Steam tank pursuit into fresh enemy
« on: May 30, 2013, 02:04:15 PM »
I'm new to using steam tanks. Here is a situation that confused me while playing vs Ogres:

I generated 5 steam points and put them all into my steam engine. I then drove into a unit of four Ogres (the ones holding the guns) and did my d6 +5d3 impact hits. The stank won the combat and the Ogres broke. I assume I roll 5d6 for my pursuit? I pursued into a deathstar Ogre unit so on my opponents' turn I would count as having charged when we resolve combat; what impact hits would I do? d6 or d6 +5d3?

Help!

Steam tank can't pursue.

There's more. First of all, you can only ever put a max of 3 steam points into any function, which means d6 + 3d6 max. Secondly, you only do impact hits in close combat on the turn you charge. In subsequent rounds you grind in the movement phase. You could still win a combat with the steam gun, the Engineer's attack and/or a flank bonus but as mentioned, a Tank cannot pursue or overrun.

In short: Read the book carefully.

In all fairness the stank has a lot going on and it can be complicated.

Which is why I said it should be stickied.
....perhaps an all encompassing thread. Perhaps with a name like 'Steam Tank FAQ'.

It's easy to miss or make mistakes with the STank rules -- particularly after so many changes over the editions.

Thanks for understanding guys; when I was a teen I could spend hours reading rules but now, with a family and full-time job, its all a blur with the occasional moment of clarity!

I feel your pain. I was rolling a d6 instead of a D3 on the misfire chart for ages...ouch.

First time I played it I piled 5 steam points into the engine -- turbo charged steam tank. Well, for 1 turn anyway till I realized my error.
