Recently, I got to do a once in a life time visit to a gentleman who has, arguably, the largest Warhammer collection in the world especially our beloved Empire! Steveb is not only a great miniature collector but human being, with many stories of his life, military, and craft. He told Grutch that this site has been a haven for him, as he can share and be inspired by all of us who love this hobby. Steve, unfortunately, is very sick and I wanted to publicly start this thread so we can show him much love and support through this trying time.
Steve you will always be the craziest miniature madman I know :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
Much love and support for you and your wife
Zak

Steve your army is freaking legendary, and I remember just gazing at your pictures in awe when I first joined up. Heck, every few months I go back and look at them. Every time I do I see more amazing details I didn't notice before.
Hope you beat this sickness into the ground, we're pulling for you.
-
Wishing you a fast recovery SteveB, your collection inspires us all to keep on working.
I love the Royal Air Corp :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Zak ... thanks for starting this thread!

SteveB ... one the best of the best.
It had just occurred to me recently that I hadn't seen your presence around here much.
My thoughts and prayers with you, your wife, and family. Your collection, painting, and stories of the figures rank with my favorites of all time. The Steam Tank Force, it's an armada of imagination, nifftyness, and Imperial magnificence.
May your illness be defeated in good time, and I dream of making a pilgrimage to SteveB land to see your miniatures in the real!
Thank you again for the wonderful wizard you made, painted and sent to me during one of the exchanges here on W-E, it is loved, protected, and I think of you every time I see it.
:icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
All the best is hoped for you,

Steveb, the man the myth the legand in his own time.
This says it all really. I'm one of your admirers, and am more than a bit envious to zak having witnessed your collection with his own eyes. I wish I could.
Hope to witness more of your creativity and vision. Hope you get better!

Get well soon, SteveB. Once you are through the worst, why not try some modelling and painting as a recuperation aid? Sounds good, eh?
-
Get well soon Steveb :::cheers:::

Last night I was browsing through the first few pages of my plog here looking for an old image someone was asking about, and I got sidetracked reading some comments from a few years ago. Many were from steveb, and it hit me that I hadn't seen much from him in a while.
Hope your health improves, Steve!
-
Good of you to announce this zak !
Steve, I cannot appplaud you enough. Your endless hobby inspiration has been a beacon.
Also, you sir are one of the very few people in the world whose pictures I regularly show to my wife.
Along with the lines "See dear, my collection really isn't anything out of the ordinary. This man for example has a lot more stuff"
Of course, she's not falling for that any more now, but it helped a while.
Also, your eternally positive and encouraging remarks have made you stand out from the crowd. I cannot for the life of me remember an occasion where you solely critisized another persons' work without pointing out the effort made and your admiration for that.
You are one of the giants of this site. Thank you for occasionally letting me stand on your shoulders to take a project just that little bit further.
About your illness : I hope you beat it buddy. I'm not a religious man, so no prayers, but I'll be rooting for you at least.
All the best.
Peter

I took the liberty of correcting the slight typo in the title...

Hope you get better SteveB. You've always been one of those pillars of the W-E.com community.
Thanks for that band of huntsmen you painted all those years ago. They proudly adorn my study.
-
Hi steveB
As a relative newcomer to this site, I did not know your reputation. Quickly I found that you were a highly respected member of WE. As with said above, all your comments and advice are uplifting. I always loved that signature someone quoted of yours ‘ take 2 aspirin and go paint’. I get that completely.
Hope you conquer this illness.
Thanks! 😺

You have always been an inspiration to me. Your modeling and painting has given me countless ideas to explore. When my wife complains that my collection is to big, I have showed her yours on several occasions. I just want to say thanks and get well soon.
-
Get well big man!
The inspiration of youre estalian gallopers was brilliant and youre flying giant still amazes me till today.

I wish you all the best! Get well soon!

