GP's EoW Fluff ...
« on: February 22, 2013, 04:23:22 AM »
Here is the backround on my character for this campaign ...

Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt, "The Runt" is the youngest of 5 brothers and 2 sisters, Karl being the runt of the litter, being at a height of only 5’ 6”.  Obviously such a small size for a warrior isn't particularly imposing, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for in swordsmanship, horse riding, and bravery.  His mother was passing over the River Reik via the ferry located at Weidmarkt, when she found herself giving birth to Karl a month earlier than expected, and he has since taken that location as his surname.

After his grandfather died, Karl’s father took over the family lending business, and Karl’s brothers all found their way into the family financial empire, while both his sisters haven’t been married off yet.  However, Karl, being the black sheep that he is, turned to the family's military arm to find his own adventure.  Since then he was shown by his uncle the trade of the blade and the shield, used to protect the transportation of the family's wealth to those who borrow from them.

The Shultz family has currently aligned itself with Ludwig von Rusdorf, and although this includes some financial resources being made available, the family’s military units are the main contribution to Von Rusdorf’s attempt at Middenland’s throne of rulership.  The rest of the family isn't bothered by this.  They feel that it can always be claimed that "The Runt" has once again demonstrated his rebellious tendencies, should Von Rusdorf's attempt fail, and then the rest of the family can move on as usual either way, having enough money to replace any losses to the army that might be incurred.

Commander Von Weidmarkt tends towards leadership with a bit of daring, and he is not unwilling to take a risk, if judged to be worth the gain.  In battle, he wears black armor with gold trim, while riding a black stallion, and preferring the use of a sword, instead of a hammer or a lance.  The Shultz family army maintains a strong unit of expertly trained swordsmen, and equips its main missile troops with handguns of only the most modern quality.  These have been known to be supplemented with mercenaries from as far away as Averland, and even Tilea.  The Shultz family colors are blue and orange with white trim, while the Shultz family banner also includes three yellow coins, representing the virtues of ambition, energy, and industry, together forming wealth.

Turn Two Fluff Report ...

The “Campaign” for Votes Begins

Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt sat atop his armored black stallion, as one of winter's first "smell of snow in the air" breezes blew against his face.  Under his black armor with golden trim, Von Weidmarkt wore not only the typical padded jerkin, but also a warm woolen dark blue sweater made for him by his current lady friend.  However, he’d seen more than his fair share of cruelly cold winters, and he knew even the extra layer might not be enough to protect him from the sharpness of winter’s eventual icy bite.

Upon entering the first town where looking for a vote would be attempted, things seemed to go well.  The local leader had welcomed them into his town, and after a long and boring speech, a more personal conversation was had, from which developed an appropriate understanding. A light snow had begun to fall, and a courier had brought word from Lord Ludwig von Rusdorf regarding promises that could be kept, loans that could be lent, and warning of a possible enemy approaching from a different direction.

Commander Von Weidmarkt concluded his conversation with the town’s main noble, and redirected his horse back towards his army’s encampment.  Perhaps it was not too late to get them going to where they needed to arrive.  Then again, even if only ending up being the reserve for a main battle, such was better than being off on one’s own, while then being too difficult to obtain success by one's self, and better instead to remain close to the rest for a possible counter attack or needed defense.

In the meantime, a tally was being kept of those willing to support Lord Von Rusdorf.  So far at least three votes were likely, but now they must find more before mid-winter was upon everyone.  It was time to move the troops again, spread the word, and acquire additional support.

Commander Von Weidmarkt's horse was now moving in the opposite direction that it had previously been facing when conducting the negotiations that had occured, his positive attitude having been displayed, his belief in his soldiers and peers strong, and his self-confidence evident as he urged the black stallion forward, leading his knightly guard towards potential enemies, while the snow began to pick up in its steadiness falling from the sky.

Turn Three Fluff Report …...

Snow, Snow, And More Snow

The snow had continued to fall over the course of the week.  One storm followed by a day off, and then another storm followed by another day off, before the real biggie hit crossing over a full two days.

