Youtube Channel Recommendations
« on: June 01, 2018, 10:53:33 AM »
Here's a list of various stuff to watch & listen to while hobbying.

Let's recommend good channels, be it any topic! Music, 40k, history, natural sciences, whatever you think is particularly good. Some quick ones:

Timaeus, who runs a series on History of Rome.

History, particularly ancient Roman & Byzantine, by Thersites

History's Empire, containing a wealth of lectures and documentaries on all manner of historical subjects. Kenneth Harl's are particularly good (e.g. to recognize voice), though the lecturers aren't attributed. It seems the channel is all about scraping together as many history videos and audios from all around, and uploading them as fast as possible, and it seems some kind of dealings with owners of some videos has at least taken place. More importantly than credit given and legalities, however, is the concentration of good stuff to watch and listen to!

Anyone has got natural science channels to recommend?

As to 40k, this video on humanity in that grimdark setting by Luetin is good. His channel is a good source for 40k material to listen to.

Crash Course: This channel has a series on nearly everything.  From history to literature to biochemistry, they dive into each topic and give you a nice understanding of the topic.  Think of it like a quirky "Cosmos" series on everything.  My personal favorites are Crash Course History season 1 (starring John Green) and Crash Course Mythology.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX6b17PVsYBQ0ip5gyeme-Q

The Great War: This channel began exactly 100 years after the war began and through the years they have covered everything that has happened week by week with other episodes covering weapons and equipment, famous persons of the time, and even some Q/A.  If you're curious on what went on in the war check it out.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUcyEsEjhPEDf69RRVhRh4A

Baz Battles: A series that looks at different battles both ancient and some times mythical and lays out what happened on the battle field from a strategic point of view.  It can be a fun to watch and may even give you some ideas on the table top.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx-dJoP9hFCBloY9qodykvw

Extra Credits: A Channel that was a focus on the gaming industry has now blossomed and has video series on sci-fi, myth, and my favorite: history.  Here is their series on the sinking of the Bismark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CV1tvMYFRs&list=PLhyKYa0YJ_5CD6J9bBp-BsbHxYTSNpYZw

Bruva Alfabusa: Home to my favorite Warhammer what if series, this channel covers mostly WH40k stuff especially lore.  The staple of the channel is the "What if the Emperor had a Text to Speech Device" also known as TTS.  It follows the Emperor in modern times (before the 13th crusade when GW advanced the plot) after some tech priests found an old 20th century text to speech device and installed it in the golden throne.  Now the Emperor talks to his Custodes about the Imperium and to get caught up on what has happend in the last 10k years.  He starts to enact new decrees to try and fix the imperium and reunite ALL of his living sons, starting with Magnus the Red.  It takes an in depth look on the crazy lore of 40K and tried to apply logic to fixing the imperium.  Really its just an amazing comedy series complete with stripper custodes, an angry and self righteous Fyodor, a cynical Magnus the Red, and the Custode captain general trying to keep it all together.  Its like Arrested Development but with the Imperium. I can not recommend this highly enough if you like WH40k!

Primitive Technology is a fun one if your interested in survival stuff, building primitive but amazing things. There's not much sound in some of the videos. It's not so much explaining anything as demonstrating building it. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAL3JXZSzSm8AlZyD3nQdBA

For music, I'm a big fan of Dan Bull. Mostly geeky gaming raps and songs. He use to do a lot of internet protest songs, but hasn't recently. Likely due to youtube's algorithm killing things.
https://www.youtube.com/danbull/videos/

I usually check in on The King of Random every now and then and check for some good videos. Some decently length videos on a variety of things, usually focusing on cool affects or gadgets. https://www.youtube.com/user/01032010814/videos?view=0&flow=grid

Nighthawkinlight is also more of a building/science channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/Nighthawkinlight/videos

History wise I tend to jump around. I find I don't tend to watch many history videos because I prefer reading, or I'll put some podcasts on when I'm painting or working on stuff. My absolute favorite is AskHistorians. It's based on a subreddit of the same name that has incredibly high standards for answers. Everything is suppose to be sourced in each response, so that it's not just random people posting what they heard back in 8th grade from a cousin. There's a playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgMy8FV2sLlWQ1ApYngLRFyerHqz8DOxL

Seconding this. As the Netherlands was neutral in WW1 it usually gets completely glossed over in schools except: Neutral, Allies still blockaded us, which was really bad for trade and also caused starvation --> we needed more agricultural land so we reclaimed an entire new province from the sea.

It's really interesting and you can't help but be baffled by some of the things that went on. I mean, Haig gets a bad rep in the 'Lions led by donkeys' kinda way, but the guy has nothing on people like Konrad von Hötzendorf (Austria-Hungary) or Luigi Cadorna (Italy).

