He's back!  :icon_biggrin:

I'm also eagerly awaiting the next update but can imagine the MASSIVE stone wall behind the complex will take quite some time...

One of the things that is taking so long is that every time I begin working on a component of the project I start thinking, "Oh, that might look pretty cool if I did this." Sometimes a fit of creativity hits after I have already begun a certain operation and it requires a "do over". Right now my attention is focused on the front steps, the loading dock off to the side, and the incorporation of runes and other ideas. I will post soon. Spent quite a bit of time carving today.

Oh, thanks for the rune of "Fear".

This is just a simply STUNNING piece of terrain.  I will need to send my WAAAGH forth to liberate my poor brothers that are slaving away on the construction of this!  I am totally impressed by your woodworking talents.  I remember another one of your pieces from either Terra-genesis or from here....Memory is foggy due to the Marienburg Campaign.

Hey all,

Well, here is an update finally. I have not been able to get quite as much done as I wanted to before this post, but I was detecting a little impatience.

Here is the front gate again. This time it is primed. As I was hoping, the bones in the iron plates are not as visually jarring when they are not contrasting colors.

The following series is a carving progression for the small masks around the upper edge of the loading dock. When carving something this small it is easier to do them in batches and as part of a larger piece that can be cut out later. I needed thirteen. It is best to always do a few extra just in case there are any misshaps.

Lay out the basic shape.

Reference lines to guide subsequent cuts.

The eyes.

Defining the lower part of the mask.

Defining the upper helm.

The nose guard cut in.

Stop cuts made at the edges of the beard.

Beard area cut away relieving the mask from the background.

Brow line cut back.

Beard defined.

Mouth cut in.

Individual faces cut out.

Cut to finish size.

Sixteen faces. Three more than I need.

Five new large faces for the exterior of the complex.

I needed a total of 15 faces for the project. The one primed in black was the prototype. It was a challenge to come up with 15 different faces, but I did not want any repetition.

A large face and a small face in reference to a dime.

As stated in a previous post, I have been doing a lot of carving on the walls. This is the right side outer wall. I am working on the crenellations here.

A larger view showing the two arrow slits between the corbel recesses.

The next four photos show the loading dock that will abut the right exterior wall.

One of the ideas I had was to incorporate runes into the architecture since this is a common Dwarf characteristic. I would think that Chaos Dwarves would do the same. I asked Teb to design a style for the runes and I have used them at the entrance to the front gate and on the loading dock. This is the rune for “Dismay”. It will be used at the entrance to the front gate. The four pieces were cut from sheet styrene.

Because the plain flat surfaces would be visually boring I have added some texture.

Holding onto the individual pieces of the rune while adding some texture proved to be somewhat difficult so I decided to add the texture before I cut the elements of the rune out. This is the rune for “Fear” in progress.

The finished rune of fear. It will also be incorporated into the front steps leading up to the gate.

I also decided to incorporate runes in the top of the loading dock. From left to right they are: “Stone”, “Fire”, and “Iron”. The concept here is that as ore is hauled out of the mountain it passes over the loading dock into the furnaces and is turned into iron. (I hope that’s not too hokey.)

Here the three runes are cut out and textured.

Recesses were cut into the loading dock so that the runes can appear to be laid into the stone. The next two photos show the finished product.

Teb, you need to decide something here. These runes can be represented as iron plates set into the rock, or as obsidian. The fluff says that the plain that the Chaos Dwarves located to was littered with obsidian. If they are iron plates they can be painted up to be well rusted. If they are obsidian they can possibly be painted up a glossy black in a way that will convey the idea of a scratched up glass surface.

The remaining photos show the how the complex is progressing.

The way the piece is being designed there is going to be quite a bit of landmass to the right before the walls. This will be one of the major focal points of the piece. This is why I spent so much time on the loading dock. I have some imaginative plans for this area before the walls.

This photo shows the steps leading up to the main gate. The runes have not been inlaid yet. However, you can see the idea I am trying to communicate. Thousands of slaves have been forced up the steps and into the mining complex over its long history. As these unfortunate souls pass into forced labor and eventual death, they first must pass over the rune of “Fear”, and then pass over the rune of “Dismay” before entering the nightmare of the Chaos Dwarves. (Or something like that.)

Well, I hope you enjoyed this latest update. Rest assured I am working away diligently. Back to the mines!

Marcus

HOLY SH......just.......wow!

I've just been staring at these new pictures for like an hour thinking of anything appropriate to say.
It's just getting better and better.

Adding runes to a building is one thing...but incorporating them in such a way that they actually add to the symbolic meaning and feel of the building instead of just decoration is taking it that step further.
Just brilliant.

I agree that it would add extra mystic flavor if the inlaid runes are obsidian. But if they are to become shiny black obsidian it would be best if the stone is quite a bit lighter for contrast.
Did we already discuss the color(s) of the stone part of the building?

I made the design with defense in mind, hence the double stairs in front of the main gate. Not very practical for everyday traffic but it becomes much more difficult to assault the main gate with large numbers.
Same idea with the loading dock, with the crane system and not much room in front of that small door it won't be a weak point when defended.
It was initially meant to be just big enough for carts of ore, barrels(of ale) and things like crates
Now looking at that huuuge building that small door for supplies looks very small....maybe a bit too small.
Especially with all that gorgeous detail you've given the loading dock.
But I'm probably just nitpicking here... :icon_redface:

And can I just say again...WOW!  :icon_biggrin:

You do it once again! Those runes are amazing. That beaten metal look, and incorporated into the rock surface like that. Its even better then how i visualised it when we where discussing those runes earlier on. Keep up the great work. I can hardly wait to see the finished product!

