[Julian]

The captain frowns. "Well, that is at odds with the testimony of two witnesses. Neither has any reason to lie, as far as I can see. Both saw those men at the scene of your fight with Bardin. Perhaps they were concealed, and emerged only once the fight was over?" He shakes his head, "this whole business is confusing. The facts don't add up.

"So, you are claiming the dueling laws as justification? Well, that could be a valid defense. It is usual however, for a duel to be witnessed. Neither party had a second, according to you. Bardin himself denies that it was a duel. Still, you may be able to win a court case. I can pass the charges on to the prosecutor if you insist. Though I would prefer the matter be resolved quickly. What is your decision - go to the courts, or accept my judgement?"

[Admund]

"We've been told a number of stories, Admund," the watchman says. "According to Bardin's other henchmen, and to Bardin himself, you were solely responsible for abducting and whipping the young lawyer. Bardin shot you in self-defence after you attempted to rob him.

"Max Breytenbach, on the other hand, says that you did bring him to the warehouse under Bardin's direction, but warned him of the danger and then tried to rescue him. Sergeant Kratz confirms that you provided him with the location of the two henchmen, which allowed them to be apprehended.

"It is not in doubt that you were hired by Bardin, who we now know is a spy for the city of Marienburg, on a mission to disrupt the supply of timber to Middenheim. I believe you came here directly from Marienburg, yes? Don't you think that's suspicious?

"Then, as I said, two independent witnesses put you at the scene of the fight."

"That's ludicrous! Why would I rob someone who has four barrels trained on me? Sir, this doesn't make any sense. I didn't whip Max Breytenbach. You can ask him yourself who swung the whip. I tried to stop the whole mess, and wound up shot in the head. I'm lucky that Sergeant Kratz was near to help, and I aided him in capturing Bardin's accomplices. If I was Bardin's man, why would I do that? Please talk to Herr Breytenbach and Sergeant Kratz again, they can verify all of this."

"A spy for who? Marienburg? I hail from Carroburg. I know nothing of this timber business, I'm no merchant. I rode in escorting folks for the carnival tomorrow under the employ of a dwarf by name of von Battenburg, but our company got dissolved after the new Middenheim taxes mashed up his coffers and our pay. I looked for work, and yes Bardin did hire me, but when I found out the masochist was whipping kids, I tried top stop it. Turns out doing the right thing gets you shot in the face, then dragged to a watch station and accused of being the bad guy."

"Listen, sir, why would I lie about this? I was nearly killed trying to keep Breytenbach from being harmed. Again, just talk to Herr Breytenbach and the Sergeant, they can verify everything. I've done nothing but cooperate with the watch."

[Admund]

"Breytenbach does confirm your story, and Sergeant Kratz certainly believes you as well. And, of course, Bardin's word is not good for much. I want to believe you, Admund, I really do. But there are still too many facts that don't fit. If this were just a matter of minor abductions and street fights, we could let it go. But now that we know Bardin is a spy, we have to be very careful.

"I need to report to the captain. You'll have to wait here."

"I understand, sir. At least, you have been reasonable about all this, and your own man sees the right of it. I'm here for whatever the watch needs. If you have any further questions, I'm here at your pleasure."

Admund will wait patiently for the man to return, and itch his scalp under his bandage.

"With so few crowns remaining it is difficult to complete the tasks set to us.   Though I suppose that such a shortage of monies will lead to some advantages later on," Mortus says.   "I was somewhat expecting a royal face on the crowns but it appears that the newest mint is the same as the older.   Such small things that interest us merchants.   That is a beautiful colour but I was always so taken with purple.   As a fellow merchant I would ask if you think that the business of the carnival would be profitable considering the expense of getting their so swiftly and whether or not I should taken the good doktor with me?   I am sure that he is interested in the carnival if it is such a meeting place for glove makers than any glove wearer would be interested."

Mortus will also glance around the room.   Jan's worry has her slightly concerned.

