GW's Made to Order.
« on: October 06, 2016, 08:44:40 AM »
Seems GW wants turn "last chance to buy" into "any chance to buy" by allowing people to order OOP models.

More details on October 15th.

This would only be interesting if they sold old metal miniatures at the old prices (from 2008 for example, before they discontinued all of the 90's miniatures). But what are the chances that this will be the case.

Indeed, I would like to be able to buy some olders models, but if it means paying 30€ or more for a single human size character or similar abusive prices, i'm not sure I would buy even one.

I'll sell you them at 29e   :engel:

As en Empire player, you know what I would like ? The old 6th edition plastic state troops sprues, they had their flaws but where better overall than the new ones, while still combining well with them (and they also combine well with the militia sprue).

Sure, I can also buy plastics from the Perries for cheaper, but to buff some of my state troop units I wouldn't be against buying a few more boxes of those older plastics, provided of course that the price is not too extreme ...

I've heard rumours of everything they've ever made included.  I find that very hard to believe.   I suspect this will be limited to the Brets and TK stuff, with a "This Week we are doing a limited run of these X products"  and they'll cycle them occasionally.    Or they'll have a register for interest on a kit, and once it hits a certain number they do a production run.

I approve of making OOP stuff available again, especially if it includes much older stuff, including the specialist games ranges, but I can't see in my head how they can make it viable without a lot of restrictions, or a long waiting time.

If it covers they entire back catalogue, I can only guess that's what will go on sale first:  A catalogue.

I'm speculating, but do they have all the old moulds, or will it be limited to CAD designed stuff that can be 3D printed, or just stuff that was in Finecast or metal, though hopefully they make it from FW Resin rather than finecast.

I'm intrigued, but it depends on what will be available, in what material, and what price before I get excited about it.

The only thing I've seen from an actual GW source (above) specifically mentions the recent "Last Chance" section of online store. That seems to indicate a fairly recent and limited range of figures. I think everything else is wild and hopeful speculation at this point. As with any GW rumors, I'll believe it when I see it.

I hope this is a start to get back at catalogues and mail order that existed during 6th edition where you could order even single metal bits like  sixty  Karl Franz heads . :biggriin:
And I hope the WHFB miniatures will have the square bases , i don't want to see old glories adapted for age of leeches.

I assume you mean the one on this page?

That's what I meant about the beret - I don't have him though I have added to the ones I have with greenstuff berets.

I have some of these - but I think they were plentiful anyway.

On topic - this 'offer' will purely be their way of getting rid of excess stock, and/or getting some value back on still healthy moulds where they can.

I bet some of us will have more old "bits" in our boxes than they will offer.

We do have the regional bits swap section still in the CT of course.

Well at least the Bloodreavers are 5 for $15, which is certainly better than the Stormcast crud at 3 for $15.

One thing to bear in mind re prices - GW aren't going to be competing with their own old prices with this, they're going to be competing against the ebay scalpers who do nothing except drive up the cost of OOP models without adding value. Even if all we get are plastic kits and a few Finecast characters that were on LCTB over the past year and GW charge a premium over the original price, that's still better than the alternative which is paying some greedy git multiple times the original sticker price.

If they go further and actually set up a proper back catalogue with a predictable way of ordering from it, this could be very cool. Again, not an ideal option, for instance I'd rather see them give us a proper range of SoB in plastic and bring back the WHF setting than let us buy the whole old SoB range in metal/FC and pick up a few plastic Brets, but I'll take what I can get.

My own personal wildly-optimistic longshot hope is that this includes the WHFB scenery kits, it'd be nice to pick up Witchfate Tor and Skullvane Manse for less than £100-150+ each.

I always thought that GW should have created a small subsidiary company that focuses on casting and selling old (OOP) metal miniatures on demand. As long as the molds are still okay, why not make money from them. If small companies like Foundry can somehow survive by (amongst other things) casting and selling old (pre-slotta) GW models and old Perry sculpted miniatures from 25 years ago, then a GW subsidiary selling old Warhammer miniatures should do fine for some years.

But then again, this is GW and even if they decided to offer some of the old metal miniatures again, they would probably do so following their current price strategy and no one in his right mind would buy any.