This one as well. Though I'm disappointed that after all these years the original narator is going to do something else. I'll need to get used to the new guys voice I guess.

A big like here as well, it's just sooo funny.

Talking about funny, if you're into Dark Souls I need to point towards ThePruld. I never knew I'd find crazy shouting in Italian (with lots of swearing) as amusing as this (luckily there are subtitles). Loda il sole puttana! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzJDimvPW1Y

I like CGP Grey for his insightful videos on all kinds of aspects of human society (mainly based on all kinds of good books he has read and references). If you want a good reality check about governments I recommend watching his Rules for Rulers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStL7niR7gs

I also follow several YouTubers that do Let's Plays. Of these I like the channel of quill18 the most, as he has a very similar taste in games as I do and so I often discover new strategi and tactical games through him: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbx1TZgxfIauUZyPuBzEwZg

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Lindybeige. An informative and entertaining channel on history (particularly of the military kind), with occasional forays into other nerdy subjects like wargaming and RPGing. By far the most watched channel by me.

Lindybeige is ok but I still watch his stuff occasioanlly.  But to add to the list check out Scholagladiatoria and Metatron too.  Personally I really enjoy scholagladiatoria out of the 3 but they do collabs with each other or re: each others content from time to time.

@BAWTRM
I didn't know EC was getting a new voice! That will be weird but may work out alright.

I also second GCP Grey.  I would HIGHLY recommend his video "Rule for Rulers."  Its very good and a great way to look at how governments and power work from a sociological point of view.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStL7niR7gs&t=

I watch many lets players.  Lately its been mostly Jesse Cox.  I can't remember the last time I watched Game Grumps but I'm still subscribed.
I'd recommend:
Markiplier's Alien: Isolation
Jesse Cox: God Of War (the new one), Life is Strange, Contradiction, The Infections Madness of Doctor Dekker,
Jesse also has his Scary Game Squad playthroughs on his Channel and I would recommend their playthrough of PT, Until Dawn, and Resident Evil 7
Farfromsublte's Phoenix Wright series, Mass Effect series, Amnesia, and pretty much anything as they cosplay the characters of the game they play while playing it and banter.
Game Grumps: Anything with Mario or Zelda is great. Their Animated videos are very well done too.

I'd also recommend an animated Vlogger named TheOdd1sout.  Very funny stories about when he was a kid with nice animations from his webcomics.  They're basically shower thoughts.

https://www.youtube.com/user/jastownsendandson Townsends. A fantastic and highly informative channel about XVIIth century colonial history.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChS9wazLlTUHSTeKVG39hZw Arch Warhammer. He might have slightly extreme views on some IRL stuff, but he's a 'Hammer loremaster through and through.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2IYWWifoIht9T47z1Z5lJw Dead Meat. I'm too much of a chicken to watch horror movies (usually), so this is a great way for me to enjoy them. Kill counts, commentaries, podcasts - you name it, they have it. The couple running this channel show real passion for their work, which is something that I always respect.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS5tt2z_DFvG7-39J3aE-bQ Life of Boris. Boris is a phenomenon. He has shown the world that slav life is not just vodka and ladas... well, mostly. His channel is a great source of information about former soviet states and he presents his work in a funny, engaging manner.

I used to watch Arch Warhammer but his tone is very snobbish and he became too political or dedicate videos on slandering/throwing mud at other youtubers, when all I wanted was warhammer videos. Way better than onemindsyndicate though. I hate how they pronounce warhammer names and words and they fumble their lines more often than I'm comfortable with.  I do like 40k Theories as some of the videos are quite thought provoking while being very informational on the lore and no where near as snobbish as Arch Warhammer.

On that note...I would recommend wowcrendor.  He does mainly world of warcraft stuff, but his blood bowl videos are fun.  He has organised some tournaments with other lets play youtubers.  I am sad that his Blood Bowl 2 league fell through.  It was a fun experience to watch but all the participants got busy halfway through the season and it just tapered off. His blood bowl lizardmen team was fun and you really root for his skinks.
Here is him playing Blood Bowl 2 with TotalBiscuit (R.I.P.)

For table top gaming content I follow Guerilla Miniature Games.  Ash Barker used to work for GW and he's just a really nice dude.  His channel is a lot of fun (especially his Throw Back Thursdays).

For strategy computer games I watch Horath Drak and Enter Elysium mainly.  I prefer Horath Drak the most, EE can get a bit whiny at times.  Sometimes I watch Christopher Odd, Quill18 or Katherine of Sky when my que is low.

