The Games Workshop battle mat
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:38:40 AM »
I'm serious, at last, about building my gaming table.
I need one to playtest my game. And, ultimately, if I want to play a game of warhammer it would be easier to have a battle-table instead of a too-small diningroom table.

So, I was reading about the Games Workshop battle mat (25 euros) and how it was good quality, compared to some of the other grass-cover mats you can buy at local hobby stores. I couldn't find it on their website though. And thus, I found myself phoning the local GW store in my vicinity.
"No sir, we don't stock the battle mat anymore."
"Oh, why is that?" I asked.
"GW in their infinite wisdom," (he said it in Dutch, but it had the same ring of resignation to it), "have chosen to discontinue it. We now sell a modular board set made from plastic. It's slightly more expensive though"

That sounded even better!
"Really? Cool. How much does that cost?"
"250 euros, sir."

WHAT THE FUCK???
Really????

So, for selling something for 250 euros, they feel obligated to discontinue something which cost 25 euros???
Do they actually inhabit the same world as I do?

Say you're a father with a son who wants to start playing Warhammer fantasy?
"Oh Paps," he'll say, "I have to have it. 250 euros for the board, 40 euros for paint, brushes and glue. 60 euros for a unit of orcs, 120 euros for 2 units of goblins, 30 units for a unit of goblin wolf riders, 60 euros for a couple of chariots and a kidney for a couple of heroes."

Is GW actively discouraging people from starting the game?
They've priced me out of the bloody market anyway. 30 euros for a box of 10 models... and you need units of 40...
It's complete madness.

A unit of 12 Celtic horsemen (which fit nicely in a Bretonnian army) costs 12.50 euros.
A unit of 40 mantic dwarves costs 30 euros.
A unit of 10 orc boar riders from mantic costs 20 euros.

Anybody buying GW stuff must be mad or rich.

Too many still buy to the insane prices and the competition has so far not managed to get out a decent ruleset that hooked as many players.

There are loads of skirmish games out there but no mass battle system with as good a support, new toys and easy mechanics.

Well, my skinny little German friend, my own game is nearly ready to be play-tested.

Interested?

Demons, monsters and lots of average humans; yes.
Steam punk and black powder; no.

If you want, I can mail you the rule-set. I should have it prepared for proper testing within 2 weeks (including at least 6 different armies and how to build them).

What is this rules-set...

Also for a gaming mat plain felt can be good, especially if you have an airbrush to touch it up. I could quite easily get a 6x4 felt mat for £10. They do tend to wear after awhile, but the high quality felt will last years.

Sure thing I have a look....you should copyright it somehow before you send it out to random people though.

Oh, I'm not sending out to random people.
No, I'm sending it to people I reckon I can trust. Or, at least, people I think I can murder should it become neccesary.

Or both.  :|

I picked up new Lizardmen and High Elf armies this summer because a local game store went out of business and sold me the stuff at 50% off.
I would never do this at full price.  In today's economy,  GW has passed the mark of sanity in pricing.  I doubt prices will ever go down,  they will just nosedive off the cliff and go bankrupt before they change anything.

I am lucky my gaming group has a GW fanboy who thinks everything is reasonably priced.  So hes bought, painted and flocked a full plastic gaming board which currently lives in my gaming room.

MrDWhitey has a very disturbing avatar.  I hate that clown.

The GW rollable grass mats were beautiful things. I'm glad I bought two before they were discontinued. They actually are machine-washable, too.

Of course, but I would suggest a cool wash no more than 40degrees - and keep the spin down to under 1200 revs.
Fabric conditioner is also a must - my troops get really pissed off if the 'ground' is not soft enough.

I would expect doing that to fill my washing machine with green hairs and leave none on the mat.
