Hey folks, I'm putting together an Ostland army. I mainly build scenery and have been working on the Burgomeister's Mansion for quite a considerable amount of time.
My army will be led by the Burgomeister himself. This plog will hopefully follow the progress of this army, the terrain associated with it and a wargaming table specifally built for this army. This will probably take some years to complete and I intend to document progress here.
To start things off, here's the Burgomeister's Mansion.

These photos were taken over a year ago and I have now weathered the building to look suitable Warhammereque.
More pics to follow shortly.

A-mazing, my friend. Cannot wait to see more. Welcome to the forums!

:::cheers:::
That is quite possibly the best bit of Warhammer scenery I've ever seen. A great way to introduce yourself here!
If you have an work in progress pics, please share them.

Nice to see this finally popped up in here! :eusa_clap: I've seen pics of this building on few other sites and watched all the making-of-videos , just amazing.

Please choose one or more of the following dry comments;
"That building is worth more than my house."
"The Burgomeister is compensating for something."

Holy crap! Submit that to MTV Cribs, I wanna see what the owner has in his fridge

I have stumbled on your project on another forum via a google search several months ago. I was (and still am) very impressed with the dimensions and the quality of this ambitious project. Well done! :::cheers:::
I hope you intend to post the work in progress shots of the building as well and maybe even the painting tips that I have seen from you. I'm sure the others would enjoy them as well.

-
That's AWESOME! Would love to see some of the more up-to-date pics (as well as the WiP pics everyone else has asked for) - the bottom layer looks a lot less weathered than the rest in the photos you posted, and I'm interested to see what you ended up doing with it.
Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the army. :)
-
Eh, it's alright.
-
Eh, it's alright.
lol

Hey, thanks for all the positive comments and feedback, always appreciated.

Must be the Bürgermeisters Mansion of Marienburg!
Incredible!
-
Outstanding work there. Do you have some picture on table with some miniatures to get a real sense of scale? Right now it's just hard to get a feel for just how large it is.
-
That is some of the best scenery I've ever seen, absolutely outstanding...
I can't offer anything constructive as I'm still far too busy wiping drool from my chin and trying to close my mouth!

Holy crapsticks. :o

Well folks, you’re all so kind. Here’s some progress pictures. The model stands 1.2m or 4ft in height. The model was constructed out of sheets of expanded PVC, which can be scored to give texture, wood grain, cracks, bricks etc. This is one big onion, it’s about the layers. This is the peak of the proverbial mountain. It’s design is based on the pine clad peaks of Ostland, mirroring it’s environment. It uses the resources of the surrounding landscape, timber, stone and clay bricks and tiles.
This picture is of the very early stage, just blocks with timber cladding and roofs, with the rest of the burgomeister’s stronghold.

Must be the Bürgermeisters Mansion of Marienburg!
Incredible!
That’s quite close the mark, I am working on a back story for the Burgomeister’s Mansion. The Mansion was built by the current burgomeister’s great, great (Maybe) grandfather who had a very lucrative trading company based in the docklands of Marienburg. Dealing mainly with exotic goods and expensive relics from throughout the known world. This business and his friendship with the ruling families of Ostland and Marienburg helped to elevate his status and wealth to epic proportions. He wished to display his wealth by building a Stronghold based on the design of the Ostland Elector counts grand palace in his home province of Ostland.

He he... When I saw the tower on the first picture, I thought "Hm. Someone is posting pictures of real buildings as an inspiration" But it turned out they were model buildings. And therefore even more of an inspiration, of course! :eusa_clap:

Can I have something like that, too ....PLEASE!!!!
This is probably THE best piece of WHF-Scenery I've ever seen.

Ostland can't afford any of that stuff. They spent all of their money on the mansion.

Amazing! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

So cool! You have far too much time on your hands! :icon_mrgreen:

Well...
Nothing else to be said really.

Truly amazing!

So far this has taken about 3 years, that's on and off in my dwindling spare time. It is not finished yet but will be by summers end. I keep getting distracted by others things.
One of which is this, the Ostland monument to Osvalde the bull, warrior priest hero.

Really like the cobblestone basing.
This is art I hope you keep us fed with pictures of your work as it is a real joy to watch it.

Wonderful scenery. The biggest compliment I can give and this has inspired me to build some scratch-built scenery myself. Obviously on a much less grand scale. I have been promising myself to try for over 20 years and have finally started as a result of you mansion. Thanks for sharing.
-
Absolutely stunning! The Great Sword looks good too.

Thanks and good luck, remember buildings are just simple block shapes with bits stuck on.
I'm new to this forum, I've had a quick look at people's work and there's alot of hobby love here. I find that very inspiring too.
Here's a unit filler for my gunmen.

SHUT. UP. :o

The mansion is great... I mean really amazing... but that unit filler... that rocks my world!
I've had pics of that mansion in my "inspirational pics" folder for ages. Glad to see you on the greatest forum known to manlingkind.
Pulls up chair... waits patiently for more.

Thanks, although I should describe it as a unit narrative, its called 'the rear rank',it helps to break up the blandness of the unit.

Thanks for the kind words folks.
I've seen some town walls on this site so I thought I'd share my work in progress. This has been made from many children's toy castles.

It is Falcon Castle by Simba, I bought about 30 of them off eBay a couple of years back, haven't seen any for a while.

This was all I could fit on the table, this is about one quarter of the project. The rest of the walls are half as tall and encompass a town.
Maybe one day I will finish it and have a fully painted garrison to boot.

Greater depths of madness are revealed with every post. It's awesome!
Where are you based? Do these projects have a chance of showing up at a Games Day or something, because it's a horrible waste if they're just sitting around your house (in the case of these castle walls, I imagine them literally going all the way around your house)...
-
Those drunkgunners are excellent, the bottle's shine effect is especially well done! Keep it up!
Cheers

True madness, I mean genius! Glad I stopped by the forum this evening.

Im in love.

It is even proper warhammer Style....like in the books.
I wonder if anyone still thinks the new Imperial Griffon is too big.

Very nice. Everything -- painting, modeling, figures & terrain. All top-notch work!

I'm based in deepest darkest Norfolk, UK. Unfortunely the castle is in my garage and will be for some time whilst I complete other projects.

The bottles were very easy to paint, Deneb stone and then 3 heavy coats of Orc flesh, it naturally pools at the bottom making it appear darker, let the coats dry before the next.

This is all just plain incredible.. project logs on this kind of epic scale and ambition only come along once every few years.
-
I remember looking at Falcon Castle and thinking it wouldn't be a good base for a Warhammer castle because of all the ridiculous low positioned arrow slits but it seems you've tackled the issue with plasticard.
The walls can be held by whole movement trays full of troops, do you actually have the numbers to properly defend such a massive structure?
Brilliant enviable madness. :smile2:
-
You know, having 6 or 7 sets of that toy castle myself, I thought that was a lot, but I now realise I need many more.

Thats one beefy hammer on the WP :) weres it from?
*edit* just gone back a page and seen your castle!!! :-o :-o :-o :-o amazing! , that thing belongs in one of those big scenes they do at games day and stuff

The head of the hammer is from the griffon statue from the empire mansion.

I don't have enough troops yet.

Kind words, comments like that really keep me motivated.
Here's the warrior priest again. Kitbashed from Flagellent legs, arms, weapon, banner and greatsword head and torso. I like this model as it was one of the first empire models I have painted and I like how the red turned out, I think the banner design is a little bland though and doesn't particularly work.

You need a whole house purely for the finished project.
What "kids toy castles" did you use for it?

