Halberdires size?
« on: February 28, 2013, 09:02:31 AM »
Hey guys and girls I'm starting a new empire project,
I've picked up 10 state troops as testers and made them as halberdier's,
I plan to get the battalion box soon so that will give me 30 halberds.
I want to play warrior priests so I will put one in there and maybe run as a horde of 40 is that sufficient?

40 is a good number.  You can suffer 10 wounds before losing combat effectiveness of your horde.

40 is sufficient, although I find 50 to be the sweet spot.

Get a crown of command and you'll have a fine fighting force.

You should maybe consider 50. I roll with 50 in my 2000k list, with FC and a Warrior Priest. My opponet has no ideas what to do with those, I chop them all to pieces. In really large battles, I've seen units of 200 (!) halberds, but that's just over the top.

40-50 is the sweet spot;  30 is too small, 60 too big.

Personally I plan on using three hordes of 40 (working on the third horde right now)... Never used them with 50, only with 40 but most units struggle with just 40 of these, so 50 should be even better... Dealing with such a horde requires a serious comittement from your opponent.

Be sure to add a Captain, too... Hold the Line will keep your Halberdiers in the fight even if they are losing.

Hordes are hard to maneuver due to their wide frontage.  I think taking 3 blocks will almost force your army to only move in a straight line.

Indeed, and they are Called Dwarf Warriors (or, more specifically, Dwarf Longbeards)... As far as Empire troops go, they are about as good as it gets...

That's true, it just makes deployment so much more important... However, taking multiple hordes makes it harder for your opponent to avoid them...

Trouble is, there are lots of units out there that won't look to avoid a Halberdier Horde - they can take it head-on and win, even with support. You really expose yourself to this if you bring 3 of them, because you likely won't have anything that can intercept the foe. You want to bring units with different matchups, so that you can handle a wider variety of situations. Consider that a 5-man Demigryph Knight unit clocks in at a similar price to the Halberdiers, and they will crush low-Strength attack spammers, which would deal serious damage to a block of Halberds.

Skaven Plague Monks for example.  I5, WS3, S3, T4, A2 + FRENZY.  Plus the re-roll hit, re-roll wound banner if your opponent has planned well.  This can wipe out a Halberdier horde in pretty short order.  However, a 3 man unit of Demigryphs will eat them up and shrug off most of the returning attacks.

Skaven plague monks are I3 luckily    :closed-eyes:

Halb horde is good, with support of course. Gryphs are good even whitout support. Still you need to fill core with something  :icon_lol:

For sure. I'm not saying Halberdiers are bad - they're my Core unit of choice. But if your army consists solely of them, chances are you'll have some problems.

I use 48 with Arch Lector (Crown of Command + Meteoric Iron + Screaming Blade?) and the BSB (handweapon, shield, dragonhelmet). They have never disapointed me in the battle... And you can give them great support with Huricanum in the back and/or Magic...

Anything between 15 and 100. What are the relevant parameters and how is this a tactical question?