Hi SteveB
Like others I thought you hadn’t been around recently but your profile said you’d been active a day or so before so assumed ‘Life’ was getting in the way.
Sorry to hear that it’s one of ‘Life’s’ bad aspects and hope you soon recover.
You are one of the highlights on this Forum, whether it’s the strange inventions (airforce and Stanks come immediately to mind), the painted pieces from your ancient lead pile or your general comments that guide, encourage and inspire.
All the Best

my sentiments exactly, both the admiration as well as the envy part and of course the well-wishes. Looking forward to that youtube reveal as well!
-
I am saddened by this news :icon_sad: as the others said before me steveB is one of the giants of this site and his collection is awe inspiring....from masses of foot troops and cavalry, to whole battalions of artillery and steam tanks, not to mention the city of Buggerhof (silent H)....I mean man you are one of the big inspirations around here. I hope you get better Steve and though I am not very religious myself, I will still pray for your speedy recovery in my own way. The WE community will await your renewed contribution to this site so that our muse and inspiration continues to be tugged at by your wonderful works.
-
SteveB is what keeps me coming back here having abandoned almost all other warhammer related forums after the debacle that is AoS . I must go through his army photos at least once a week.
Take care SteveB and get well soon.

thanks to all for your comments, support, and prayers. They are more appreciated than you can imagine. I would like to thank Zak for starting this post and the other posting he is doing. I am still painting, although on a reduced basis. My illness has been known by a few for a little while but I had asked them not to spread it around as I did not want the attention and hoopla that usually follow. The prognosis is not positive at all but I am going to go down fighting it all the way, so I ask you to continue with the positive thoughts they really lift my spirits and help me through each day. Bless everyone on this site. steveb

+1 to this for sure. You keep being awesome SteveB.
-
Bless you Steve.
If you permit, I will light a candle for you.
I don't think I can count the # of times I've gone through your pics. Knowing that this was just the "Empire" portion of your collection was staggering to me. I can't think of a single mini-collector out there who has so completely married the fun and whimsy of tiny fantasy figures with really cool armies that are painted well. All your diorama's told a story, and I, like probably everyone else, could hear the story being played out.
Through it all I have sensed someone who really gets what the point of all this is. Having fun painting what you want.
I envy Zak, I always wondered what a tour of your collection would be. I imagined days and days of holding figures going "oh, this is from the X collection by X" "Never thought I would see one of these" "I didn't think those actually existed".
Blessings.
-
I'll light a candle for steveb too. Literally, as I suspect Dihenydd and others have done. Get well soon.
-
Keep fighting that disease steveb! Lure it in with one detachment, flee with it so its charge fails and then in your turn counter charge with the parent regiment plus the second detachment!
-
HIs collection will become Immortal :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

Our prayers are with you Steveb and its good to know you still watch this site and the comments we leave.....as Zak said your work will become immortal.

Had a great talk with Steve the other day, we talked about his collections and how he came into contact with some of the rarest minis around. He also talked about the good ol'days of gaming conventions and history of figures I never knew about, He also talked about how many of his figures are painted with historical accuracy with the real world influences on models. Great conversation.
:::cheers:::
-
Sooo... how did he come into contact with some of the rarest minis?
Any chance to of relaying some of what SteveB has told you into the commentary of some of your videos? I'd love to hear what he had in mind when creating his armies, regiments, heroes etc.
-

nice...he also gave me drawings and notes on his different projects. I'm going to add these at a later date. He's been gaming sense the later 70's!! so he's just been there and done that sort of thing lol
-
There are threads here on W-E that have pictures of some of his miniatures, and the fluff he provided with some of them was quite unique at times.
It'd be great to have a thread where pictures of units are provided with the fluff for them along side. Although this could be quite the project.
I might be willing to make a trip to have him relate the stories, and write it all down for him, if that makes things easier.
-
Steveb is in hospice care now. Please send him positive vibes, prayers or whatever you believe in, to include his wife Peggy...thank you
-
Thinking about you lots SteveB.
-
We will light a candle. Hopefully he gets better quickly!
-
SteveB ...
You are an awesome person, and Peggy probably knows this more than most of us, leaving us to mostly only imagine the greatness that you bring to all the rest of your life's activities. Make sure you show her this post! :icon_biggrin:
Your spirit in creating and painting and story telling has inspired me more than I know how to describe. The wizard figure that you converted and painted for me back during one of those pleasant exchange threads is proudly displayed to many others who are involved with the hobby or not in my area. It brings great pleasure to my nephews and nieces as well.
After reading this from one of your posts ... "my old suggestion is forget it, take two aspirins and go paint", I immediately quoted it in my signature on this site, and I want to have it remain there.
I realize you might not want some of the "hoopla" that goes into such situations, and you're not giving up the fight, although just know that there are many here that love you, and pass such love along to Peggy as well, for my father taught me to say what's important before I can't.
Cheers! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

