Voltan's Altdorf guard vs Vampire counts (2000pts)

I've been trying the light council out for a few games and it's been doing ok as long as they don't flee off the board T1! (Damn you Hellcannons+fluffing rerolls!)

Voltan sighed, exhaling a large cloud of thin blue smoke as he read the most recent missive to arrive on his already groaning desk. This had been the third such report of leathery wings flapping overhead, shadows blotting out the moon, the air carrying the sickly sweet aroma of death or reports of corpses rising in alleyways and freshly dug graves and shuffling off towards the north of the the city and the barren hills. He suspected a foul necromancer had moved into the area. Tapping out his pipe, he considered how to respond and figured that sending a detachment of troops from the city's garrison will keep them on their toes as well as allow him an opportunity to try out his brother's idea of sending a coven of those so called 'Light' wizards. He'd better have a word with his uncle Vaul at the temple to see if a small force of Knights panther would able to lend their armoured might. Muttering a prayer to Sigmar, the arch lector sat back in his chair and decided this was the time to try out the newly built steam tank he had commissioned as Karl Franz's economic advisor. "Let's see if we can stamp this out before it begins, because when there is a necromancer around, they're usually a real pain to get rid of."

As Vanin strode through the barren hills carrying the regimental banner of his company on their first ever mission, he followed a trail or gnawed bones and half glimpsed creatures flitting in the foggy haze permeating the rolling hills. His large unit of halberdiers marched in perfect unison beside him, whilst one of the warrior priests of the temple of Sigmar shouted prayers to exhort the men at his side. To his left a unit of the imperial pathfinders was strung out along his flank, shepherding the two odd looking men in hooded ivory robes that were being brought along to counter any evil magics and perhaps respond with some of their own. Rather them than me he thought, making the sign of the hammer over the comet emblazoned on his chest.
Behind him he could hear the low bass rumble of a battle hymn being sung by the priest marching with the greatswords, their full plate armour clinking heavily together forming an odd sort of counterpoint. He turned at a large whooshing sound that was accompanied by a terrible grinding noise as the lumbering behemoth 'Nemesis' rumbled along the far side of his greatswords. That thing better not get stuck in the mud today like it had done several times already upon their journey - his men had better things to do than keep digging that infernal machine out of the muck!
Peering to his right, he was looking for the final components of his company, a small contingent of Knights panther and three knights gryphon riding fearsome demigryphs eager to test the control over their mounts. He spotted them in the distance, escorting the huge bronze great cannon up onto the top of a nearby rise. Good he thought, it will finally be in a position to help if we come across these nightmares.

Returning his attention to the army's line of march, he thought he saw shapes in the mist as a pathfinder ran breathlessly back towards his lines. Wasting no time he called out sharply to the greatswords at his rear, "Take up a flanking position when the enemy shows himself and make sure you keep that giant hunk of metal to your flank, when it gets stuck, it'll at least provide you with some protection!" The men around him laughed grimly as they appreciated their commanders dark humour, but every single man hoped deep down it would be able to help them against the foul creatures of the undead.
Looking to his right he could see the cannons crewmen preparing the machine whilst the knights had already strung themselves out in a semi circle to outmaneuver the approaching force. He was glad he could trust them to get on with the job.
His orders quickly paid off as he noticed a large horde of what looked like people, but savagely twisted and emaciated with malformed bones, taut sinews and lean muscles came tearing towards them far off to his left as the clatter of bones and the sound of a ghostly bugle heralded the arrival through the mist of more forces of the undead. Directly ahead was a a group of skeletons surrounding a bent figure in a dark robe, while a shambling horde of zombies stumbled towards his lines to the right, them in upturn being flanked by a unit of heavily armoured skeletons with enormous two handed swords marching under a tattered banner of moth-eaten dirt stained cloth and accompanied by a lithe looking creature in dark red armour. Just then, a piercing shriek made him wince as he looked up to see two giant beasts with massive wings wheeling above the opposing force. One landed towards his far right, with what looked like a flock of smaller brethren in front of it, whilst the other touched down out of sight behind group of skeletons directly opposite him.

More to come, enjoying writing it in a story format, but will probably skip to a more clinical blow by blow now that deployment is finished! Let me know what you think....

I like it...but I want to know how it ended!  :-D

I like your story battle report (I've done two myself). Breathes some life into the models and if characters do survive (doubtful) then good to see their journey.

Do you have any pictures?

Unfortunately not, which is why I thought I would write a story!
Sadly had a pile of crap dumped on me in the last 24 hours so we'll see if I can find some time soon to finish it off...

Thanks for the feedback! Its much appreciated... will see if I can hammer out the rough details of the fight later this evening if I ever get back from the hospital! :)