If anyone is into FIFA youtubers I follow Spencer FC, Chesnoid Gaming and Cutzy.  Spencer has almost transcended FIFA the game and doing a lot of real life soccer stuff.  Ches tries to do a lot of realistic gameplay.  Cutzy's a bit more niche but his stuff is really funny and highly entertaining.

Jamie Stangroom's channel on youtube is great for Star Wars.  He's done a lot of interviews with Star Wars actors.  How his channel isn't bigger I'll never know.

Me and Wissenlander had babies!

not together.

finding photographic evidense that Wiss smiles is going to be hard...

I used to watch his channel until he made a piece about WW2 weapons, and through a lack of actual knowledge (and not stuff like 'katana's can cut through anything' kinda fanboy drivel) made statements about German weapons that were just wrong. And when pointed out by some of his well informed followers (in a respectful way) basically reacted with a pissy "you're just nazi fanboys, so you're wrong and I'm right" video.

Unsubscribed right then and there. I don't mind people being wrong, but doubling down on your incomplete knowledge and insulting the other party as a reaction gets zero sympathy from me.

@BAWTRM
I didn't know EC was getting a new voice! That will be weird but may work out alright.

Not liking it too much atm to be honest. I've watched 2 of the new video's (Dan prime still has a few going atm too but those are the absolute last) and I'm not the only one. The new guy just seems so hyper, hardly pausing for a breath or anything, it just makes his video's seem rushed. Other have described him as 'sounding like a used car salesman' and I kinda agree. I hope it's just nerves and he truly starts working on his delivery otherwise I can see a lot of people leaving, quality content needs quility delivery.

Yeah, if onemindsyndicate would use better pronunciation I'd probably start watching it, but as is it's just too jarring.

And to add another YouTuber I sometimes watch: The Mighty Jingles. I just love how he brings stuff. I hardly play any of the games he features but just the way he brings things is entertaining to me. Great voice really, some voices are great for simply listening to, I think I could bear hearing him talk about Barbie dolls and I would still be fine with it!  :icon_mrgreen:

Can't forget mentioning The Tank Museum btw. It's the channel of the Bovington Tank Museum and they've got these lovely Tank Chats about all kinds of (mostly WW2) tanks. And also their Mathilda Diaries, where they take the viewers through the entire process of restoring a tank to actual working condition (well, the driving bit, I'm sure the weaponry is kept non-functional). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChl-XKVVBAzoEVsnbOfpcqw

I just started watching some of their stuff.  I finally understand what the Brotherhood of Nod actually is.

To add to the scifi and fantasy analysis; check out IdeasOdIceAndFire.  They do quite a nice job with many different universes. I am quite liking their videos on the Dune universe.

Do you mean his comparison between the Bren and the Spandau? I did watch that one and his response, and I didn't get the impression you got. That might just be my slight autism though.

I would say Lindybeige has a tendency to theorize quite a lot by his own initiative, but I think he adequately says so when he does it, rather than presents his pet theories as if they were academic consensus.

That was indeed the one. I don't even know if all the original comments still exist but I don't feel the need to look back. I've got limited viewing time and there are enough other worthy channels out there that deserve the views.

The Great War channel posted an interesting video recently about the Maginot Line which dispels some widely believed myths about the infamous french defense as well as show how it was designed and operated.

I am big into MarioMaker.
The three channels I watch consistently are CarlSagan42, CeaveGaming DashieGames.
Very entertaining but for different reasons. Carl is smart, really good at MarioMaker, and has people recommending thd best levels. Talks science too. Ceave is funny, and really into analysing the technical stage building tricks and how to implement them well. Dashie on the other hand is good at playforming, has plays fan made levels, and is pretty hilarious. Cant wait for MarioMaker2 - one more month!!

On occasion I will watch Age of Empire 2 videos, generally uploaded by T90 Official or Spirit of the Law. T90 streams the best games from voobly, not just competitive, but I like the FFA diplomacy games with random game settings attached too. Spirit of the Law is technical analysis and the like.

Ryan George’s series of Pitch Meetings on ScreenRant are hilarious. And everyone knows and loves Honest Trailers and HISHE.

Lastly, an awesome channel I have to recommend to TierZoo. Great biology lesson while talking in gamer language. E.g. extinction of the dinosaurs was a dev patch to rebalance the meta. Great channel.

Also I recommend Dixie cryptids. Such lovely storytelling with Bigfoot!
And if you like naval history you cannot go wrong Drachnifelts.

If you want some really good and serious military history of WWII you MUST start following KIT. He teaches how you really use sources, why german generals war memorials are full of baises, self-promotion and so on.
And you learn to spot not just the Russophiles but also the insidious Wheraboo