Me too.
I have been quiet this thread because I honestly dont have the words. I am proud of our little global community here, and there is no denying that Steve is part of the core of us. Thanks zak for doing what you are doing.
-
It is very difficult to know what to say.
As far as I am aware steveb is the only one older than me on this site, and still I get all the Methuselah jokes.
I suppose it is a part of the modern world that the internet lets us create a sort of family with people all across the globe, and we can feel genuine sorrow when one of us is in pain.
Several of us will recall losing Rufas some years back, when real life came along to take him far too early - I am not a religious man, but keep fighting steveb, we're all thinking of you.
-
I have been thinking about Steveb a lot recently, for obvious reasons. I haven't said anything because it's difficult to work out what to say and how to say it when you know someone only through a forum. I do know, however, that Steveb loves the hobby and escaping to the old world of Warhammer in a way I recognise and share (like so many of you) which means I feel like I know a part of his mind really well. I hope he is aware (I am sure he is) just how much interest and joy his posts have generated, and that Zac's new videos Zak are now doing more of the same. The collections are fascinating, creative, and full of lovely touches and twists.
When I first became aware of Steveb's posts, it was through his collection of steam tanks, and for a while I thought his interest lay specifically with collecting large numbers of them. But I soon learned how wrong I was.
Steveb, do everything you can to get better. And then, keep on Warhammering. With your armies you could conquer the entire Warhammer world!
-
As far as I am aware steveb is the only one older than me on this site, and still I get all the Methuselah jokes.
That is because of your looks
-
I was able to talk to Steve yesterday ( Jan. 1, 2019) wishing him a good new year. He was very incoherent, Its sad to see his steady decline. Anyway ill let you know how things go from this point forward. His wife Peggy asked me to make the videos into a DVD to play at his memorial. :icon_cry:
-
I'm very sorry to hear that. Thank you for keeping in contact like that zak and doing all this.
-
We will all have to go one day, and I hope that for SteveB and everyone of us that when the time comes that we are surrounded by family + friends, calm and happy with our lives.
-
I've seen you on the middlehammer group on FB, great job getting his stuff out there Zak.

OH yeah !! cool give me a shout out!!

I tend to really feel loss deeply, and this one is already growing inside of me. He is such a good guy. I will miss his input here, and glad he is living on in his figures.
Zak ... your efforts with this are such an important way to keep SteveB's legacy moving forward. Thanks again, and again, and again ...
-
Yeah, great initiative.
Too bad it comes with the negative side...
But at least Steve got to know our appreciation for his work.

I don't post a lot these days but have to wholeheartedly second this statement and the feelings it represents.
Thinking about you SteveB and hopefully you can feel the support from all of us.
-
Talked to Peggy steveb wife. She wanted to universally thank the 12 blood donors that gave blood for steveb. He is now in a rest home being cared for full time.
-
Give us the address of the home - we should all send cards - from all over the world.
He has touched all of us - we should show how much.

I'm 100% onboard with the card idea.

I know you americans have trouble with geography, but is that sufficient for members posting from outside of North America?
I assume Ar = Arizona?
Is that their home or the Care Home?

AR is for Arkansas.
Also, I'd recommend if you're sending to the US, including USA below the city state and zip code could be good.

This is terribly sad! He was a true living legend and he will be sorely missed..
-
The quote I have from him in my signature ...
"... my old suggestion is forget it, take two aspirins and go paint" steveb
It won't take away the loss felt, although it is classic, and I could see him approving.
I will drink a toast in his honor this weekend, and ... I will paint. :::cheers:::
I can't say much else at the moment, too sad. :icon_frown:

Damn. This really saddens me. I don't know squat about his personal life, but he always seemed like a decent bloke to know. Correspondence always polite and witty, pleasure to work with.
Insane awe at his dedication to the hobby. Had perfect attitude about this whole thing.
Never saw him argue, or politick or rant. Did see him peacemake on occasion.

What a huge loss and what a great idea!