The Blizzard of 2217 had really smacked the landscape.  Winds were high on its back side causing snowdrifts in all sorts of places.  And then well below freezing temperatures swept in next, making things hard on anyone who wasn't close to a fire to stay warm.

Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt had suggested that scouts be sent out to reconnoiter the next moves of Ludwig von Rusdorf’s forces, but success of these wasn’t going to happen.  The mounted crossbowmen had a natural difficulty in getting their horses to move very far, and they all had to turn back when progress was slow, the coldest temperatures of the year following up the blizzard conditions of the day before making all kinds of activity difficult at best.  And when a request was made for the huntsmen to give things a try, there were no snowshoes to be found for traipsing on top of the multiple feet of accumulation that had occurred over the last week of snow storms.

With the weather obviously not interested in co-operating with much of any army operations, Von Weidmarkt set about having his men make the best of the current situation, and moving to support some of the other forces assembling together for an eventual push into the rest of Middenland, should the weather clear of course for such a campaign to continue, and then the effort might proceed to garner more votes.

Turn 4 Fluff Report …

Advancing Towards Votes

Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt sat high in his saddle upon his black steed as his soldiers had begun the march towards their next destination.  Although the Blizzard of 2217 was now a thing of the past, the cold temperatures hadn’t ceased, and so the snows hadn’t melted much.  The winds that had swooped in behind the big blizzard were now long past, but the solid block of winter’s air wasn’t ideal for the troops that had amassed for the advancement of Ludwig von Rusdorf’s interests, and had begun taking their next step on the journey in front of them.

Last week, Titus Augustus’ forces had attempted to take Elgadsen, but they’d been repulsed.  Von Rusdorf’s nephew had in the past helped his uncle accomplish past military goals, but now even two dispatches carrying words of peace and forgiveness by the homing pigeons with warm woolen caps to keep their heads warm, and that Von Rusdorf’s engineers had bred over the years for winter flight, had gone unanswered.  Family infighting and less than courteous communication by the lack of a reply was more than Titus’ uncle appreciated this time, and even the Von Altenberg’s who had refused an alliance, although then were looking for an exchange of for military help anyway, had at least responded to communications.

After the fight in Elgadsen, Titus’ troops had beat a retreat back towards Shoppendorf.  Commander Von Weidmarkt's men, along with Kapitan Werner Fremp's mercenaries, and the new recruits led out of the forests of Middenland by the famous Paddy North, who brought with him the Hirsch family contingent of huntsmen, free company hordes, and irregular light cavalry to join the Von Rusdorf campaign for votes, were now in full pursuit.  Even Denfather Olric Spalac was following up with his chapter of the Knights of the White Wolf and their Sons of Ulric infantry.

Commander Von Weidmarkt continued to survey the march of his men towards where they thought the enemy might be.  They had been streaming past in relatively good spirits considering the cold weather that had blanketed the landscape, perhaps with a bit of confidence left over from having participated in the armies’ recent victory at Elgadsen.  The question would be, was there enough force to drive home the gains that had been attained, and acquire more votes?

Von Weidmarkt looked back over his shoulder.  The tail end of his army wasn’t far behind, and he could see the engineers bringing up the rear with some artillery, and siege cannons as well, while a wagon also made its way forward that housed the rest of the homing pigeons.  Von Weidmarkt’s recent flock of outward messages had mostly returned, although some were still outstanding.

The Commander returned his head forward, and gently urged his horse ahead once again to reach the front of his column of soldiers again.  Time would tell how they’d fair at Shoppendorf.

Turn 5 Fluff report ...

Pondering Upon A Horse With A View

Shoppendorf hadn’t been a success.  The assault had been tough, and soldiers had died.  Titus and Von Rusdorf’s forces had now exchanged blows on two occasions, and it hadn’t been pretty.  War never was.

The armies of Ludwig Von Rusdorf had retreated.  Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt had grumbled on their way back to Elgadsen, yet he’d tried not to show it to his men.  It had been a cold counter march, but once back inside the town, new fires were lit, wounded were tended, and the soldiers rested for their next assignment.