[Mortus]

Jan notices that Mortus is also glancing around the room. "Ah, you are wise to be alert, Miss Mortus. The walls do not themselves have ears... but there are often ears pressed against them. Or eyes at the window. In my trade, allowing information to fall into the wrong hands is disastrous... another tailor might sell my designs as his own.

"Yes, I think the carnival would suit the Doktor very well. He will have contacts to introduce you to, I am sure. One could learn much about gloves, and those who wear them. The journey would be a little hurried, of course. But provided you arrive before the end, you will not regret the trip. If you are late, well, you may find that gloves have become so popular that everyone who is anyone will be wearing them.

"I believe I will make you a gift of this pair," he says, handing Mortus the pair he recommended earlier, "purple is not your colour... whereas these will look very fine. Wear them as an advertisement of my skill as a tailor. They will, assuredly, open doors for you." Mortus catches sight of a small piece of paper tucked inside the left glove. She realises that Jan intentionally showed her that as he passed the gloves.

Just then, someone knocks on the door of the cell. A watchman enters, saluting the captain. "Message from the Law Lords' office, sir," he says, "urgent!"

The captain nods. "I'll take it in my office. Sorry to leave you in a hurry, Mr Stonebridge."

[Heinrich, Julian, Admund, Ragni]

Heinrich, Admund and Ragni are all brought to Julian's cell and locked in with him. The watchmen escorting them say that someone from the Law Lords' office will be arriving soon, and wants to see them all together.

"Boss!" Ragni says, "good to see you at last! I was a bit worried for a while, but I should've known you'd be all right. I don't like this much though - asked me a lot of questions. I thought I'd better refuse to talk, like I did at the other watch station. Didn't want to say the wrong thing."

Mortus takes the gloves.

"I thank you," she says.   "It is important that you advertize and I will be sure to tell any who ask about the wonderful quality where I got them and hopefully send business your way.   I was not so interested in the colour purple myself but rather thought that the reactions of others should I wear such a colour might prove enlightening.

I must also purchase a dress for the carnival.   It would not do to attend with being properly clad.   I trust that you have something suitable."

Mortus is willing to spend around 100 crowns on a dress and related cloak and boots.

[Klaus and Max]

Klaus and Max wait in the lobby of the watch station for some time. Eventually, a small man dressed all in grey enters, flanked by two bodyguards. A small set of balances is embroidered on his shirt in silver thread.

"He must be from the Law Lords," Max says, "I'll try to speak to him. Excuse me, sir! I am so sorry to approach you unintroduced, but this is a matter of the utmost urgency. My name is Maximilian Breytenbach, and I am a lawyer acting for Mr Julian Stonebridge, Mr Heinrich des Untergangs, Mr Admund Auerswalder, and Mr Ragni Greathammer. They are currently being held at this station on rather dubious charges, and face a potentially unjust punishment. As a representative of the esteemed office of the Law Lords of Middenheim, I am hopeful that you will intercede and ensure that all four are released without charge." He looks at the man hopefully.

"Mr... Breytenbach. I will forgive this unseemly attempt to use undue influence on the representative of the Law Lords, on the grounds of your extreme youth and inexperience." He sneers slightly as he says this, tilting back his head so that he can look down his nose at Max even though he is slightly shorter than him. "Law Lord Hoflich has given me clear instructions, which may not be countermanded at this stage... certainly not by... a student. If you will be so good as to stand aside, I must see the captain at once."

Max steps out of the way, too shocked to say anything. The man sweeps off. One of the bodyguards rolls his eyes, and the other smirks.

[Heinrich, Julian, Admund, Ragni]

The cell door opens, and the watch captain enters along with a small man in grey. The silver balances embroidered on his shirt show him to be a clerk from the office of the Law Lords.

"Gentlemen," the captain says, "I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. This case has proven to be far more complicated than it appeared... and your refusal to cooperate, Mr Untergangs," he glares at Heinrich, "did not help. I can forgive Mr Greathammer for his defiance, since he is only a child..."

"I'm not a bloody child!" Ragni says, "I've got my bloody beard, look!" he points to his rather short beard.

