Ostland army under siege: update 181229 Ar-ulrik
« on: August 07, 2018, 02:42:02 PM »
Long time no see.

Hope all of you are doing good, I was cleaning out my storage and came across bits and pieces of warhammer. I sold my last one with a lot of nice oop minis.  :icon_sad:

When I saw the old minis I feel the urge to paint so I painted a unit of handgunners. And of course they are ostlanders!

Ooooh nice. You've used snow on their bases! It looks cool and I rarely see snow on Empire minis, except for the Middenlanders. Great job.

Thank you guys.

I'm trying to do the units a bit more dynamic but still playable(ish).

Thank you, I like the thought of hardened northerners from ostland.

A new army, update with a little vip
« Reply #10 on: August 16, 2018, 09:24:46 PM »
So I took some poorly painted spearmen I bought a long time ago from eBay and started to make them into ostlanders. For this weekend my plans are to finish these spearmen and one special canon +crew

VIP

See you later this week :closed-eyes:

Excellent choice of miniatures! Is the Ogre going to join the spearmen ranks? Will we see an Ogre spearman conversion? :)

Still thinking about it :) it's either that or in a unit of greatswords with a lot of oop miniatures. Like the mordheim ostlanders. Think it could be cool.

Need your help to decide about the shields for my unit. Round or squarish? I think the round might be to big?

I like the round ones, yes they are big but that's the idea. You don't need a lot of space or mobility to fight with a spear in a block. The riveted rim does make it look rather heavy and primitive, maybe?

Really hard to say which shield would be more fitting or better looking. The red/white/black colour scheme is strong in itself, and both shields have grandeur and clarity. The question that pops to my mind is if you're going to paint each shield in exactly the same way, or if you plan to vary the b/w division under the red bull. Like quartered fields, lines and/or crosses.

I battled with the shield problem for years (!), all the while playing my spearmen without shields at all. I have now ordered a variety of squearish pavise shields from Perry and Fireforge, and will use these to equip my spearmen. So my personal answer was 'Neither', and I went for a third solution.  :icon_cool:

This is a very important decision! Don't rush it. :D

Good job. I like the guy who's leaning back against the barricade
As for the shields; i'd go with the round one

Thanks for input guys. Hard to decide which way to go. I like both put think the round look a bit primitive maybe as pointed out.. :biggriin:

So i left the regiment of spearmen for a bit and painted a little canon and crew. Hope you enjoy it. Sorry for bad pictures.

Knock knock who's there? A big as canon

So during my time starting this army I have gone for a more dramatic look. And the topic is something like the last stand. I'm thinking these guys are the only ostlanders left in a besieged town. That way I can mix in a bit of fun miniatures as well, like mordheim once.

Looks good, and I like the dramatic composition. It tells a story!  :eusa_clap:

The gun carriage is very ad hoc. They probably need to rearrange the gun firing position after each shot.

The defended wall is a great, unifying idea with your Handgunners and Artillery. Do you plan to do more units with this?

Thank you Zygmund! I'm looking for bitz for the canon still. I need the metal things that goes over each side of the canon (name in English?).

Yes that the idea, I found the walls and the unpainted minis so I got the idea. For the canon I built the rest of the barricade on top of the wall. The wall looked like the one for the hangunners first, so a little bit of conversion.

I can show you an idea that still is just that, an early idea for the greatswordunit.

So the idea is to have the greatswords, and some really cool rare minis like the ostlanders from mordheim, bursting out of this ruin they defended for so long.

Great stuff - love the greatswords idea.

On the subject of the shields, the square top on does tie in with the shape of the bulls head, - I mean in a sense of triangle shape with the 'point/chin' at the bottom so there is a certain symmetry.

I love the defended obstacle theme that you're putting together here. I've done a bit of work including scenery as unit fillers (mostly to help difficult models rank up) but I like this idea of using them to add to the narrative of the army.