It's the Superplay/Simba falcon castle

How much is it? I want one!!
I sound like I'm 4...
-
Depends on where you find it. I picked up some from a local toy store for €10-11 each. Sometimes prices go as far as €30 online.
I do recommend getting a second one to cannibalise for the back side of the walls.
-
Hmmm....
I don't know what my parents would think about me buying castles that say 3+ on them...
Although, it's £9 from debenhams..
Out of stock. Damn!

Well, does anyone know of any alternatives, model or toy, for under £15?
I looked at Zvezda, Superplay (of course), Imex, and GW etc...

That's a good price for the new castle. You can sometimes pick them up cheaper on eBay but then postage bumps it upto about a tenner.

Thought I'd have a go at May's painting comp: 5 missile troops. The banner is my first attempt at a free hand banner, I've been painting for a while but have always avoided free hand, I think it turned out well but the skull looks a bit wrong to me.
This unit is called Hakon's Handgunners. Hendrik Hakon was the Ferlangen Flintlocks regiment's sharpest shooter until he was dishonorably discharged for having a fling with the regiment commanders wife. He travelled back to his home town and joined the Burgomeister's garrison. He bought with him the professionalism, skills and customs of his previous regiment, hence the skulls and bones. His cartridge monkey is called Inky.

Yes, great stuff! I love the feathered hat on the skull on the banner pole, I will remember that for future projects!

Marvellous!

Hadn't noticed the feather cap on the skull before, that's just brilliant! At least with a skull it's supposed to look a little bit off, trying to put it on a regular head always makes it look off IMO.

Haha, priceless!

Priceless indeed, he also has a suitable german name. Witch Hunter Teutul, I don't think I'll be making a mounted chopper version though. Although that would be interesting, as he may have a supply of mechanical marvels and weapons at his disposal.

Some wicked kitbashing there...like it a lot.
Please oh please paint those flaggies....cant wait to see them
Great stuff all-round.

Smooth exchange of legs! I have always thought the Elven ones looks too small for an imperial torso. Was it an easy swap? Might make an attept at it on day.
Will be great to see it painted with your high level!

Thanks folks, I've had a bit of a break from posting, busy with work and trying to finish my first Empire unit.

The elven legs needed to be clipped out then I cleaned it up with a scalpel, it was pretty hard going but worth it.

I haven't started the flagellants yet.
I have the week off work so I'm determined to get the Burgomeister's mansion mostly finished. It's all in the detail, very time consuming, I will try and post my progress each day.
Today has been a bling it on day. I have been working on the Burgomeister's coat of arms on the front of the building, after making this I think it would make a nice banner, either painted 2d or as is. It shows the burgomeister's military career of starting out as a spearman, then promotion to a swordsman and finially the honor of being in the greatswords. It also has the Ostland bulls head and the obligatory skulls, twin-tailed comets and griffins of the Empire.
Also added some bling to the entrance, I like the contrast with the grandure opulence and the almost derelict.

if you feel kind can you run me through your freehand technique?
is it all about pencil outline first , or do you get straight in and paint?

Good lord, what a building, the very tip of it has to be my favourite, that weathered green is photo realistic. Outstanding.

Thanks all for the positive feedback.

:eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
Paint banner background colour(s), make sure it is opaque and solid. I then pencil on the design using a graphic pencil. Find the centre, section if needed and have plenty of reference material to get the design right. I then block in the base colours, let dry thoroughly as the pencil will scrape paint off. I then pencil in the details, i.e. for the skull, eyes, nose teeth, then go over this with a very fine brush and very thinned down dark brown paint. Then highlight and shade. Pencil is good because if you make a mistake you can lick your finger and rub it off, don't use the pencil rubber as it leaves residue. Hopes this helps, although looking at your banners I think you're doing excellently. This was my first attempt at a freehand banner and although it took alot of time I am happy with it and am looking forward to painting more. Good luck.
And for today's update I have been accessorizing. Not sure that's spelt right. Mainly crates, barrels, buckets and a couple of sword racks. Not quite finished, the rust needs calming down a bit and the swords need some paint. Also a shot of work in progress on the justice facade, and the 'store room' never before seen on the interwebs ooooohh! LOL. Hope you enjoys it.

I return to this forum every month, and what a topic to chose! I too am Ostland and I can proudly say that even Valmir would be satisfied with it! I myself would most definitely move to live in if it were real, though as a terrain piece it trumps just about everything else I've ever seen...

If I had the time, that would be the dream. You can see from earlier posts that I have a few other buildings to go around the mansion to create a stronghold. This will be put on the back burner with the castle as I want to focus on creating a complete gaming table. This is planned to be an urban table, I want to create something different from the standard 'green' table. I have the plan and the designs for the separate elements. It will be based around a monument square so as not to be too cluttered for a game. The centre of the square will house the monument of Osvalde, featured earlier in this post. The square will be sunken into the ground making the flanks higher level, hills, these are accessed via steps. On theses raised areas are situated buildings and a triumphant archway entrance. There will also be planters with trees to add some greenery. I intend to make fountains and other smaller monuments/statues to add to the open areas. It's a grand project, all I need now is a stack of time. All progress will be documented here and I may create some video files on techniques used.
Yesterday saw no progress as I went to my graduation ceremony, was good fun, got to dress up in a cape and silly hat again. Sounds superheroesque but so isn't. Today I was back bling again, working on finials. Here's an action shot.
-
(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/bishmeister/scan0001.jpg)
First sketch for the urban table. All elements are modular and moveable. The left hand side will possibly mirror the right hand side. The table consists of two raised sections and two lower sections. It measures 8' by 4' but about 1' on each end is covered in buildings creating a playable area of 6' by 4'. This is extendable by adding another lower 2' by 4' section in the middle making a 8' by 4' playable area. This will also make it less cluttered in the middle and enable me to include the larger monument to Osvalde, featured earlier.
What do you think? Do you have any suggestions or tips on what makes a great gaming table? Hopefully I will be able to incorporate some suggestions into the final design and finished piece.

Just realised that I hadn't posted the design for the larger Osvalde monument. This would be used with the extra 2' by 4' flat section in the middle.

Inspirational stuff! Might be stealing ideas very soon... :)
Truly impressive, modelling and painting.

Here's a maquette for an empire mausoleum. This can go as high as you like. The idea behind this is that it looks like the mountain peaks of the Empire. Each entrance leads into a separate burial chamber, the higher the status, the higher up the mauseleum you are, less likely to be robbed or desecrated. It's kind of like a fortified burial ground. This maquette was made to see if my designs would actually work, and they do. The final design is in the shape of an imperial cross. It is topped off with the Monument of Oswalde.

-
Looks really awesome. Imagining a whole mountain made from this.
How did you make those entreances btw?
-
While the mausoleum looks cool, I'd think there needs to be more space sideways and height wise or they would run into trouble with the actual crypts behind the doors. The walls and ceilings wouldn't be very strong with space you are allowing for there.
-
That is stunning!

