"Billy!" Julian exclaims, a smile creasing his face as soon as he recovers from the surprise.
As he greets the crew of the Hound he says "Well we certainly made the right choice of captain, you've done well."

After Heinrich's announcement, Julian shakes Heinrich hand with grim resolution "Sad to lose your axe Heinrich, but your brother must have something serious. May Grungi's blessing go with you, although I'm not sure a demon slayer needs much blessing, eh? Time for one last pint?"

To Billy, Julian asks "I'd love to see just how well you'd done Billy, you got papers?"

"Aye, we been through Carroburg, chief," Billy tells Admund. "You got friends there? Ain't nothing bad happening there, as far as we saw. Docks were good and busy."

Billy looks happy as Julian praises him. "Like I said, chief, I just done my best. You gave me a chance when no one else would, and that means a lot. I ain't sorry to miss some of that crazy stuff you gets up to though! That bloody castle..." He shivers, remembering the horrific Castle Wittgenstein.

"Young Tommy here does the books," he says, indicating the halfling with bushy sideburns, "coz I ain't learned to read, and ain't plannin' to. Tommy, fetch the books for the chief here!"

"Aye, captain," Tommy says. He scurries onto the boat, and returns with the Hound's ledgers. They do indeed show that Billy has made an excellent profit with the funds Julian and the others invested.

[I'd work out the numbers, but it doesn't seem important!]

"We're planning to leave soon," Billy says, "the cargo's near loaded, and the tide's just about right. But we got time for a quick drink. Got some good beer aboard that'll do the trick." He goes aboard, and returns with a small keg of beer and some mugs. "Got this from the Pelican's Perch, just over the water there," he points south, to the other side of Suiddock. "Ain't a bad brew at all."

When everyone has a full mug of beer, Max gives a toast. "To Heinrich, who's saved my life more times than I remember! Good luck in Altdorf, and may all the gods watch over you! And to Billy, the best captain on the river!"

Ragni cheers raucously, and downs his beer. Some of it sloshes onto his chin.

As the Hound is being made ready to depart, a man approaches Billy. He's a pale, wiry man with lank, greasy hair. He looks about fifty, and has an underfed look to his face - his dark eyes look sunken. He's wearing a dark hat and cloak.

"Excuse me, Mr Harefoot!" he says, "I need to discuss outstanding taxes and duties before you set sail. Unless you can advise me of a representative for your trading company here in Marienburg, I am afraid you cannot leave."

Billy looks puzzled. "I done all that stuff already."

"Uh, perhaps you could tell us who you are, sir?" Max says.

"I represent his trading company," Mortus says quietly.   "Could you please show me the documents?"

The man turns to Mortus. "Madam, the documents are being prepared; my instructions were only to obtain a contact address for their delivery. It was reported a man was loading cargo illegally at midnight last night. This cargo has not been assessed, nor was the loading observed or performed by the Stevedore's Guild. The latter is a fine, which is what concerns me. May I have an address for the Watch, whom I represent, to send the notice for the fine?"

Admund chuckles. "Ahh well, it's good to be back in Marienburg..." he says shaking his head. Admund spits on the ground and folds his arms.

Max tries again to get the man to pay attention to him. "My name is Max Breytenback, sir. Can you tell us your name, and show us some proof that you represent the revenue office? I am a lawyer - though not yet registered in Marienburg, since I am newly arrived."

Billy looks indignant at the talk of illegal cargo. "Ain't nothin' like that been on the Hound! Me and my crew was on board at midnight, and we didn't see nothin'."

Mortus looks bored.

"A man was reported to be loading cargo illegally," she says.   "That seems a little vague don't you think?   What cargo was this man loading?"   She turns to Billy.   "Could I have the manifest please?"   She turns back to the man.   "Can I see your badge of office please?"

"Mr Harefoot, you and your crew returned inebriated just before midnight, and went inside. A human male, picked up by a Watch patrol, was the loader if the cargo. According to this man, it was a small box of valuables. He has been arrested."

Turning to Max "Mr Breytenback, I represent the Watch, not the revenue service. I am here to obtain information only. If you wish to make enquiries, by all means do so. My name is Rutger, and I am a bounty hunter. Enquiries should be made directly to Captain Graveland at the Suiddock barracks."

To Mortus "Madam, it is not unusual for this to happen. Boxes of valuable cargo are always being loaded after dark to avoid excise, especially on Elven and Lustrian goods. Still - I am only here to obtain a contact. If none is forthcoming I will return to Graveland immediately. He is however not as polite as I."

"And how do these people who normally retrieve these goods?" Mortus asks.   "And couldn't you just bring the man here, he would know where the goods would be loaded, if they were loaded and unload them and cease with this problem.   I must admit that without a sign of your office I am inclined to disbelieve you."

He sighs. "Madam, the man is in a cell for his activities. As I have explained, I am a bounty hunter, I have no office to speak of. An address, or I return the Captain and let him know you were uncooperative. Your choice, I still get paid."

