I think he did a great job in Murder on the Orient Express, I really enjoyed that movie!
I'm glad I did listen to my wife to watch it with her :-)

I am beginning to contemplate going back to a movie theater again for big picture watching.  Will probably do it during a weekday to reduce risk, but need to check out how these local small studios are doing things, and no plans to return to a big cinema soon.

I am skeptical of this ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gdm40MPYnw

... especially with the blatant mention of Apple in the preview.  And it is unfortunate it is being released on Apple TV.

1917 was real good. Very excellent movie construction. The long shot with minimal editing is very good.

I'm actually interested to see Robert Pattinson as batman. I've seen him in some more serious stuff and he's actually not to bad when he's actually trying.

The reviews of Mulan disappoint me. I was hoping for an epic. Not what it seems they made.

I've pretty much heard its being panned by Western and Eastern audiences. Considering that Disney+ is charging $30 to watch it (on top of the $15 subscription) and they removed 2 of the best characters from the original movie, I don't think there's going to be much love directed at the movie.

Ouch ... I could go to theater for less than that.

Not that I will, nor am I encouraging it.

No, thats not entirely it. Its how they changed Mulan’s character.

Spoiler warning

Mulan is basically a superhero with crazy powers, and her only challenge is hiding her powers until she doesn’t.
So it suffers from ‘Rey’ syndrome instead of actually meaningful character growth and development. In the original Mulan gains the skill and confidence to supplement her courage and determination to then go on and lead an army and save China. In the new movie she has no challenge at all really.

Watched Birds of Prey. It was ok.
Some interesting ideas they could have done much more with.

Thats my feelings about a lot of movies these days. Good ideas, interesting plot outlines, but not enough work done with them to actually make something.

I just saw Frozen 2, and I have to say, I like the first one better.

It was "ok" at best until

SPOILER They find their parent's shipwreck END SPOILER

After that it got exponentially better. I think, for me anyways, its because up to that point it seemed to only have a cool mystery.  The songs, jokes, and some of the other scenes seemed to try to rehash moments from the previous film, until we get to the spoiler. After the spoiler part, the movie really came into its own. I just wished the first part leading up to it "went for it" the way the spoiler and events afterward did. I usually don't give #/10 scores but I felt like this one was a 7.5/10. It was good. Better than okay, but not great nor amazing. The first film, on the other hand, blew me away and was deserving of a 9 or 10.

_____

I recently watched The Pirates! and wow, that was fantastic! Its made by Aardman studios (Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Early Man) and I was surprised at how much I liked it. I assumed it was just about misfit pirates when I saw the trailer way back when, and it is, but the writing, animation, and voice work was phenomenal! Its well cast with Hugh Grant, Martin Freedman, David Tennant, and Imelda Staunton. No spoilers but its about "Pirate Captain" and he wants to win the 1837 Pirate of the Year award, but when filling out the entrance form he realizes he hasn't done anything noteworthy to win it. So he takes his crew and they go a-pirating.  After a bit of bad luck they run into a historical figure that steers their adventure to London, which has a deadly anti-pirate policy.

I honestly don't know what else I can say about it without spoiling the movie, but it made twists and turns that I didn't expect and it was enjoyable all the way through. Its available on Netflix and worth the watch if you want to have a nice laugh.

Everything Aardman makes is gold as far as I'm concerned. I loved Pirates and always loved Wallace and Gromit.

Yes. Also if you're a fan of Aardman, check out Farmageddon on Netflix too. Its a Shaun the sheep movie (see TV thread, I posted about Shaun the Sheep around the time I posted here) and its great.

I have not seen "Flushed Away" but I am told by Aardman fans to avoid it. That said everything else they've made has been great!

The local cinema is running nothing but back to back sessions of Wonder woman and Trolls. I wound up seeing Wonder woman.

I'm beyond fed up with the '80s nostalgia porn' trope as well as the 'Matrix-esque' fighting sequences. On top of that, the CGI nearly made my eyes bleed

I didn’t mind it at all.
Regarding 80’s nostalgia - is that a comment at Kobra Kai too?
We have all the 60’s nostalgia stuff with MadMen and countless other shows and movies. I don’t mind the 80’s getting some attention.

Its also much better than the dumb Bourne Identity and Taken style fast and super close choppy edits where you can’t see anything but a blur of images.