Now working on some hanging banners for the Mansion. These two illustrate the Burgomeister's nickname of 'charging bull'. I like the bull image, found it on the interwebs, however I think the banners look a bit too clean, a bit of weathering is needed. What do you think?

dang, nice :::cheers:::
the whole idea of building some amazingly detailed building is too much for me, I can see it would destroy my life!
I'd be there at 4 am painting window panes !
-
Wow. Just. Wow. I really aught to put more into my work. I have plans for something similar to this, but not really anything like this at all.
Gosh, I just gotta put my dang foot down and get cracking!
-
Can I bring my armies and play at your house????
-
awsome! :biggriin:
-
Wow, stunning banners! But yes, some weathering might make them even better...
-
Exceptional talent, sir!
-
Wow, really cool stuff! Keep em coming!
-
Well, wow..
-
Shouldn't weathering be in line with that of the building?
-
Um, yeah...this is utterly bonkers and made of pure awesome. I'm not gay or anything, but if I was....
-
I think weathering is definitely needed. As a matter of fact their color should probably be sun bleached, but it's probably a little late for that. If they aren't old then just some light weathering is needed.
-
Thanks for the feedback, duely noted. Banners now weathered.
-
Personal choice, but I think it would look good with the bottoms tattered as well.
Of course a burgomeister of such standing might well go to the expensie of having more made if they actually were damaged like that, so either way, good job!
-
I wouldn't have the banners too worn. If the family can afford a place like that, they can afford to have their staff take down the banners in bad weather and replace them if they get too worn.
-
It is pretty awesome, you clearly have an excess of talent and storage space!
It would be pretty awesome for a skirmish game like Mordheim, but I don't think you could use it as a piece of scenery in a normal game!
You should seriously consider sending the pictures to GW, they have put less impressive things on the blog. Don't know if that's something that would appeal or not, but this project is certainly worthy of a larger audience.
-
HOLY CANNOLI what a fortress! It must be the greatest stronghold in Ostland!

Thanks for the feedback.
Here some views of the other elevations of the Burgomeister's Mansion.

This model is soon to be completed. It needs to be broken down into it's individual parts so I can add some weathering and moss in hard to reac places and then glued together. The banners also need to be completed.

speechless here !
-
This is truly awesome. I love the amount of detail you've put into it, even random bits like the extra weathering on the steps as they pass under the arch of the front approach - it just adds that extra authenticity to the whole thing. I'd love to play a game on a board full of your scenery but I'd be scared that I'd damage it and the karma gods would smite me for it :P
-
There are huge models. And there are intricately detailed models. And there are models painted with incredible skill & detail. You've got it all. Simply amazing work!

I have no idea how much it weighs but it's not heavy, maybe less than 5kg.
More designs, this one is for a castle/keep/fortified house.

Stuff looks amazing and I'm looking forward to the stuff in that design but one question. What are you going to do with it!? haha
-
sorry if you already stated , but what are the dimensions of this amazing building?
::heretic::
-
And weight was answered, but what about the structural integrity?
-
Just saw this, truly truly amazing!

has GW seem this yet??? the need to :::cheers:::

Thanks all. The Burgomeister's Mansion is 1.2m tall 400x400mm base. The above castle will be approx 1.05m tall wirh a 400x400mm base.
Here is the back of the banners previously illustrated, thought I'd have a go at NMM, I am pleased with the result, only two more banners to paint.

More banners, not as nice as the others, these are situated at the rear of the building.
Also finally managed to get round to making a tarp roof for the stores. This is made from the fore topgallant sail from one of the Burgomeister's old trading ships. This was deliberately painted plainer (less highlighting/shading) as the banners would be of much better quality than a sail.
I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, I have a week of annual leave comming up soon so this beast should soon be finished. This has been a labour of love but I can't wait to work on something else.
-
That sail roof is really cool! Great to see it coming to and end!

You know, I was thinking the same thing...
Have you thought about installing 3-4 dim orange/yellow LEDs (with separate switches) in some of the rooms?
That would look kick-ass during nighttime.
Especially if you can make them work like Christmas tree lights with programs. Lights turning off in one room only to turn on in an adjacent room a few seconds later.
That would make it horrifyingly realistic! ::heretic::

As it would be candles and oil lamps, you would need to have a small LED move between the rooms and 'light' the bigger ones if you wanted it more realistic.
-
Why not just clone very tiny people?
-
cast a spell on yourself and live inside it as a tiny person :eusa_wall:
-
OK folks this is getting out of hand, LOL. I won't be shrinking myself or cloning tiny people, i considered lighting early on in the project but decided against it due to extra work involved and this piece primarily being a piece of terrain, when would I ever switch the lights on and fully appreciate the work involved, not often I think. It's too late for lighting now as the windows were painted black. Thanks for all the comments, even the silly ones.

What a treat to come across this thread for the first time
Truely inspirational and a bit depressing at the same time
:-)
Warhammer World should have an exhibition of your work so we can get to see it

Also, flickering LEDs should be placed around to give the impression of a lit fireplace.

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and smiley faces, it makes the whole experience alot more gratifying.

The ivy is brass etched ivy from 4d models. Fairly expensive but nice.
http://www.modelshop.co.uk/product/1%3A12_Etched_Garden_Ivy_LP00101
The vines/trees are homemade. Thin wire twisted together and then covered in zap a gap superglue, then hit with zip kicker catalyst. One has 'growies' or sponge flock for foliage.
Today I have been painting banners again, these are now finished, hooray.

well that's truly amazing/inspiring work ! thanks for sharing man and your video is awesome ;)

Wonderful!

Thanks again for all the kind comments, this really is a very supportive community.
I have been working on a tree that I would like to include on the model, this seems a tad ridiculous but I think it suits the warhammer world. It will receive more paint and extra dangling roots before it is finished.
Let me know what you think, shall it stay or shall it go?

Ridiculous is always awesome for Warhammer!
-
These are easily the greatest buildings I've ever seen for warhammer! The only thing I noticed that I don't love is the brightness of some of the ivy on your latest pictures but I think thats just me imagining things.

Great photo, makes the tree seem a little less ridiculous.

Thanks for the feedback, I also thought the ivy was a bit bright but you get used to it, I may still dull it down a little.
Tree finished with empire religious symbols and the obligitory ravens.

Excellent tree! Bet you are glad you kept it now. I like the sense that it has been almost adopted as part of the building.
Do I see a crow's nest? I've been meaning to suggest swallows and / or pigeons, but I can let you off with just crows if you like! :icon_wink:
-
I am glad to keep the tree, I feel it makes the building more warhammeresque. A crows nest indeed.
I've been working on the large gold onion dome finials today, these have replaced the griffons that I just couldn't seem to make work. I've also included some random pics.

btw how did you make the ballustrade?
-
The Mansion is finished! Pictures will follow when I can get some decent shots with sky.
The ballustrade post are from model ship supplies, then rest is platicard.
Here's some designs of a empire tower I drew whilst in Rome.

You are a crazy man, but crazy in a good sort of way.
-
Do you have a tutorial link or something that explains how you do the copper weathering, which I think is by far the best weathering effect on the whole model?
Great catch on the kislev inspired onion domes, it themes the model very nicely. Also I have never seen red brickwork used with such success on a warhammer model before. The way they actually add to the overall look of the model, without being "red-bricks-are not-warhammer-historicly- correct".
-
lol , you are like an architect !
-
First off.
I told myself I wouldn't let the fact that some people are way way better than me stop me from enjoying my own humble projects.
So I am simply going to ask, where did you get the monkeys and ravens? Those could be useful to me.
-
This whole blog is just so insane! I just struck me that the piece is priceless considering that in practice noone will ever pay to buy such a piece for what it actually is worth in material + effort hence priceless.
Its just perfect.
I got an idea though. Why dont you dissect a small klock and install the components in a tower and make a real klock. I mean, it cant be the hardest thing you done so far !
-

Monkeys come from the handgunners sprue and the ravens are from the empire general sprue off the shield.

