90mm model - others available at the site, too.)

PhillyT - hatin' on giants since 2003!  :biggriin:

I think the battleforge ones look good if you are looking for a more cartoonish giant rather than a 'realistic' one.  The paintjob seems to reinforce the goofy/cartoon look, though that is their style.

Old Glory has a few, for dirt cheap.  $16 for 2 of them:

I too like the current giant, although I have none - I have several of the older metal ones, so have no need to buy a plastic one just yet  :biggriin:

The current GW plastic Giant is an abomination, it is hideous. There should have been a variety of options to be able to change it away from the ugliness it represents. It looks like an after thought from the OK range.
Thankfully I have the older metal Giant hefting the tree trunk, thank God for that model.

The Battleforge Giant is too big to be a 'Giant. It makes the GW giant look like a dwarf. It's more like a Titan size Giant and it comes with half a dozen head choices so I went for the Cyclops option and the goofy look disappeared to be replaced by something much more sinister.

The Black Scorpion Giant is an excellent model, though not quite as big a they make out it still has an imposing look on the table top.

See Gargoyle, this is why nobody can take you seriously.  That thing is almost as bad as those giants you were pushing a couple years ago.

Everybody takes me seriously Philly, in real life, it's just those craven few who hide behind behind their internet personas and moderating status who try to mock me.  :icon_mrgreen:
It is a sad forum where the mods openly mock the membership rather than engaging in debate.
What you don't understand Philly is that the GW Giant has been universally despised by a great many miniature lovers.
It's not a patch on the older Giants they created and looks more like a stretched Ogre than a Giant in it's own right.
It is a truly wretched model and GW could do so much better.
Fortunately others have.
The Battleforge Giants make it look like a dwarf, and I can't wait for the second edition Battleforge Giants to come out.
I also can't wait for the next edition of the GW Giant to come out and expunge that current wretched model from the shelves.
Never liked it and never will.
GW have done a lot better in the past...
GW should do at least three types of Giant, all different sculpts, to represent the differences there are in Giants.
Mountain Giants, Hill Giants, Fire Giants who forge their own weapons.
Giants have a rich history in Fantasy, it would be nice to see more of that reflected and I believe the models would sell well if a variation was produced, especially with different head options.
Be nice to be able to create a huge Ettin.  :icon_cool:

Gargoyle? I'm lost...

Anyway, took a look at the Old Glory and... ugh. The one looks like it's a giants head, arms and hands stuck on the body & legs of some significantly smaller creature. Actually... they all seem to have ape arms.

I'm not a fan of the GW giant. I don't care for the bowling pin shape. I do like the Forgeworld model, and I'm a little angry at myself that I sold mine (though it was the older version -- different head and weapon than the current one -- not as good as the revised model.)

Of the ones above, I'm looking at Warploque and Ultraforge. The Otherworld BS5 model looks great, but the price plus the added postage for outside Europe sadly pushes it a little beyond what I'd be willing to pay for it.

I'm so going to steal that one.

Anyway, for what it's worth, the GW giant is a very nice kit with lots of flexibility and some really cool parts. I'm not a fan of its enormous gut, but still. And converting it is very easy; GW itself has shown several cool different versions.

Gargoyle? I'm lost...

Justnorth is Gargoyle.  He changed his name when the flames and accumulated dislike reached a critical level.

As for hiding behind my mod status, we discussed how ugly those models were then and I still find them ugly now.  I do not have an issue with anyone not liking the current GW model.  It is stylized and I understand people not liking that.  What I find laughable are people who just chose to hate GW products for the same reason they hate the current economic model or government - it is trendy and hipster to dislike the norm or commonly accepted norm.

I think this one was mentioned above by Just North....it too is my favorite...I need to scrub the 1990's PJ off of mine and give it some love.  It is of course OOP but can be found on ebay...if you have deep pockets.

...Go ahead PhillyT...tell me how much you hate it... :biggriin:

That marauder giant is still actually one of the two best I have ever seen.  I still own most of one of those though I lost one of his legs and the head a few years ago.

I was not saying that all old models are junk, just that the overall quality of models today are leaps and bounds ahead of the old lines.

I can't decide if I should turn him into another chaos giant or just anteup and buy the missing components!

I am afraid that when I do decide I will find the missing parts and want to cry either way...
