Compatibility between 6th-7th edition sculpts
« on: November 26, 2013, 07:10:33 AM »
Will the head of the halberd (the actual blade part) fit onto a 6th edition Spear?

I've recently come across a large stash of 6th edition Spearmen. I absolutely adore the 6th edition sculpts, but I don't care for Spearmen. Would it be difficult or a waste of time to remove the spear tip and replace it with a halberd blade? Or is the blade on the 7th edition sculpts too big?

It seems like a really stupid question, but hey, I don't have any 6th edition Spearmen to compare. I've got some Swordsmen, but a lot of good that will do me.

Also, how hard is it to disassemble a plastic model that was glued together ages ago? If it isn't too hard, I might combine the pieces of the 6th edition troops with Greatsword bits to make my "elite" Halberdier unit.

Thanks in advance!

Are these the starter set 6th Spearmen?

I've a whole bunch of those that I changed over to halberdiers. Just snipped off the spear tip, filed flat and then added a snipped halberd blade. I've used current halberd blades, the older 6th Soldiers of the Empire halberd blades and even tried the one from the Free Company set. All fit really well with a nice flat surface and a dot of plastic cement.

Hope you don't mind me putting this wip-piccy here as proof.

That's absolutely fantastic, Rowly.

Thank you, and especially for the WIP pics. They're looking good.

Oh, follow up question (and shameless bump):

How do they rank up? Any problems?

I've done the same thing myself....they rank up just fine, though I don't have any of the latest version of halberds, but i figure the old spear models will fill out the back ranks as I have done here:

My Armies:
Empire
Ogres

To echo George, I've absolutely no issues with ranking as yet - but all my state troops are 6th Ed Starter edition guys :)

Saying that, when stood in Horde with my Grand Theogonist (old metal from the war alter) and BSB captain (old foot reiksguard standard bearer) they all fit together fine as well. I am led to believe that the latest edition State Troops are bigger than their predecessors so I'm not sure how well they'd mix.

Thanks to both of you.

I do believe that a vast majority of my newly acquired models (40, to be precise) are from the Starter set. It is so nice to hear that I won't be having problems with them. Well, hopefully! Thank you again!

Just to echo what's already been said: attaching the new halberd blades to the old 6th Ed starter models works really well.

I found that the shafts of the old spears and new halberds was about the same, so rather than chop the spear-tips off and file the ends flat I cut the spear-tips off and then cut a notch out of the end of the shaft. This meant you could leave the tab on the bottom of the blade, which I thought helped with giving more surface area to glue and helped to line everything up straight.

You can just about see the join on the third model from the left in the front rank of this pic (with the brown beard):

Because everything's plastic, you can easily scrape the join smooth (I couldn't find a picture of my models in which you could see the line).

Hope this helps!

That's a lovely looking unit. Reiklanders with blue accents or Middenlanders?

And how did you achieve that wonderful cream color? Or is that your camera?

Thank you -- they're part of my Reikland army:

Well, I did have to do some image processing as the light was really poor when I took the photo, but I think it's a fair representation of the colour  :-)

It's a White base coat, diluted Brown ink wash and then Bleached Bone over the top...nothing too fancy, but it's quite quick and looks OK when the unit's ranked up. This recipe was originally Warhammerlord_soth's from this very forum, btw.