I always wanted to be one, but now I get to make building I want to make.

No tutorial yet, but I plan on doing one in the future. There is a video tutorial on this plog for the brickwork though.
Since completing the Burgomeister's mansion I had completed the hangunners unit, pic to follow, and have almost finished my general, either Prince Vultan or Valmir von Raukov, just the base to do. I am thinking of using the Morr statue from the Garden on Morr setwhich would be pinned to the back feet to give the impression that he is swooping down for the kill. I wanted the griffon to be part white lion, obtained from traders who visit Chrace and deal in griffon eggs. Lots of pics for a panoramic view.

Fantastic - what makes it stand out for me is the choice of colours.

That griffon is beautiful!

Thanks all.

I will write up a tutorial with colours at a later date.
The cloak is from the outriders kit with the weapon arm removed.
Back to work on the scenery now, here is the paving design for the monument square. This will 4'x4', 120cmx120cm. The white areas will be white, the darkest parts black and the mid tone is red. The centre piece can be covered with the monument to Osvalde the Bull. The four outer circles can be covered by columns with statues or circular ornate fountains.

I need some help with this floor plan.
I am happy with the design and intend it to be in the colours of Ostland, black and white with a splash of red.
What do you think of the colour composition?
Do you think it will be too 'busy' to game on?
Also I like the 3rd pic with the corner flooring patterned, this will cover the other three corners also.
Is this a step too far?
Comments, criticisms and suggestions welcome.

Very good choice. Always liked that combo.
Do you think it will be too 'busy' to game on?
Hm. Maybe. Black and white is a very sharp contrast. But if you make both the black and white a bit dirty, dusty and worn, perhaps it will work better as a background?
Also I like the 3rd pic with the corner flooring patterned, this will cover the other three corners also.
Is this a step too far?
Honestly it might be a bit too far. It clashes a little with the chequered border. I like the second pic better.
I think this floor is going to look absolutely awesome.
-
I really like this pattern. As Maza says, a bit of weathering will soften it slightly and add some subtle variations. As would some missing or cracked flagstones etc etc.
As for the "extra" patterning I would say
a - trust your instincts, they've done nicely this far!
b - it's Warhammer and it's Empire, so any erring should be on the over-elaborate side!
I'm intrigued - will you be painting this onto a flat surface, laying the floor with individual hand made coloured tesserae, or just knocking it out on a colour laser printer? ;)
-
Oh, and the griffon is fantastic. Like a dream.
-
I think the one without the extra corner pattern looks much better. Although I'm seeing all the white areas as white marble, so that it will be just a bit more than just big white expanses. That will give it just a bit more character and as others have said if you weather it some it will add even more to it.
-
I agree with Delthos, no corner quartering of squares, large white marble works better overall without taking away from the central image. some feather marbling of light grey or cream on the white marble would really make it interesting. Whatever you decide your innate sense of design will pull through. If any doubt, make two. I have really enjoyed your work so far, thank you for sharing with us. steveb
-
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I will do some more designs to help sort the issue. I would like to include the triangle design somewhere but maybe not on such a scale.

The flooring will be scored into a PVC sheet with all the cracks scored also, this takes forever :eusa_wall: It will then be painted as white and black marble with lots of weathering, like this
(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/bishmeister/2011-08-0508-19-48358.jpg)
Also I intend to paint the twin tailed comets a brass colour, like the 'brasses' you find on the floors of churches. It doesn't quite fit the colour scheme but I like the idea of combining metal and stone flooring.
I have been building Halberdiers recently. I was not satisfied with the lengh of their weapons so I have extended them so they look a little more threatening.

Thanks folks.
I have been base coating rank and file so I thought I would treat myself with a wizard.
This is Rutgar the Aged. This wizard has been a grey wizard for a very long time but has never managed to progress beyond the rank of novice, despite having a plethora of scrolls and books of spells. His 'familiar' has no magical ability, although Rutgar is convinced he has, and is just a plain old grey monkey named piffpaff. Despite this wizards ineptitude he makes for a handy dispel caddy for the other wizards.
This model is a kitbash. Head, hood and book in hand from wizard kit. Body from huntsmen, Pouch from pistoliers. Books, key, skulls and scrolls from flagellants. Monkey and vials from gunmen state troops.

Definitely stealing this scroll caddy too. Only thing I might change is the left hand. I might use the dwarf pipe bit. Also, I could find all the parts in my bits box within minutes, except for the head. I looked and looked and knew I had it. Of course, it was the fire wizard head without the fire hair! Great stuff Bishmeister. Keep it up.
-
Bish's work makes my soul smile.
-
Thanks for all the positive feedback.
Feel free to use any ideas, I see hobby blogs as seeding inspiration.
I certainly need to sort out my photo quality, maybe someday I will get round to making a light box.
Here are some rank and file I have been working on. I have only painted the front rank to a finished standard, the rest are base colours with a wash. All the models require bases and sheilds, I have the old bretonian bull head sheild for them all. The banner needs to be completed also. The models are basic swordsmen models with 'raven wings' attached to their shoulders. These were made by cutting the olive reef in half, these come with the empire kits.
This is a veteran swordsman regiment that is officially called the raven tower guard or just raven guard. Also known by others in the army as the 'crows feet' due to the average age of the soldiers.
I have decided to name most of the units in the army after the towers they guard/inhabit. This coincides with the fluff and scenery I will be creating, see earlier posts.
-
Painted this warrior priest today. The back banner was inspired by a warrior priest here http://www.puttyandpaint.com/
I came across this whilst looking at We7's work. This model is a kitbash. Flagellent legs, Knight arms and torso with sculpted collar, cloak from general kit, skulls and bell from flagellant kit, hammers from infantry kit with skulls added.

I can't wait to paint this model.

I can't wait to see it painted. :smile2:
Love the conversion, perfect for representing a wizzened, old wizard. Heck, he's a mobile library from the look of it. The ink feather is a great touch by the way.
-
Thats really really cool.
-
Great idea. Is that a skull inkwell with a quill in it, that I see behind him?
:eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
That is a wonderful conversion - it is similar to the Venerable Thaumataurge model you can get (and which I have, awaiting something!) But that is fantastic - all the little details etc. I think I may have to be inspired by that when I make mine - all the excess baggage is superb!
-
poop, now I Will have to add another project of my list of things to copy.. steveb

That is a great conversion, one which will just have to be imitated

Excellent. Not too sure about the candles, though.
-
Excellent conversion copy of the Gamezone mounted scholar, Looks better than the original. :eusa_clap:

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Fidelis, I agree about the candles, I will remove the flames and just leave wicks.
Ol profeesor, yes that's a feathered quil with inkwell, an afterthought which I am glad I thought of.
This plog has been quiet for a while but I have been busy. Not with Empire though, what! How dare I, I here you say.
I spent two weeks painting up the contents on the 2009 edition of spacehulk, didn't quite finish it but got most of it complete. You can see a plog here,
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/the-burgomeisters-mansion/forum/topic/painting-space-hulk-for-tabletop-nation-meet-up/
I intend to finish this in the near future.
I have also started a new terrain project, which is not Empire but is within the Empire. The rumoured release of high elves next month got me all giddy, I have a massive high elf army, and I have been looking for an excuse to realise some designs for high elf menhirs. I am talking of them here as they exist in Ostland, what I here you say? Originally constructed by the elves millenia ago to keep the forces of chaos from the old world and help channel the destructive and warping effects of raw magic into a less malevant form helping the high to maintain the menhirs. This one is located on the coast east of Salkalten.

