I know what you mean, but the law is there because of insurance purposes. It's also the same for pedestrians etc. because in a car accident, someone needs to pay for the damages. Insurance can always pay for them, ergo, the one with insurance is always wrong.

And that's why all people in the Netherlands are required by law to have an 'aansprakelijkheidsverzekering' (personal liability insurance?) with minors falling under the insurance of their parents.

Unfortunately this is not enforced in any way and there are probably more people out there without one than there are people who do!

And instead of adressing this problem at its root they instituted a blanket rule that the car driver is always in the wrong unless he can prove he is not, with the burden of proof lying almost 100% with the motorist. It's only in very clear cut cases (like hitting a cyclist on the freeway) that the driver is absolved of wrong.

You do not need a bike insurance to pay for damages, you just need that liability insurance.

Seriously, me and a good friend send each other letters sure it's not as easy or modern as skype/msn/gchat/facebook etc. but the feeling of getting a letter and reading it beast conversing on each othe above (unless it involves a webcam and girl in the bath in which case that wins over a letter...)

I actually really enjoy it and far more personal imo.

I know. Wasn't planning on going 1200kms to get to her (not yet, anyway). And I'm pretty sure she'd be pleasantly surprised if I showed up on the doorstep the day after she returned.
