3D printing
« on: March 13, 2016, 11:08:59 AM »
I just bought a small 3D printer.

Been toying around with it. Do you have any toughts on the subject ?

First prints looked reasonable, not wow for rough scenery and such.

What have you printed? Any pictures? For scenery, is the plastic strong enough to hold a lot of weight?

I have been thinking and watching this for the past few years. Still not sure how close it is yet - but hopefully your feedback is the best i will get because it will be specific enough about our hobby.

So far I've only printed some parts for reel support on the printer, a couple of toys for the kids, a Tie fighter and a 15 mm Tiger tank.

All these things were printed in PLA. Because of the size of my printer I am limited to smaller things, since assembling multi part kits is still a bit scary.

All things considered I am fairly happy with the reults, but we are not yet at miniature quality. Printing components is feasible (shield bosses and such), but so far it's far more work to get the files ready and print + glue them than it is to simply mold them. I'll be experimenting further, but if you consider getting into this game, I fear my cheapo entry level printer just won't do. Which is what I expected really...

That said, it is very much fun to do, and with a few lessons I am sure I'll get the hang of it.... eventually.

From the little I have seen, and discussions with No1Son they could be used for simple single plane items - like the side of a house, or panels for making a wagon/cart.
Someone did post a wagon they had made with a simple printer about a year ago as I recall.

Wheels would be useful.

I've repaired a couple and printed a fair bit. What type is it? Resin based or the hot plastic variety?

The quality tends to be lower with the plastic ones, though that's because it also costs £3000 less... They also take longer to print more than one item with the movement. I'd advise keeping an eye on the delivery system, I've seen one brand repeatedly get it wrong because it can't bring the plastic through fast enough and reliably. If there is an option to slow it down then usually the quality drastically improves, but the delivery method is somewhat limiting, you're always going to get tree barkesque designs around the edges on most prints.

Outside if the really unaffordable ones its too early to invest for me. Id wait until it comes down. I worked for a high end brand and it was still poor on the output IMO. Resin is better and they're doing some exciting things with flexible resin but not quite yet! For a toy its fine though!

I hadn't thought of doing buildings. The layering process actually just adds to the effect of the wood grain.

Mostly i'd tried flat/rounded things!

They look great though.

The buildings look fantastic. I saw in the bash picture thread it looks like you also printed a hangmans platform? It looks pretty sweet as well. It looks like a great idea to print a lot of the smaller scenery that might get used, especially for the skirmish games.

Very nice Soth but what I am interested in really is what no one seems to be asking..........how much is the cartridge (plastic refill?), how much of the cartridge is used up per building (assume it is one of the regular buildings you showed us, say the house) .......in other words what is the total cost per house/ building and is it worth one's while? ........also how much time is needed to print each house?