This model stands 380mm tall, is made from expanded pvc and plasticard. I intend to mould and cast it so I can have lots of them on the battle field. This is still a work in progress.
Does this model belong in this plog?
-
Looks awesome bro, gonna do an elaborate base for them all?
Can't wait to see the priest painted as well.
-
any piece of your terrain belongs in this blog! not just the empire stuff!!
-
Cheers guys.
I decided to keep the plynth/base plain so as not to detract from the menhir. Just the circular step to complete and some alternative pinnacles to finish.

Its been a long time since my last post. Lots going on but not much Empire action, i had to deal with a High Elf invasion followed by a beastmen raid. Fortunately my empire survived these hobby wobbles I am back in Ostland.
This is the empire mini I have painted since. This guy is blonde Jamie, the banner bearer for the free company militia of The Bull Inn.
He holds the decree signed by the company to not defile themselves by drinking any inferior ales than those brewed by The Bulls Inn brewmaster. They take their ale very seriously.

Great to see that you are back, your updates are always most welcome! Excellent concept and well executed, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you will do with the rest of the unit! Also, will we get to see the Bull's Inn? Given your last terrain log, I really hope we will...

Thanks folks and Happy New Year.
Yet again I have been hobby wobbling spending time with night goblins, high elves and beastmen!
I have also been busy with work, I start a new job in February.
I received some Empire Ironsides for Christmas and thought it would be great to have a whole battalion of my army with this armour.
Here's some halberdiers and a greatsword.

Those halberdiers are awesome! I've got twenty of these little buggers myself. Very tempted to do a similar conversion.
-
That was a brilliant idea!
-
How creative! I would've never thought of turning them into close combat state troops. The look does fit them though and goes very well with their helmets (which I've always thought looked way to sight-restricting for shooters.

they will get painted, right?

I am impressed, now paint it, and please describe the game table you are going to put it on. steveb
-
I have 120m2 of game space where you're more than welcome to store your stuff... Amazing!

So you're filling all your overhead mantles with these things? That is awesome!
Does all need to be painted, though...

:::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :happy:

Thanks folks, yes they will all be painted - eventually. However I have lots going on at the moment.
One of which is that I am considering entering the UK Armies on Parade. I have an army to finish and a display board to make. :icon_neutral:
I will post progress here.
Does anyone know of any Armies on Parade motivational threads/blogs on the net? I need motivating!

Dave Taylor is a truly inspirational hobbyist. Thanks for posting these. :eusa_clap:
I had a quick count and I have 105 minis for the Armies on Parade.
Non have their bases finished - these will be scratch built to blend into the board.
I have completed painting 51 minis. :-D
54 have just been base coated and washed including 3 double sided banners and 3 wizards.
Oh, and I have to construct a 2'x2' display board. :eusa_wall:
I'm pretty excited about it but I'm a bit daunted by all the work.
I will post minis as I complete them.
I completed this banner bearer recently.
I've been painting minis for 25 years and this was my first attempt at NMM. Not too sure about.

Looks really good bud, I would take him in my ostland army:) This will be interesting to follow, love your work!!

Cheers irishzero. After a brief Wood elf hobby wobble I am back on a mission with the Empire, 10 minis painted since last post.

Your work is fantastic. Unfortunately I can't see how someone who paints to the level you do could ever possibly finish painting all those buildings...

Today I made a tree.
It started life as a hedgehog gutter brush, 4m for £15, that's a lot of trees.
It was cut to size, trimmed to shape, dowel added for trunk with wire inserted for dead branches. This tree stands at 25cm in height. It was spray painted and flock sprinkled on, two coats.
I just have to sculpt the roots and trunk base. I made a few of varying sizes, the tallest being 35 cm without trunk.
The green tree is a shop bought tree. I wanted to make very large trees that looked more realistically scaled.
C&C welcome.
-
nice idea ..im looking for ways to make tree's that are easy and cheap to make :::cheers:::
-
a new religion in the making, the Bishmeisterites worship Bishmeister, for as every one knows, only god can make a tree. Hail Bishmeister! good job, most creative. steveb

Hi Bishmeister,
Your work is wonderful! Can you make some pictures of the mini's without your terrain? So we can see more of the detail of your paintwork :D
Thanks!
-
Getting used to your miniatures and building genius now, but the trees (while also very clever) are an example that ordinary mortals can follow. I'll be passing that on to my scenery-making pal in the morning.
-
Amazing work - one of my favourite blogs. :eusa_clap:
I particularly love your way of painting faces.
-
Sooooooooo much great work, do you have a time warp generator that enables you to find the time? however you manage to do it I remain in awe. steveb

Thank you folks.
Hi Bishmeister,
Your work is wonderful! Can you make some pictures of the mini's without your terrain? So we can see more of the detail of your paintwork :D
Thanks!
I will do, once I build a decent light rig, however this may take some time and is way down on my priority list.
I have been working on this guy recently, the Halberdier's banner bearer. It is in the similar theme to the hand gunner's banner which will hopefully contribute the overall consistency of the army.
If you want to know how the banner was painted follow my twitter account @bishmeister1, I also post regularly there.

Second that, lovely banner indeed.

Wow. Just amazing! I love the banner top. That's a great unique idea! :::cheers:::
-
I went through this thread from the beginning again the other day.
Still can't say WOW enough times.
-
I have to second the sentiment... holy moly! :::cheers:::
-
Thanks folks, ever encouraging as always.
This week I have been mostly making deciuous trees, mostly.
This tree took less than 20 mins to make, 10 mins without the roots on the base.

Really keen on the trees Bish.
I spent most of Salute 2013 looking at the model trees, and most of the pre-made ones we are offered are very unrealistic.
I actually found a gaming demo table with some magnificent ones and then met the professional architectural modeller who made them.
His were done with rubberised horse hair and a cold melt glue gun. I have the products but not the worktop hobby space anymore.
-
These trees are really nice. I'd like to know how you made them. Could you please post a tutorial on W-E as well?
-
OK peeps here's how to make model deciduous trees in minutes.
This shrub is a hydrangea, it is your friend, especially the flower buds in autumn as they are the main component of the tree.
Take the buds, dried out and without petals by now. Add tape, I used paper tape, to the base of the stem, and insert wire through the hollow length of the main stem. Cut a base, I used 3mm expanded PVC 100mm in diameter. Cut root shapes out of 1mm and a length of dowel, sanded and roughed up a bit, I used 10mm 80mm in length and drilled holes in top for wire.
Stick components together, reinforce branch/trunk join with tape and add car body filler around base to create roots, this can be carved when curing for extra detail.
Spray brown and sprinkle with woodland scenics foliage for the leaves and flock for the base. This needs to be swiftly before the paint dries so you may have to do the canopy then the base.
Shake off the excess and apply hairspray to fix in place. From start to finish should take you less than 20 mins per tree, 10 mins if you don't bother with roots and just add lots of bushes around base.
These can probably be made quicker if you are making many in one go. Good luck folks.
-
these look great.
How strong is the hydraenga? The worry is how well it survives on the table top.
-
wow dude you have sold me on a way to make cheap trees :::cheers:::
thanks
-
these look great.
How strong is the hydraenga? The worry is how well it survives on the table top.
You have to reinforce the main stem with wire but the rest is pretty flexible so should be OK on the table top.
I have been painting Greatswords today, 5 done and 5 to go. Probably going to be a while before I finished the rest as I am off to Vienna for a few days, super excited about the architecture!