What terrible, terrible news. I've spent hours looking for the absolutely perfect card to send to him.
I for one am going on a painting binge in his memory.
-
Finding a card was very difficult - lots of "Get Well Soon" ones and then the Sympathy ones.
I finally found a simple "Thinking of You" one, but sadly it's too late.
Well I think I will still send his good lady a Sympathy card - she probably needs to know exactly how much we all cared for him.
-
I'm definitely for painting in his honor this weekend. Not sure what yet, and will decide that in the coming days. Sunday is going to be a snow day, and I will likely paint something then.
Tonight ... my toast spoken out loud with a glass of Italian Primitivo ... "To Steve B.'s classiness and gentleness, to his painting, storytelling, and creativity, in the memory of his greatness, long may our memory be thinking of him as we enjoy the hobby with his presence in mind. Three cheers ... huzzah ... huzzah ... huzzah! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
God bless his family and friends, and may good memories balance out the loss felt at this time. :smile2:
I haven't bought a card yet, but will soon, and send it to Peggy accordingly.

I ran into the same issue with cards, and have done the same
I will also toast in his honor and paint something Imperial. Was going to kitbash an engineer, but with the impending snowpocalypse arriving tomorrow, I think I may have to do something thats already prepped & primed.
-
Dammit! I am always too late :icon_sad:
Our band grows smaller with each loss and I wish I would not work this weekend. I wish I could just sit and paint for SteveB.
I hope he will play some good games in with them angels.
-
I will keep the memory of Steveb close to my heart as even though I only knew him on these forums, he was a great inspiration for me and a gentleman the likes of which you hardly find around these days. I hope that this is just the start of his converting, painting and playing for him and who knows maybe he is already organising a game with Rufas too.....that is what I want to think anyway as i am too sad due to his loss.
-
what you are all saying is why I love this site :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
-
Going through a box I found a card that Peggy gave Steveb for one of their anniversaries, "To my soul mate, I will love you for the rest of our lives".... this was a happy find in the sense that they were so in love to the end. Guys I really think these cards are going to help her out so much knowing she was not the only one that cared so much.
-
Damn! Now I remember how I miss Rufas too... :icon_sad:
I am however certain Rufas and SteveB are setting up a game in the Halls of Elysium as we type.
-
Rest in Peace SteveB.
When I get back home, I will write a letter. Maybe someone can proof read it?

Hey guys I’ve been out in business and just received the news. SteveB was a pillar of our community, one who’s creativity was always an inspiration to all of us. I knew the outlook was not good yet prayed for his recovery. I’ll do what I can to immortalize his presence here. I’m at a bit of a loss for words. Travel well SteveB you will be missed.

Therefore, Belgium is now firmly settled in Washington DC.
I also took the liberty of adding Steveb to the "Old Ones" member group. I found that fitting.

Bit of a late reaction, but I wasn't sure on what to do with this information really..but I still wanted to say something
I haven't really had a connection with SteveB via this platform though I always looked up to him as being one of the monoliths of this community, he will be missed for sure! And keep up the good work Zak!
-
What SKS said. The brush and palette forum was never my preferred haunt on this site, and I only go there very occasionally - but one can't spend a lot of time on W-E and not be familiar with steveb's remarkable creativity and collection. Ping pong tables full of cavalry, renaissance helicopters, very uniquely mounted knights - all beautifully done, and all testament to a talented and busy mind that enjoyed going where no one had gone before.
I wish I could say I will miss him personally, but I never really talked to him. But I will certainly miss his presence on the site as a whole, as one of the cornerstones of the forums. He definitely was one of the greats of our hobby, and in all my years here, I never heard anyone talk about him with anything but admiration. And being this universally respected in a community as diverse as ours is no small feat in itself.
So farewell steveb!
:::cheers:::
-
On behalf of Steveb wife Peggy. Thank you all for the love and support you showed. Steveb Memorial service was yesterday, great turn out with full military honors ( he served in the Airforce during Vietnam) She had a display of Steveb work and had many questions about the small figurines and just how amazing his art was especially on such a small figure haha. Steveb remains are being flown out today ( 1-23-2019) and he will be laid to rest in Illinois, im not sure where.
His collection will be continued to be displayed in as much glory and coolness as I can muster with my limited understanding of technologies haha.
On a personal note thank you for the kind messages, posts, and support. I feel like this site is family in a weird dysfunctional way :-P
Now be happy and place his memory in a good place in your heads, he would have told you to smile and keep painting !!! :smile2:
