converting Bretonnian men at arms...
« on: March 11, 2013, 04:12:17 PM »
Hi all,

I already have one unit of halberdiers, now I want to make a second unit. (more halberdiers!! )
I want to create a unit that is a little bit different.

I was toying with the idea of converting some bretonnian men at arms to empire halberdiers.
Would this be a good idea? Is it easy to make them look more imperial? (with green stuff and empire bits)

I am looking forward to your tips

Cheers!

State troop heads would be a good start. You'll have a few spare and there are plenty of them on Well Known Auction Site (tm).

I love the look of the Brettonian men at arms, but they are quite different from empire infantry (in my opinion).
I think you might be better off using halberd arms on Empire Militia bodies.  (that's what I plan on doing  :-))
Good luck!

Actually yes, justt mix in some imperial heads and you should be fine.

For my Empire army I have some fluff that says they are in the badlands seeking glory. So they have some mercenaries in their army in the form of Crusading Bretonnia knights and infantry(using empire rules). They are painted in knights hospitalar colors but instead of a red cross its a red sword(looks similiar to a cross).

I also did this so I can use them in my bretonnian army too.

I personally don't think the Bretonnian Men-At-Arms suit Empire at all, but that's just me. They'd be better if they had standard Empire style shields but their arms are part of their big tower shields so you kind of have to use them. A better option as above would be using Militia bodies with halberdier arms if you want something different or even tracking down a heap of random bits. You can use 6th Ed Spearmen bodies with Greatsword heads and halberds or you can try and find some 5th Ed multi-part plastics and update them with Greatsword/Archer/State Troop heads and/or Greatsword legs. You could use some archer bodies as well maybe for some different poses.

Unless of course the look you are after is Bretonnians fighting for the Empire, with feathers, in which case yeah, the Men-At-Arms with Empire heads and halberd tops will be fine.
There are three things each man judges another man by;

1. The size of his codpiece
2. The amount of skulls he carries
3. The length of his feather

I think they can work just fine for milita or even a state troops unit. You need to have them look consistent for the later, of course. I don't see anything really wrong with just leaving them unconverted and doing the work with paint. Just leave off all the obviously Bretonnian components and given them a nice paint job.

I've seen excellent examples where that conversion did work!
I've also seen examples where it did not

may I suggest Perry miniatures european mercenaries?

Thanks for your response,  :-)
I heard a few good ideas.
I have tought about perry's european mercenaries but the problem is you only get 12 halberds.
The old empire halberdiers also seem to be rare and difficult to find.

I think I will stick to converted bretonnians, or maybe artizan halberdiers?
Has anybody experience with them?

Cheers!

The Perry mercs come with a bunch of Halberd heads also. Idk if it is enough for the whole unit but you can easily find more on the internet.
Artizan is a great company and all their ranges are amazing. Look in here for some: http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=6724.125
You should check out Old Glory if you are on a budget. Their Lansknecht halberds are pretty good but kind of monopose but how can you argue with 30 figs for $35!? http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=PIL-03

But anyway whatever you do PLEASE don't try to convert Brettonians. It is really hard to pull off in a proper empire army.

I think the best option, is to buy 2x the 20 landsknechts deal from artizan.
I can buy them halberds from perry's.
Cant wait to have a proper camera so I can make an army blog   :smile2:

Cheers!
