Empire War Wagon [140 pts]
Game 1: v high elves. This was only my opponents second game so we spent a fair bit going over rules, tactics etc. We both planted our objectives on the edge of his deployment zone: after all I was going to be nowhere near my own by turn two! He had a large number of archers, 4 bolt thrower, seaguard, and two companies of sword masters. The classic tyrion and teclis commanded! His first couple of turns of shooting were devastating, wiping out my 32 light cavalry, Karl, and a good few knights. But the warwagons hit the sword masters, the remaining knights hit his seaguard and archers and it was all over bar the mopping up! Tyrion was decapitated by a mancatcher, and teclis was crushed by impact hits! A splendid victory!
Game 2 v greenskins.
He brought a black orc on wyvern, 27 spiders, 20 black orcs , troll hag and 4 common trolls and shaman. The wyvern got stuck straight in scattering my pistoliers, and then spent most of the game fighting a war wagon. The wagon had it on the ropes but a flurry of terrible rolls turned the tide in the orcs favour. In the centre, the other war wagon and the white wolves and knights Panther slew the hag, but failed to capitalise on their success by carrying on into the spiders behind. Another spate of terrible rolls left these and my Outriders almost spent. Luckily Karl intervened to save the day, killing the orc wizard then the spiders...before leaving the battlefield pursued by the wyvern. Ludwig, the knights of the blazing sun, and the rest of the pistoliers spent the day fighting the black orcs, but the huge numbers of dice I rolled failed to make a dent in the orcs numbers, and the knights kept falling as I failed ever save. The combat pushed back and forth until I simply ran out of figures. In the last turn or two of mopping I clawed back a few points, finally finishing off the wyvern and, trying to chase down the last few orcs, my opponents offensive capacity eroded, but at the end I was a handful of points short of a draw!
The narrowest of defeats!
Game 3 was high elves again.
Lots of those silly lion people, with big axes and bows for some reason? 1 chariot with korhil, 4 squads of axe and bow skirmishy types, massive unit of white lions with a wizard lord, bsb on griffon, and assorted big cats and eagles.
I ignored the massive unit of white lions. Being ethereal for most of the game I couldn't do much to them. My pistoliers laminated themselves to the front of the chariot, and the few that survived harassed the skirmishing infantry as best they could while my knights tried to deal with the chariot and griffon. Most of the menagerie were easy pickings and eventually the warwagons started to corner the annoying skirmishers and finish a few off. Karl Franz fluffed his attacks against the elven griffon and got a thumping for his trouble, but my opponent was having as much trouble finishing off units of worth as I was! Hence we finished the game with only a couple of hundred vps each, and only a couple in it! A draw!
So 1 of each result seems fair, though I could have hoped for better rolls against the orcs. Obviously I struggled against big stuff and magical stuff but that's the nature of going low-fantasy in a tourney I suppose! The only consistently good performers were the warwagons, though only because of their impact hits and stomps...apart from a lucky shot with the mancatcher the rest of their shooting and melee attacks were dreadful! Now...I just need a way to give the rest of my army impact hits and everything will be hunky dory.
I nearly took an all Infantry army. 195 figures . I wonder how that would have turned out?