"This bardge is part of the trading fleet of the House of Basanduine," Mortus says quietly.   "The headquarters of which is in Nordland.   I am the new representative of the House in Marienburg.   I don't find myself inclined to believe you given the vagueness of your story and the trust I have in Captain Harefoot.   I don't have time or effort to waste on random vagueness.   I have no desire to hand good money to random undocumented people.   By all means come back with the captain and I will discuss the matter with him."

[before Sig's character leaves]

Max says, "Sir, any documents you have can be delivered to the Middenheim Consulate on Embassy Row, where they will be held until we arrive to retrieve them. We have no wish to violate any laws, and will pay any genuine fines or fees that are due."

Billy hands Mortus the manifest. "Wasn't drunk!" he says, furious, "my crew was a bit the worse for it, but I wasn't! If anyone was on the boat after dark, they was a bloody thief!"

[After Sig's character leaves]

Max says, "Well, whether that man comes back with the watch or not, I don't see why it should delay the Hound's departure. I expect we can handle whatever the problem turns out to be."

"Aye," Ragni says, "most likely he's a con anyhow."

Everyone says a warm farewell to Heinrich and Billy. Then they watch as the boat casts off and sets sail for Altdorf. "Gosh, I hope we do see them again," Max says softly, "I know we should... but you never know what's going to happen."

They watch as the boat vanishes into the distance. Just then, a group of watchmen, wearing the distinctive black caps, arrive at a fast walk. There are four ordinary watchmen, led by a tall man with piercing eyes. A brace of duelling pistols hang at his side. The watchmen are accompanied by the man they spoke to a short while ago - he points out the party to them.

"I'm Captain Graveland of the Suiddock Watch," the leader says. "I'd like you to accompany me to the watch house to discuss an important matter." He speaks firmly, as though he hasn't even considered the idea that they might refuse.

"Captain." Admund acknowledges with a respectful nod. "What's the meaning of this? Are we being detained?"

"Of course, Captain. We are friends of the Watch." Admund says. He will accompany them to the Suiddock watch house.

He glances at the others to see if they will come.

Should have gotten on the damned boat with Heinrich, Admund thinks to himself.

Admund has heard of Captain Graveland. He's said to be fanatical when pursuing a target, and to use brutal methods when questioning suspects. The merchant families dislike him, often complaining about him to the city's watch commander. There are also rumours that Graveland is corrupt.

"I'm happy to speak to the watch," Max says. "Perhaps Admund and I will be sufficient? My comrades have other business."

"I would like to speak to all of you," Graveland says. Then he realises what Max just said. He looks at Admund. "Your name is Admund? Not Klaus?"

"Klaus is a friend of ours," Max tells him, "but he's in Middenheim."

Graveland turns to [Sig's character]. "Was there another man with them before?"

"everytime we get to a new city we get gouged" julian grumbles to himself.

although weighing up his options to turn down the request, Julian decides it is best to play nice, for now. "you'll never meet a more honest bunch, Captain" Julian forces a smile

"Yes, Captain, I am Sir Admund Auerswalder. Sergeant of the watch of Middenheim. We have just arrived in the city on a trade mission. There must be some confusion. What can we help you with, Sir?"

"The other man who was with us is called Heinrich," Max says, "he left because he has urgent family business in Altdorf, and could not wait. I assure you that Klaus is in Middenheim."

Graveland listens to what Max, Admund and Julian say. "There has clearly been an error somewhere," he says. "Nevertheless, I do need to speak to the owners of the Faithful Hound, whoever they may be. But it is not a matter to speak of in public. This way, please."

The party go with Graveland, the watchmen and [Sig's character] across the swing bridge to the far side of the Bruenwasser Kanal. The headquarters of the Suiddock watch is a large building that looks at least two centuries old. They go inside. The desk is manned by a rather elderly dwarf with an iron-grey beard. "What's this, captain?" he says, "dwarfs! They can't be under arrest, surely?"

Graveland glares at him. "They are helping with an investigation, sergeant." His tone makes it clear that he won't explain any further, and the sergeant takes the hint.

The captain leads the group [and Sig's character] into a bare room with a few chairs in it (enough for everyone). He motions for them to sit down.

"You have been told that a small box was found aboard your boat," he says, "and that it was a customs matter. It is rather more serious than that. The box contained a book that I have discovered is connected to the worship of the Ruinous Powers, and also a pendant that could signify membership of a forbidden cult."

He watches them closely to see how they react.

"Captain, we arrived in the city yesterday evening via the Middenheim Road. We are on a trade mission from Middenheim to sell fine dwarven goods. We spent the night at the Salted Salmon in Ostmuur before heading to the 'Change. On the way members of my party spotted the Faithful Hound moored on the waterfront. We spoke with the vessel's captain, Billy, for about thirty minutes before you came. I never set foot on the boat, nor do  know anythin' about a box with a book about some ruinous power. You can check with the watchmen at the gate and the Salted Salmon to verify our story."

'Don't go chattin' up th'Watch and stay out th'way.' Pasco the Tilean always said with his suave grin. Damned if I'll be flogged by this cunt, Admund thinks to himself. Haven't been here a day and i'm already being questioned by none other than Captain Graveland.

"Rutger" raises an eyebrow when Admund says they arrived yesterday evening, and looks at Graveland.
