In the US Army, Specialist is a rank. Same pay grade as Corporal, but not necessarily a leadership position. I am no longer the rank of Specialist (that photo is a few years old now) but the title of my military occupational specialty is Public Affairs Specialist, Writer. Hopefully that answers your question?
