Mortus takes a few seconds to try and figure out what is going on around her and then gives up.   Her mind hurts, sharp stabbing pains that assault the base of her skull.   She closes her eyes and tries to think of what happened but the pain assaults her again and she abandons the effort.   She drifts rather than walks with the rest of the group, stumbling every few steps for the first while until her body strengthens again and she can support her own weight again.

Julian takes out his tools and goes to work on the safe.

[Julian safebreaking test: 24, pass]

He opens it easily. Inside is a small collection of strange items: three teeth from a dog or wolf, a leg bone from a pig with notches cut into it, a silver hand mirror, a woolen scarf, a carved wooden ornament shaped like a ship, and four table knives. Right at the back of the safe is a folded piece of paper, stuck in a crack - a note!

The note has been written in clear, careful block capitals. It says:

Memorise and then destroy this! You must not make a mistake or you will be discovered.

Graf - poison - Boldo
Chancellor - drug addict - Brunhilde
Ar-Ulric/Emmanuelle - love letters - Br
Champion - hypnotised - Br
Ehrlich - niece kidnapped - Br
Gotthard Brandt - sex cultist - scapegoat
Pavarotti = threat. Br is looking for leverage. Do not confront.

"Look, a note showing how they controlled people. of course, we already discovered and sorted the Chancellor, ar ulric and Ehrlich. but the Graf is being poisoned! we need to figure out how. if we can stop it he will return to his senses I'm sure, and the city with a strong ruler will be so much more secure, just the same for the Karak's.

and, huh, Brandt is just a pervert afterall. I'm sure his family would be so disappointed.

If Pavarotti is a threat... perhaps an enemy of our enemy is our friend. I don't trust him, but perhaps he knows something"

While on the way to Hoflichs Office Klaus sees Mortus struggling to be on her feet and offers her support if she will take it.

As Julian opens the safe Klaus face shows a puzzled expression about the strange assortment of items stored in the safe.

"I wonder if those are of any significance...I donīt have a clue though what they could be about. Maybe one of our mages could check if they have any magical properties."

"I agree with you Julian.....I really wonder how Pavarotti is a threat to their plans maybe because he could find out that the Graf is poisoned or more important have a cure to it? I think finding this Boldo and figuring out what poison he used and then cure the Graf might be our first priority. I am a bit concerned about the shapeshifter calling Wasmeier to help...also how he seemed annoyed about maxīs letter...what if he is involved into all of this? I think we should keep him uninformed about anything new we find out until we can be sure that he is on our side."

Mortus will accept Kluas' help, resting almost her entire weight on him until they get to the office, where she will lean against the wall.   She looks a little confused when she hears [or sees] the names in the letter, as if something is bothering her but she doesn't way anything.   She can feel her strength returning slowly but she is still confused as to what happened.   There must have been a magical burst when the shape shifter died or something.

"Boldo sounds like a halfling name, perhaps?" Max says, "he could be a cook or some sort of kitchen servant. Um. Anyway, we do need to find the poisoner as soon as possible! If we can find out what poison has been used, then maybe Pavarotti will have a cure. Or if not him, someone in the city will be able to help."

Max pauses, then says, "Uh... I wonder if... Klaus, you think Wasmeier might be involved... well, his office is nearby. Someone could have a look. I would be willing to do that."

"Oh, I didn't think about there being magical traps," Max says, frowning, "um, that's a bit of a problem. Maybe we should forget searching Wasmeier's office until we can get some solid evidence against him."

[Information: neither Mortus nor Ulrun can do anything to detect or disarm a magical alarm or trap! Ulrun's spells could be used to prevent normal noise being heard outside the office, and he is also able to magically open locks.

Both Mortus and Ulrun know that a wizard can only have a single active magical alarm spell at a time. So if Wasmeier had one on his office, he couldn't also have one at his home.]

"So we need to search Hoflichs House and find this Boldo, I think we also should have a talk with Pavarotti and find out more about him than we know already so far. Should we split up again or stick together? I feel we need to hurry otherwise the person who started all of this might get away with most of his plans foiled...or like a cornered rat bite."

"That's true, Mortus, but we don't have any right to search there... I was wrong to suggest it." Max says. "Maybe some of us should look for Boldo here in the palace, while the others investigate Hoflich's house?"

[If Mortus or Ulrun follow Klaus's suggestion and check the random objects in the safe for magicalness, they find that they are all mundane items.]

Admund still looks slightly unwell. He leans on the desk in Holfich's office and looks through the papers with Max, "You're right. His style did change around two months ago." He says flipping through papers that Max is going through on the desk. "It makes sense though. When Heinrich and I went to the flogging of that law clerk, I kept an eye on Holfich. He was clearly enjoying the flogging. I'd wager this shapechanger was posing as Holfich long before we even got to Middenhiem."

Admund leans against the desk with folded arms watching Julian opens the safe. He's also confused by the random objects in the safe, but the note draws his full attention. "Gods damnit, I knew Brandt wasn't the mastermind. Look at this list. Everyone at court is being manipulated. Who's left? Who could be behind this? I mean look, this rules out almost every major player at court, and I hardly think that someone like the court minstrel is trying to take the throne."

At the suggestion of Wasmier, Admund rubs his face in fustration. "Sure, the man is the only one we don't know that well, but he's done nothing but appear squeaky clean to us....That's the trick though. Not one person at court is squeeky clean. Why is Wasimier clean? He's either the only pure man in town, or somehow involved. He's worth looking at."