Yet this time it took a while to arrive.  The winterized pigeons seemed to be working overtime.  Most had gone, and most had returned, some bearing words of friendship, others bearing replies that were confusing at best.  Yet the pens where the birds were kept in a woolen covered wagon hadn’t filled up again, and Commander Von Weidmarkt wondered if they ever would this winter.

The diplomatic dispatches had been frequent.  Back and forth, back and forth.  A candidate had arisen that might take the day, and yet who really knew for sure.  A new alliance had formed, but would it be enough?

There had been one day where a rider had gotten through, the temperatures had seemed be warmer than usual on that day, and good news had arrived.  Von Weidmarkt wondered if this could continue, and could the blood feud come to an end?  Perhaps, but who knew for sure.

If it did, then perhaps there was hope again.  And hopefully it wouldn't disappear faster than a wraith in a cold winter wind.  One never really knew until after time had passed and the future had been written in the books of the past.

Von Weidmarkt now sat upon his horse at the lead of his troops, Von Rusdorf banners, household banners, and those of his friends all whipping a bit in the wind, as the valley below the ridge, where they’d taken up position to observe, was under their horses feet, and below the snow of course.

Would Von Urenbach’s troops really be there attempting to hold off Titus’ men?  And if so, would Titus have enough to do the job?  Wouldn’t it make more sense for the peace to be achieved even between those two, for all Middenland stood to gain, if such peace could be achieved.

Von Weidmarkt watched for the right moment, if it would even arrive, like the pigeons and the riders had been doing over the last week, poised upon the precipice of sending forth a peace emissary or not.  Perhaps the future of Middenland wasn’t as dire as the winter had been so far, with all the deaths that had already occurred.

Maybe the war of cold would end with the election, yet even then, another one would eventually arrive, like the ever return of winter each year.

Well... No we aren't there. And for peace you could try talking to us about it.

This is only intended as a fluff thread.

Perhaps the comment is good for the General Discussion area or maybe even some additional fluff.  :icon_cool:

Turn 6 fluff report ...

Parting to Destiny

Commander Karl Shultz von Weidmarkt had just said goodbye to Paddy North and the senior ranking member of the Hersh family huntsmen.  The muscular backwoodsman towered over he who was called “The Runt” by those who weren’t particularly fond of short fellows such as Von Weidmarkt, and the Commander of the Shultz family military units stared off at the two after they’d all parted, not knowing if they’d see each other again, or if they did, how long before it would be.

There had been many partings recently.  There was the meeting of the two Lord’s, and their supporters who were present.  The loss of a relationship with the supporters of another, and the harsh words received when a conciliatory tone had been initiated by himself.  And of course there’d been the sending of one of the smaller pigeons, a favorite of Von Weidmarkt’s, who had not yet returned, when so many others had in the last week.  Von Weidmarkt wondered if he should send another.  He would need to if his ideas were to come to fruition, when so many others had not.

“Weidmarkt.”

The commander’s brain was shaken from its wandering, Paddy North and the Hersch family elder snapping back into focus again, yet further away, and having now reached the rearward side of their soldiers and baggage train.

“Weidmarkt.”

It had been a low, calm voice interrupting his thoughts, and the commander turned his head when he recognized the voice.

“Weidmarkt, it’s time to go.  Olric, Von Rusdorf, and even your men and mine, they’ve all moved out as well, and we need to catch back up.”

The commander smiled slightly, Werner had always continued to be there, stalwart, consistently coming through on his commitment, a truly valuable mercenary even if he was more quiet than others.  But now when it probably made sense he had spoken.

“Yes, quite right you are Werner, it is time to go.”

Von Weidmarkt looked one more time to the north.  He hoped it would all work out well, and if not, that Paddy North’s back up plan would be enough then.  In the meantime, his own leadership was needed in another direction.

Von Weidmarkt turned his horse, Werner having already turned his, and was galloping away.  The spurs were touched lightly against the flanks of the black stallion, and it moved off towards their next destiny, whatever it might be.