I've travelled a bit and can safely say that Vienna is the nicest city I have ever been to. It is clean, has wonderful transport links and beautiful architecture. Be sure to go to the arms and armoury museum in the Hofburg Palace - an empire players wet dream I can tell you! If you want to see the Lipizzaner horses then plan it early as it's really sort after!
Can't wait to see what it inspires you to!
Enjoy.

Lovely work! :eusa_clap: Have fun in Vienna!

That's awesome! Enjoy Vienna!

Fantastic trees and Greatswords! Hats off! :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

I had a go at a light wizard. I tried to maintain mostly white on this mini and went for an ivory to fit in with the rest of my army.

dang that is a fine looking wizard! I always love monochrome figures when they are well done and this one fits the bill to a T. steveb

beautiful :::cheers:::

I love this! My light wizard stalled on my failure to do a neutral white. So far I've done ~90 infantry with at least some off-white so it presents no fear to me. You've inspired me to have a second go.

Always inspiring and amazing work! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

lovely work as always, the ivory wizard is very subtle and effective.
what's next?

That's great! What color wash did you use on his robes?

That's great! What color wash did you use on his robes?
No wash, I used a base od rakarth flesh and 'blended' up to pure white.
Thank you for all the fantastic support and encouragement, this is why I love this forum.
And this is why I love The Empire miniature range. Finally made my general, a kitbash of 22 different Empire parts and minimal greenstuffing.

The white coat looks amazing! How did you achieve the 'velvety' effect? You mentioned 22 different parts ... where is the coat from?
-
I believe the coat is from the Outriders kit.
-
Hey there dude,
I've recently been trying to do a similar job with the quartering of the exact banners that you've used for a lot of your standards and I find that I have such a difficult time with the quartering... is there some kind of advice you can give me to help me with cutting the banner into quarters the way you have so successfully?
Also, you seem to get so much done so quickly? I'm trying to speed up my painting time but it doesn't seem possible to me... maybe I'm just slow!
-
Cheers folks.
I believe the coat is from the Outriders kit.
The coat is the outrider captain's, but it has been shortened and the sword arm removed.

Use a ruler and measure the middle on each edge of the banner. Then use masking tape to create the straight line. Pencil along this line and remove tape before painting. The tape will follow any curves. Hope this helps.
I have finally finished my Halberdier regiment, all 24 with a captain. This elevation of the Burgomeister's mansion is now complete.

Hey Bish,
I've just got one quick question if you don't mind answering it.
I started a Reikland army a year or two ago and only recently started getting confident with painting.
My biggest problem is painting 'clean' whites. How did you accomplish that result on your captain?
-
Thank you for the compliment folks.
Hey Bish,
I've just got one quick question if you don't mind answering it.
I started a Reikland army a year or two ago and only recently started getting confident with painting.
My biggest problem is painting 'clean' whites. How did you accomplish that result on your captain?
To paint a clean warm white, the captain's coat for example, I start with Rakarth white, paint agrax earthshade into the deepest creases only using a fine brush. Then mix 50:50 rakarth white with pallid witch flesh, then pallid witch flesh. Then edge highlight with 50:50 pallid witch flesh and white scar. I very rarely use pure white. This can be mostly layered although some areas required wet blending for a smooth transition. Good luck.
I have been painting character models recently and have very much enjoyed the break from rank and file.
I have started using image shack, does anyone know how I can make the images appear larger on the page?

Thanks a bundle for the painting advice! I'll give this a go when I get home
Not sure how helpful you'll find this, but I use imgur for all my pictures, they seem to last a long time & i've never had problems with picture scale.
Thanks again!

Thanks Evil_Penguin918 for the image advice.
Ever since I saw the Demigryph artwork I thought they were awesome.
When the models came out I thought they were cool but I thought that they were a bit on the small side and not quite so fantastical.
So my next project when Warhammer Fest has been and gone and I have finished my entry I will be working on these bad boys.
I am still undecided whether to sculpt big cat front legs, leave them with the bird legs or have a mixture in the unit. These will have rear barding added also.
I will have a unit of six and one with a hero on making a total of seven. These are gonna take some time but I'm pretty excited to be getting back on the modelling vibe again.
-
Hmmm. This will be interesting to watch. I'm not quite sure I'm seeing it just yet. How will they fit on a standard Demigryph Base?
-
:icon_eek: huge!!
-
Great job with the merchant and scribe (and monkey!!)
But the "demi"gryphs... This is madness. ::heretic::
"Madness...? THIS IS OSTLAND!!"
-
wow, the "not so demi"-gryphs are going to be quite something. looking forward to seeing you progress on that project.
...and I like how the monkey is peaking through the shield. he's got the right deer-in-the-headlight expression
-
Wow those Demigryphs will be quite impressive. Must be one of the most expensive Demigryph alternatives out there...

I can not agree more with the previous speakers, this is going to be awesome.
The mere size of that unit of 7 "demis" coming against you and the field will send the opponent fleeing. They are indeed HUGE!
If you are a bit low on cash right now after the 7 of them I can give you a shameful offer on some of your other lovely units
-
Cheers folks, I am pretty excited about this project.
Wow those Demigryphs will be quite impressive. Must be one of the most expensive Demigryph alternatives out there...
I was lucky enough to pick these up cheaper than normal Demigryphs.
Hmmm. This will be interesting to watch. I'm not quite sure I'm seeing it just yet. How will they fit on a standard Demigryph Base?
These just fit on Demigryph bases with a bit of ingenuity.
-
DA-YUM!!!
-
Now that's a crazy idea....i love it.
I think you should have a crack at sculpting the front legs...even if only to get some different poses.

Your thread was the reason I have joined this forum...and you show very impressive that I was not wrong!
Absolutely fantastic army!! Makes me jeallous and very happy to have hollidays to start working on my own army a bit more :)

Really great army, the banners are the real deal. Not so sure about the terracotta Steam Tank though.

That's high praise, thank you. Good luck with your army, I look forward to seeing your army pics.
The terracotta tank is being painted rusty first then I will add some standard Ostland colours for a weather beaten look.

Just caught up on what I've missed over the last couple of months and it's all fabulous.
In particular I like the acolytes robes, the light wizard and all of the banners.
The merchant far outdoes my own attempt also
-
Those demigryphs are gonna be awesome, can't wait to see them modelled up. And the army looks great. The black and white with touches of red looks really effective
-
Your army looks awesome!!
-
Love the banners, I also like how you positioned your state troops, they look like a proffesional army.
-
My god... what an amazing army! So incredible I'm almost speechless. That massive custom Greatswords Banner is just SICK... I mean seriously... who thinks of adding on those extra parts on the sides and achieves it so damn well... SICK !
-
Cheers folks for the kind words and encouragement.
Warhammer fest is fast approaching and I will be entering the Mansion with the army into the open competition. It was intended to be entered into the Armies on Parade category but this no longer exists. So i have removed all the bases and pinned the 125 models of the army. Now I have to attach them to the model.
The drunken gunners in the rear.

Also yesterday I began creating a simple display board to mount the model.

I love this blog- I've been following the army closely on Twitter but it's great to see all the pictures in one place!
Crazy excited to see how those not-so-Demi-gryphs turn out! That might just be THE most EPIC unit I've ever seen!
-
Some sort of epic grand designs warhammer going on :::cheers:::
-
This is going to be made of pure win! :eusa_clap:
-
Thaks for the encouragement folks.
Here's the display board, WIP and almost finished (just need more tufts) pics.