As the others talk, Admund sits quietly, mulling over the options. He finally pipes up, "Whomever is behind this is going to find out their grand scheme for replacing the Graf with a shapechanger has failed. We need to act and get evidence before they clean up any trails or flee town. Whomever this 'Boldo' needs to be caught quickly before he figures out that we're on to him. We also need to get to Holfich's house before someone else does. Once we have a better idea of who's pulling the strings here, we can go after them."

"How should we do this? Shall we split up? I think investigating Holfich's house is important. I can take Ulrun the wonderful, here, disguised as Holfich and go see what I can find. Max, think we can get an escort arranged with the Knights to make it look normal?"

"Yes, I'm sure we can arrange for a small escort of knights," Max says, "since Mr Ulrun will be disguised as Hoflich, we'd need an escort or we'd look suspicious. I'll go and ask."

He returns shortly with four Knights Panther. They don't look especially happy to be there. "The Law Lords have asked us to escort some of you to Law Lord Hoflich's house," the leader says, "I assume you are ready now."

[Admund, Ulrun, Max, knights => Hoflich's house
Heinrich, Mortus, Klaus, Julian => stay in the palace, look for Boldo
Is that what you want to do?]

"I will need a few minutes to prepare." Ulrun needs to remagic his points up if he's going to wander around as someone else for a while. "I will be casting magic to be under the illusion that I am Hoflich. Whilst we are moving it will be imperative that you treat me as though I am him." he says to the knights. "The house will definatly be watched so we must make a good show of it."

He will have them wait a few minutes whilst he medidates. When he has restored he will cast 'Look like that guy' with enough points to walk to the guys house.

Mortus will go with the others [Kluas etc.], though she is desperately aware of her need to rest.   She will meditate while Ulrun is doing the same

Mortus and Ulrun both meditate for a short while. [Regain 4 MP].

Admund, Ulrun and Max head off with the knights [continued in next post].

Heinrich, Mortus, Klaus and Julian go to the kitchens in search of Boldo. They don't have far to go. It's now mid afternoon - the kitchen staff have cleared up after lunch, and are hard at work making preparations for dinner. Vegetables are being chopped, birds plucked, and pots of stew being stirred.

There are four other doors leading from the kitchen: a double set go into the dining room. Two more lead to a workroom, and the last to a store room. There's also a pantry across the corridor.

Nine people are at work in the kitchen: four halflings (all male), including one with an impressive chef's hat that's almost as tall as he is, and five humans (two men and three women). When the door is opened, the halfling chef glares at the group. "Hey, what do you want? I'm busy!"

Finding the list, confirming their theories and giving new leads, has distracted Julian from his malaise.

He raises his voice in answer to the chef.

[Admund, Ulrun, Max]

Ulrun assumes the appearance of Hoflich. The knights are clearly unhappy about this, but attempt to put a good face on. ""We'll do our part," the leader tells Ulrun. "Just don't draw any attention to yourself."

Even so, the sight of Hoflich walking around does draw considerable attention from the other knights they encounter on the way to the main gates - they've heard conflicting accounts about him, so that some think he is dead, some that he is a traitor, and some have even heard stories that he is a demon in disguise. The knight-escorts handle the explanations.

Soon, the group have left the palace grounds. In the Square of Martials, the ice-dancing contest is over. The magically-created ice sheet is now being used by the carnival crowds. Max says to Admund, "If we weren't so busy, I'd have a go! We used to skate a bit back in Ostermark when the river froze over. I haven't done it for years. Oh well!"

People stop to look at the the group as they pass, curious to see who the knights are escorting. When they see that it isn't the Princess or anyone else interesting, they look away. The Law Lords might be important to the city, but they aren't instantly recognisable to the people.

Hoflich's home is in the prosperous Grafsmund district, close to the palace and only a few streets from Ehrlich's house. It occupies a large plot on a corner, and has two walled gardens. The house has two levels. All of the ground-floor windows are shuttered.

The large side garden is surrounded by an 8' stone wall - there is a small gate at the rear of the house providing access. There is also a double set of gates at the front side of the garden, which go into an attached stable building.

The smaller garden is at the front of the house. The front door of the house is reached through here. The gate is closed but not barred. Opening it reveals a neat rose-garden, and a fish pond. A gravel path leads to the house door.

Admund is sure that someone is watching them. He looks up, and glimpses someone duck back from an upstairs window in the house.

"We would usually leave after escorting the Law Lord to his door," the leader of the knights says quietly.

[Ulrun's spell is still running. His current magic point total is 8]

[Heinrich, Mortus, Klaus and Julian]

"What would the Law Lord want with that lazy little bugger?" the chef says (his voice is very loud for a halfling). He gestures with a large wooden spoon he's holding. "I've had to beat Boldo three times this week already! The bugger's always thinking about something else, instead of keeping his mind on his work." He turns to one of the other halflings. "Drollo! Where's Boldo got to?"

Drollo looks up from the chicken he's plucking, "Dining room, chef! Cleaning under the tables. You said you didn't want him under your feet in here, since he dropped that platter at lunch."

"Great Mother Esmerelda, so I did! Well, there he is then," he tells the group, waving his spoon at the doors to the dining room. "Keep him as long as you like! He's no bloody use to me. I didn't want him in the first place, but I was told I had to have him."
