Title: Current Detachment rules - is my understanding wrong?!
Post by: Noble Korhedron on January 13, 2017, 02:21:19 PM
Seems I need to go re-read my Army book; I just copied the following quote from an old thread located here:
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,50212.msg942503.html
It's some guy's 2.4K 'pike and shot'-style Empire army.

Is the following quote from Fideils actually accurate? I find it hard to believe they would NERF Detachments so badly, seeing as how they are supposedly one of the Empire's greatest strengths....
Personally, I do not think the new benefits really outweigh the drawbacks:
- detachments causing panic
- no "automatic" flank charge in case of countercharge
- needing 10 models in two ranks to disrupt an enemy (which has lost much of its shine because of steadfast, anyway)
- support fire suffering -1 to Hit for S&S

O ye of liitle faith!

Unless specified otherwise, normal rules apply.

In 6/7 ABs, it was specified that Detachments
- do not cause Panic in other Empire units
- do not suffer the -1 modifier for S&S, when conducting Support Fire
- can attack the enemy in the Flank, as long as they have LoS and enough movement, when executing a Counter/Support Charge

The 8 AB does not specify any of these, therefore normal rules apply. Note that 8 AB also does not allow a Support Charge anymore.

Regarding disruption: all AB follow the normal rules here - but the 8 AB has the worst rules for our Detachments.

Some may think that the conferral of psychological effects outweighs these nerfs, but, in my opinion, they do not, in particular given the rise in point cost of state troops.

From my reading of the AB, support charges ARE allowed, but cannot automatically choose to flank the enemy unit; also, support fire is also allowed, but will suffer from -1 to hit as normal....

DAMN YOU, AUTHOR OF THE 8TH ED. ARMY BOOK!!

1. Nope, no Support Charge anymore - only Counter Charge.

Empire AB p. 30: "Detachments are trained to support their Regimental Units and protect them in battle. If an enemy unit declares a charge against a Regimental Unit, and the Regimental Unit does not flee as a charge reaction, then each of its unengaged Detachments within 3" can make either a Support Fire or a Counter Charge action."

And that is it - there are no rules allowing a Support Charge.

2. What you said about Support Fire is what I said about Support Fire.