"You are too young to know when to speak and when to keep your mouth shut, Mr Greathammer. Now, Mr Untergangs has no such excuse. I have no option but to punish him appropriately."

The clerk speaks up suddenly, "All of them, captain! They are deeply involved in the Dwinbarsson affair, even if it is unclear precisely how." He speaks to the group, gesturing emphatically with one hand, "either you are allies of the spy, or you are enemies who should have told everything you knew to the proper authorities! A bomb, exploded in Freiburg on the eve of the carnival! It could cost the city a great deal of money... we need to reassure the citizens. Dwinbarsson will be tried and then publicly punished. All of you will remain in the city until his trial is complete, as we may need you to give evidence. You will therefore be released and free to act as you wish... provided you do not try to leave the city.

"However, you must also be punished for the harm you have caused to the city... whether it was by action or inaction. Captain, Law Lord Hoflich has specifically ordered that these people be soundly whipped. I am to observe the punishment, to ensure that it is appropriately severe. At once, captain!"

The captain looks unhappy, "Law Lord Hoflich oversteps his authority. If he wishes these people to be whipped, he should bring them before the courts, not force me to do it."

"Don't be absurd, captain, you were surely going to whip them anyway? What difference does it make?"

"Very well.  Mr Julian Stonebridge, Mr Heinrich des Untergangs, Mr Admund Auerswalder, Mr Ragni Greathammer: you are to be whipped immediately. Have you anything to say before we proceed?"

"No. I will not be whipped. I will face my accusers and be allowed to know who brings these false charges against me. You have no case, and no evidence except a pair of witnesses that you refuse to name. I am innocent of all these accusations and I would expect you to have evidence before you falsely accuse any of us of conspiracy or whatever the hell you claim we have done, which, by the way, you have been very vague about. I have not had a trial. I have not been made to understand what exactly I am accused of. This is not LAW. I would rather die than be whipped for a crime I have not committed without a trial and conviction."

"You had a chance to speak in your own defence, Mr Untergangs," the captain says,  "you refused to do so. Nevertheless, you are within your rights to ask for a trial, if you will not submit to summary punishment."

"No, this is not acceptable," the clerk says, "Law Lord Hoflich insists that no specific charges are brought, other than that of 'actions harmful to the security and prosperity of the city-state of Middenheim'. They are to be whipped and then released. A trial will only delay resolution of the Dwinbarsson matter and negatively impact the carnival." He waves his finger at Heinrich, "I assure you, the Law Lord is quite entitled to do this... you may bring a complaint afterward, if you insist."

"This is ludicrous! My testimony was verified by your own Watch Sergeant Kratz, and all accusations against me were refuted by the victims of Bardin's violence. You're accepting the word of this spy or whatever the hell he is over the testimony of your own men and the innocent! I came to Middenheim only for your bloody carnival, and now you want to flog me before I even get a chance to participate? I'm an honest sell sword who found out his boss was corrupt, and tried to do something about it. I've been shot, and now will be whipped for it? Simply unacceptable."

"I demand a representative of Law Lord Ehrlich be sent at once. Do not whip the innocent just because you're confused by the the ramblings of some dwarfs with grudges or whatever this nonsense it."

"I have heard quite enough of your excuses," the clerk says, "you are sufficiently guilty in the eyes of Law Lord Hoflich himself! And don't imagine that Law Lords Ehrlich or Wasmeier would oppose his decision, once made. The Law Lords always support each other." He shakes his head. "Such a fuss over a few lashes! It will be over in a moment or two. Proceed, captain."

At the captain's order, the watch prepare to lead the group outside to the yard. Max and Klaus are still waiting in the lobby.

"Sir, I must speak to you!" Max says, "are my clients being released? No? I cannot allow them to be punished without due process of law! I demand that they are given a trial!"

"You have no standing to make such a demand, boy," the clerk says, "be quiet."

"If the boy is really qualified, he can lodge an appeal after the event. The Law Lord's command stands, captain!"