I am happy with the red tiles, they help to make the white stone look whiter. Thie construction of the display board went incredibly smoothly, i had all the pieces in my garage and there were no hitches in it's creation.
Not much time left now for Warhammer Fest.
-
Your blog has been one of my favourites ever since you posted your very first pic. Excellent work! :eusa_clap: Keep us posted!
Have you ever thought about posting tutorials on terrain building? I'd love to read them and learn more about the way you make these awesome buildings.
-
Yeah would love a more in-depth guide to how you did the red stone floors and other things :::cheers:::

Well folks the Burgomeister's Mansion was completed at the weekend. I managed to get some final touches finished for Warhammer Fest Golden Demon 2014. I needed to add a title to the work so I came up with the idea of the Burgomeister sending Nagash a personal message saying, 'Nagash, we are ready, we are Ostland!' In the form of a small scroll sealed with wax.
I think it turned out well. I also like the fact that the Bugomeister with his body guard monkey is standing out front waiting for Nagash.
So here is the finished model just before packing it up for the 160 mile journey to Warhammer Fest.
I had to come up with a way to protect the model fort he journey so I turned it into a space marine drop pod.
Then added some bubble wrap for good measure
(http://i.imgur.com/mGbPx0c.jpg)
I left at 6am, drove for 3 hours and it made the journey without a scratch. I set it up at the venue and viewed the other enties, some outstanding work on show, unbelievable skills.
I entered the open competition as this was the only category I was eligible for. This was a toughy as this was the only category that GW staff could enter.
So the winners were announced at the end of the day and I was amazed to have one a bronze Golden Demon. This is the first time I have entered the Golden Demon and have to say that I am still buzzing from the result and probably will be for a very long time.
This was not only a victory for me but also for the community of this forum. Sure it sounds cheesy but it's true. Without all the encouragement and positivity I really don't think I would have managed to see the entire 5 year project through. I'm lucky to be a member of this forum. Thank you.
-
Congratulations! A more than well deserved 3rd place! Personally I think your project would have deserved not only a golden demon, but also the slayer sword, to honour the time investment, dedication, dimensions and quality of your project! :::cheers:::
-
Congrats :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
well deserved.
-
:eusa_clap: :::cheers::: :eusa_clap:
Wow, the final product is incredible! I am not surprised that you won. I would really like to see what got silver and gold, wow.
-
Truly inspiring work. I can't imagine what piece of scenery possibly could have been better than that. I'm callin bullshit!
-
:icon_eek:
-
The griffon flying round the tower makes it for me. It's just exactly the kind of epic detail you normally only can see in illustration. To see it done physically is pretty amazing.
-
Many congratulations on the result, I'm just gutted I went on the Saturday so was unable to see it up close.
-
Congratulations, Bishmeister! I'm not surprised either. Your work is incredible and you so deserve that award! :eusa_clap:
What are you going to do next?
Whatever your next project is, I'd love to see WIP pics.
-
Congrats man!!!!!! :eusa_clap:You do some amazing work, and that you do Ostland has been one of the major inspiration for my own army. Keep it up and inspire me yo continue my own work as well. :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
And As I said before, if you get tired of some of the guys in the army, just send them to me, my border army could use the extra hands :icon_wink:
-
As soon as I read you'd entered I expected the tale would end in a prize. Thoroughly well-deserved. This project is outstanding; enjoy the glory! :eusa_clap:
-
I bet it was bigger than everything else there by a long way. Congratulations on getting an award. Should be Gold though!
Warhammer Visions would be worth getting to see this featured.
-
Gold and silver must be astonishing. Congratulations on having your work recognised, it really is the finest work this forum has ever seen.
-
I am truly impressed. The acknowledgement of your peers gives a validation to everything you have achieved. without a doubt you are a skilled master craftsman, not just a painter, or a builder/converter, but the whole package wrapped up in one. Well desrved congratulations. steveb
-
Congrats! Well deserved! Your attention to detail is beyond anything else that I've seen! You get Gold in my book! :::cheers:::
-
It's hard to imagine anything beating it Bish. Congratulations,
I suppose we might be slightly biased here as the subject is empire releated though.
-
The bigger, the better! Congrats! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
Awesome work mate.
I can't wait to see what is next!
-
Well done, well deserved.
Can't help thinking that sheer size and audacity counted against you for silver or gold, you wonder if judges start looking for flaws a bit harder when they see an "obvious" contender!
I don't know that we can claim much credit, but I'm sure we're all very pleased for you and proud of you! :eusa_clap:
-
It's an amazing piece.
Congratulation on your well earned price.
-
Simply incredible and well deserved :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
... now top it!!!
-
Congratulations! You really deserve it. Can't wait to see your stuff in a white dwarf. You've done the community proud. :biggriin:
-
Stunning.
Its great to see all your hardwork get acknowledged.....and deservingly so.
-
Great job! Could you please post some 100 more pics of the entry - I think I could look it forever... :::cheers:::
-
Any idea where we might see photos of the other entries?
This thread shows some amazing work, and if other entries are on the same level I'd love to see them!
-
What Lateksimajava und Grendel083 said. :-D
And I'd still love to see tutorials on this forum to learn from your terrain building skills.
-
So very well deserved!!
Congratulations. That is truly a stunning piece. I don't think I had realized how big it was until I saw the photos of you packing it. Wow!!!
Hats off to you!

Such kind words from you all, thank you so much. This is why this is the best Warhammer forum on the internet for me.
I am more than happy to pass on my skills in some part of this forum. In the workshop would be the best place but it would good to get it 'stickied' so it was always visible. I will be working on more terrain in the future and I would like to share the techniques used with you all. If anyone on this forum knows who to organise this with please PM me.
I have been doing so much painting recently that I have an itch to do some more modelling. So it's back to the demigryph alternatives.
Armature for the legs complete. The measurements were taken from the smaller demigryph model, the larger demigryph is 1.5 times larger.
Next is blocking out the limbs with green stuff and starting to sculpt muscle and details. Lots more work to go yet, it's been a long time since I have used green stuff on this scale.
This will be the test demigryph to see how I get on. If I get the painting itch again soon I will be painting artillery.
-
Great to see those armature pics, I think it's really important for people to see that this sort of work is "just" wire and greenstuff (and talent and practice of course!) at the end of the day. Hopefully that will encourage others to take the plunge from bits bashing to the next step. My own "sculpting" level has reached the level of connecting bits with wire and then filling in the gaps, every WIP I see helps me along a bit, so thanks.
-
To echo Shadespyre, the process pics are very valuable. They provide great inspiration and hints, even in those who are bold (foolish?) to try major efforts like this. I can't wait to see the final result.
Good luck!
-
Cheers guys.
I'm currently taking a break from the Empire at the moment.
I have been making some resin forest bases for my Forest Night Goblins , Beastmen and Wood Elf armies.
They took a fair amount of work but now all I have to do is cast and paint them. I wanted to have a fairly dense looking dead forest in the regiments.
And model eye view.
-
Wow, those bases are stunning. The leg work on that griffon is spot on, can't wait to see more.
-
Oh, wow! C'mon, how'd you do those trees? They look amazing! Right down to the leaves on the ground. Is that ground cover tea leaves? I heard that makes good forest ground cover.
-
Slow down Bish - I'm still trying to make greenery from that tip you gave last year on the plastic shrub decorative balls. :engel:
Can you cast those bases in one piece with that depth of tree stump?
I was looking at what Weib had done in her resin casting thread and most of her stuff looked quite flat/thin.
-
:eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
These bases are great! :eusa_clap:
Do you have WIP pics? Which materials do you use for casting?
-
Fantastic! Can't wait to see how you pose the goblins on them!
-
Cheers folks.
Oh, wow! C'mon, how'd you do those trees? They look amazing! Right down to the leaves on the ground. Is that ground cover tea leaves? I heard that makes good forest ground cover.
The leaves are maples leaves from my garden, dried out, crushed by rubbing my hands together with the leaves into a sieve (sieve has 2mm gaps). The bits are then collected in a tub and used like flock. For the best effect collect as many different coloured leaves. Very cheap, quick and very effective.