Holy Sigmar!
This is a-maz-ing.

I can't believe what I am seeing.
This is so... words cannot describe it. To play a siege with this masterpiece has to be one of the greatest things a tabletop player can ever experience (I am only talking about tabletop and nothing else before some buffoon has some lewd ideas).

A truly great piece of scenery makes you instantly want to play a game of warhammer.

After looking at these pictures i looked at my desk and i had deployed two units of Outriders and a Volley Gun without realising.

What a master piece. And its not even painted. If your painting skills are 1/4 as good as your modelling skills we are in for a treat.

This is just a masterpiece... the different carved faces just scream with personality.  I can't help but feel that this terrain prize is ridiculously generous considering that all Teb had to do to win it was convert and paint a single mini.  It's like having Da Vinci give you the Mona Lisa for winning a sketch contest.

This project oozes love and dedication out of every pore.  The idea to have fresh slaves walk over the fear and dismay runes... brilliant!  And the inlaying too.  The carved faces, the Stone, Fire, & Iron runes (not hokey), even the layout is beautiful and well thought out.  It would break my heart to part with something I'd worked on this long.

And never once have I heard a peep out of Marcus Lietdorf complaining about what he's gotten himself into. Although I'm guessing that if he does decide to donate another terrain project, it will be considerably more modest in scope... brilliant idea, no way in hell WD would let this beut' pass up.

it would make a rather funny article aswell, as its a reward for painting a single miniature

Hey all,

First off, I want to thank you all for the words of praise and encouragement. They keep me motivated!

In regards to some of Pistol Pete's comments: Yes, there is no doubt that it is ridiculously over the top as a prize for converting a single mini. :icon_biggrin: However, when Teb and I started talking about the project I invited him to think big. His excellent illustrations have inspired me tremendously.

In all honesty, I am just showing off outrageously. :icon_mrgreen: I would seriously downplay the generosity aspect. As a craftsman (I am a furniture maker/instructor) I thrive on being able to share my projects with those who can appreciate them. After all, isn't that really the purpose of this section of the forum. We all like the opportunity to share our little pieces of art with those who really appreciate them.

I am really enjoying the creative challenges of this project. I am enjoying making it. And I am enjoying sharing it with all of you! This piece is definitely cool to look at, and I will enjoy that for awhile, but I have absolutely no desire to keep it. I want to get back to work on the Empire outpost I started some time back. :icon_rolleyes:

The bottom line, though, is this: I said I would do something. In the comfortably relative anonymity of cyberspace it would be easy to simply turn off the computer and walk away. Who would know? I would. Generous? Perhaps, but probably more self-serving. Besides, I enjoy the site way too much! :icon_biggrin:

Now for Teb,

Your concern about the size of the loading dock door is warranted. Here are a couple of more pictures with a dwarf and the cart from the Skull Pass set for scale:

The door can certainly be made wider and it can be increased in height by at least one course of blocks. Regarding the doors to the complex and the mine, other than the front gate, should they be iron, or wood, or some of one and some of the other? There are two into the mountain, two into the towers, one at the loading dock, and one down into the complex in the courtyard. Let me know.

I think obsidian for the runes is the way to go. As for the color of the complex, some time ago I had suggested dark reds such as you find in the American Southwest. For example:

While such a color scheme would allow the obsidian to contrast nicely, I am somewhat concerned that all the rusted iron in the project would just blend in too much. It depends on just how rusted the iron elements will be. A very dark blue gray could work. I think I could moderate the color around the runes to allow them to stand out. A neutral sandstone color (similar to the color it is now) could work well, but I don't really think it would fit the whole Chaos Dwarf theme all that well. It is your call.

Wow, as good as it gets, this is awesome work..........granite wall colour would look nice, as I'm sure dwarfs wouldn't work in anything less :biggriin: you could get some greys purples etc in there too. I have just some granite outside that I've made a wall in my garden with...so if you need pics just say :smile2:

Yes,
I totally agree that this project is mindboggling WAY over the top as a prize for a conversion/painting contest. It might have started out as such but has grown into this amazing project.
I do remember that the initial dimensions for the design could be something like 12" by 12"  :biggriin:
But I like to think that the original idea with so much creative freedom and the sketches had some influence in getting Marcus excited about the project.

Of course the real reason is that I'm subtly manipulating Marcus in making the most outrageously gorgeous terrain piece for FREE! WHAHAHAHAHAHA...HA! :icon_twisted:

ahem...

But about that door.
Seeing a miniature in front of the door does make me realize the door is not as small as I thought...
still can't really get used to the huge size :icon_lol:
Making it somewhat bigger would still be best I think. Something like this:

About the color of the stone, a warm red/brown stone color would look great but I agree the rusted Iron would probably blend in too much...

A granite stone look would indeed be the best neutral color to work with, giving a very hard, unforgiving feel without getting too dark so the obsidian and iron would give a good contrast. The metal could of course also be  brass for more warmth and contrast.
something like this:

Some reference photos of actual granite would be great if thats possible Krom1415

What would be awesome is if the surrounding stones and stone wall would be another color like the warm red/brown color you originally had in mind. Giving excellent contrast and insinuating the stones for the outpost were brought there from another area to get the best quality material.

I'm just getting more and more excited about this project! :biggriin:
