Modernising 7th empire to 8th -2500pts.
« on: November 27, 2013, 11:15:44 AM »
Hi, long time lurker here.

Quite recently friend of mine got hit by the dreaded warhammer bug and is looking to return to the hobby. He then deemed necessary to challenge me to a game. I am now showing symptoms for warhammer bug as well. However, my empire was basically done during 7th edition and the collection is in need of proper modernization to face his high elves.
I am looking to go for 2400-2500 points. The currently presented list is what I basically have, excluding undesirable/bad units, such as Griffon, pistoliers and more flagellants. These undesirable units will probably be used, until they can be replaced with something more suitable.

HEROES
Wizard lord 225
- 4th level, fire, dispel scroll

Warrior priest 85
- barded warhorse, shield, heavy armor

CORE
Crossbowmen (10) 135
 - musician
 - archer (5)

Crossbowmen (10) 135
 - musician
 - archer (5)

Knights, inner circle (11) 305
 - lance, musician, champion, standard bearer

SPECIAL
Flagellants (12) 144

Flagellants (12) 144

Flagellants (12) 144

Great cannon 120

Great Cannon 120

RARE
Helblaster volley gun 120

Total: 1677

I am thinking the list needs two 'big' units. I find steam tank, crazy wagons and chicken riders aesthetically unpleasing, so I will not be adding them. So choices would be some of core infantry, knights and/or greatswords. They however need character support to be able to bunch above their weight. Thus, something like warrior priests, arch lector (altar possibly) and BSB are all heroes I am thinking about to help out these units. Anyhow, any thoughts in how to transfer this collection from 7th to 8th?

Altar is my safest bet. Its a good model if you play it as a buff wagon (dont try to fight with it). Throw banishment + prayers 6" bubble+ 18" ld bubble +6" hatred for around 270pts.

Arch lector, heavy armor, charmed shield (vs cannonball), dragon bane gem (vs fire spells and stuff) + war altar (no need for terror , its bad in 8th). 264pts if i remember correctly.

I play myself with small units of flagellants. Realy good countercharge!

You don't have enough Core points. Yours totals to 575 and you need 625.

Hmm, yes. I forgot that. But its not many points. Perhaps warbanner for knights and/or some five man detachments. Are minimum sized melee detachments worth anything these days? With the changes to detachment panic rules, I am slightly worried they cause panics around them very easily.

Altar is my safest bet. Its a good model if you play it as a buff wagon (dont try to fight with it). Throw banishment + prayers 6" bubble+ 18" ld bubble +6" hatred for around 270pts.

I have indeed been interested in adding war altar. I think that it is a bit harder to use if it is to be used in conjunction with knights. Furthermore, I believe, that core infantry needs more buffs, than just hatred to start shining. These assumptions leaves greatswords as most interesting choice.
So, that would mean, in my mind, addition of two units of greatswords, BSB and war altar and reduction of either one flagellant unit or one warmachine.

Hmmm, are you still intersted in working on this list? I can look up my books, but I lack the most recent, pre-AoS, errata....

Given his last response was more than three years ago, and his last activity on this website more than two, one can suspecte his interest has waned somewhat.
It is not enough to have no ideas of your own; you must also be incapable of expressing them.