"I'm afraid there is nothing I can do, my lord," the captain says to Klaus. "If I refuse to comply with the order I will be relieved of duty. And Law Lord Ehrlich would never countermand the order of another Law Lord. Such a thing is almost unheard of. I must proceed."

Heinrich, Julian, Admund and Ragni are lead out to the courtyard. A whipping post stands at the center.

A look of shock is on Klausīs face there are even tears coming to his eyes... it seems the horrid experience of being flogged comes back to his mind and he doesnīt want his friends to have to suffer the same.

"Julian...Heinrich....I am terribly sorry. This isnīt right." He holds Max by the arm so he isnīt going to interfere and end up being flogged himself too again.

As Admund is walked out into the courtyard, he jerks his elbows free of the watchmen escorting him and snarls through his teeth, "Get your fucking hands off me. I can walk myself to the post."

Admund with a sigh of resignation will take off his Hauberk and shirt, and walk to the post. "Captain, you best be ready to feel the whip yourself. Whipping the victims of crimes won't keep you at your post long."

Admund will await his lashes at the post. His normally icy blank eyes are filled with rage, and will remain fixed on Klaus Metzger.

"Klaus, don't hold me back!" Max says, "I might be able to stop this! Um... somehow!"

Two watchmen take up position beside the post, carrying whips. They fasten chains around Admund's wrists, so that his arms are above his head.

"Hurry up, I don't have all day!" the clerk says, "the Law Lord wants my report as soon as possible."

Admund's words clearly trouble the captain. His expression turns hard. "twenty-four lashes. Begin!"

[this picture is from the 'law' section of the Middenheim book! In case anyone thinks I make up all the whipping stuff!]

The two watchmen make their lashes alternately, pausing between each stroke. They raise angry welts at first, but the skin soon begins to split at the intersections. Before long Admund's back is bleeding freely.

[Admund Cl test = 17, pass]

The pain is incredible, but Admund withstands it with hardly a sound - nothing more than an occasional grunt.

At last, the whipping is over. The clerk comes forward to examine the damage. "Yes, very good. The skin is suitably cut - the Law Lord will approve. He may go."

The chains are removed and Admund is released from the post.

[Admund is reduced to 0 wounds, and requires medical treatment!]

"Let's have the next one," the clerk says.

"I have done no wrong! I demand a trial! This is not justice!" Heinrich fairly growls in his rage, spittle flying as he yells his discontent. He will not fight the whipping, but will stare intently at the law clerk, making an attempt to memorize his face.

"I am sorry lads." Julian says to Heinrich, Ragni and Admund. He is genuinely upset and imploring them with his eyes to see it.

"I chose not to kill Bardin. I stand by that decision, but if you didn't know me... or hadn't been drawn into my personal conflict, you would not be here now.

"guess the rounds are on me later, eh?" Julian's attempt at a joke falls flat, as he can barely raise a grin of his own

"Don't worry Boss!" Ragni says, "you've been like a dad to me. I'll stand by you no matter what! These bloody humans can whip me all they want, and it won't make me respect you less!"

Julian removes his shirt and walks toward the post. The chains are lowered so that he can be bound but still have his feet on the floor.

Max shouts an apology to Julian in dwarfish. The captain orders him to be silent, "if you don't keep quiet, boy, you'll be joining them."

Once Julian is in position, the captain says, "you men: change your whips. Use the heavier ones, or you won't break his skin."

The watchmen rearm themselves with dwarf whips, and stand ready.

"Twenty-four lashes," the captain says, "begin."

As before, the watchmen alternate strokes, crossing Julian's back in an x-pattern. His tough dwarfish skin shows no marks at first, but as the lashes accumulate, welts begin to appear. Eventually, the skin splits and bleeds, just as Admund's did.

[Julian Cl test: 05! passed by a mile]

Julian remains calm throughout the whipping, enduring the agonizing punishment with complete fortitude. At last, it is over.

"Yes, a good set of cuts again," the clerk says, "the Law Lord will be satisfied. Release him and continue!"

[Julian is reduced to 0 wounds, and requires medical treatment!]

Julian is unchained.