These are cast in one piece, you just have to avoid the undercuts.
These bases are great! :eusa_clap:

I use fast cast polyurethane resin, not very friendly to humans and must be used in a well ventilated room or outside. It also vents off for a few days after.
The trees are real twigs with blue tac, I had no green stuff, to make the base of the trunks taper. Real stones used for rocks, all fungi has been sculpted on using green stuff and then the bases embellished with skulls, leaves etc.

Congrats!!!
-
Impressive use of real wood! Totally going to try some of that out. I think that's one of the most useful wip photos I've ever seen. :::cheers:::
But seriously, night goblins? It's going to take about 20 years just to make bases to them :D
-
Awesome! I've never even thought about doing the crushed leaf thing! Duh! Seems so simple... Well this is a good time of year to do it!
The goblins look awesome! Just how many are you going to do like that? :icon_twisted:
-
Excellent work, Bish! :eusa_clap: Thank you for the WIP pics.
-
Cheers folks.
The army will tale a while as I have approximately 400 goblins. All of them will have these style bases, I will be making unit filler bases.
I came across this on the internet, great looking plastic Empire style troops on indiegogo

Loving the style on those gobbos, will be a sight to have a 400 strong army staring you down.
-
Everyone is already hella-jacked about the Pro-Gloria crowdfunding! :)
-
Everything you do is gold, these gobbos being no exception. I love the bases!
Also: Us needs those Landsknechts! They are so beautiful! Is pro-gloria on scale with GW, or are they more like perry? I've never seen any of their models IRL... No that it really matters, I need a spear horde of those!
-
This is one of the gems of W-E. Lovely army, and *grumble grumble* lovely Grobi. Would love to put my axe into those.
Also: Us needs those Landsknechts! They are so beautiful! Is pro-gloria on scale with GW, or are they more like perry? I've never seen any of their models IRL... No that it really matters, I need a spear horde of those!
They're more on scale with GW (6th) then the historic competitors. Also heroic proportions.
-
Brilliant, most of my stuff is 6th anyways! Will have to sign up tomorrow...
-
There has been much discussion, and input from Pro Gloria, in the Counts Tavern - Other Manufacturers thread.
Individual photos and greens, and size comparisons.
-
Bishmeister, can I just say I am completely in awe of your work! I've been lurking here for a while now, and I just can't fathom how someone can be so good at painting both miniatures and terrain! My miniatures are fairly average, but my buildings always look awful. I just can't paint anything with a large surface area. Anyway, keep up the amazing work, you're inspiring me to paint!
Gotta get me some of those Pro-Gloria guys too... to add to my pile of unpainted plastic!
-
Thanks for the positivity folks.

I'm closer to that goal now. Just to note, your night goblin army has been one of the armies that inspired me to revisit my night goblins, so thank you for the inspiration.
I will be starting a new blog on this forum, it will be called Bishmeister's Night Goblins, hope this is OK being an Empire forum. I will be revisiting my Ostland army from time to time also.
I have managed to finish a unit of 20 blue squig herders, i intend to have two units of fifty.

I took a trip to Warhammer World at the weekend to install the Burgomeister's Mansion in the Golden Demon Winners section of the exhibition hall. It was a great day, meeting all the other winners, some of the 'Eavy Metal team and the guys that created all the amazing displays in the exhibition. It's well worth a visit if you get the chance. I also had the chance to discuss my entry with John Blanche, he's such a gentleman.
Here's a pic of my entry on the GW website advertising the exhibition.

I'm very proud to be a part of this event.
Thank you all for all the support and encouragement I recieved from this forums members during this project that never seemed to end.

You do the empire and this forum proud, thank you for raising the bar of excellence. steveb

Now that would be a reason to visit! How long will it be displayed for?

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
The model will be at Warhammer World until the beginning of September.
The model and I were both at Salute, not sure how you missed it Midaski, it's quite big.
I'm currently still working away on my Night Goblin Army commitment, however I picked up a copy of the latest White Dwarf and it had a free model stuck to it. I could not believe the scale of the model, this thing stands head and shoulders above Empire minis, so I just had to butcher it and make it into an Empire model, albeit a rather large one.
I went for an imposing Karl Franz Ascendent.
And with some base coats and washes completed.
I went for a different colour scheme as KF is now a changed man/demigod. I chose the colours to link in with my Ostland army, white = the light, black = the dark and red = the blood of men that separates the good and evil of the world. I will be trying to achieve a bone/ivory white armour effect. You'll notice similarities with my Empire General composition with this model in the use of the cherub and a small pet at his feet, I love incorporating these into models.
Whilst the scale is large I think it works well for a single imposing model and I think it does the reborn Karl Franz justice. I am also sticking with square bases.
Let me know what you think as I also appreciated opinions and advice.
-
Looking good - but needs a bigger hammer!
-
Your army truly is exceptional!
And while I stand by my opinion that the Stormcast Eternals are ugly models, your Karl Franz turns it into a truly beautiful conversion.
Also, demigryphs! Look forward to seeing them finished.
Inspirational stuff, thanks for sharing. :smile2:
-
I was at WW at the weekend and saw your diorama Bishmeister, even better 'in the flesh'! I think your pictures undersell it if such a thing is possible. My friend was blown away by the quality :::cheers:::

I am currently in the process of moving house so I have been dusting and packing all my models, quite a cathartic experience.
I have had many trips up the loft and couldn't resist setting up my 'toy castle', I must get back on this project in the new year.

I have a theory that Bish's work made GW go "Okay, we can't ever hope to produce anything this good. Let's pull the plug."

No amount of exclamation marks would be enough!!!!!!!!!!
PS. Thread title says "Possibly" King of the Empire Castles. Possibly? Like there is any doubt?

That castle is crazy! So awesome, love the Karl Franz Ascended. The Stormcast Eternals with Empire bits looks really nice.

Wholy crap! :icon_eek:
That is some serious work there!
Only thing I wouldn't have done myself is put all the troops stuck on it, though it gives a way better look to it

Stunning... Just absolutely stunning...

"Sound of jaw dropping through the floor" :icon_eek: :eusa_clap:

That is incredible. Amazing work.

awesome job, how long was it on display at GW?, if this were a graded class project you would have just seriously messed up the grading curve. steveb
-
This is an amazing piece. Great work all around. :eusa_clap:
What's really great about this (besides all of the work you put into it), is that it fits so perfectly into the Warhammer world, and is a testament to the rich environment that GW created over 30 years of novels, army books and background.
An easily identifiable and brilliant work of art. Beautiful.
-
HOLY SHI-!! :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek:
It's so beautiful, I seriously have tears in my eyes from that work of art.
You deserve some kind of reward for that marvel but I have no idea what could compare to just owning that. Beyond amazing work! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

I keep coming back and looking at the pictures like this :icon_eek:
This is Warhammer. This is the Empire.
Like Eric Roof said, it just embodies the spirit of the old world, the grim, fantastical, dark and magical land we've all lost ourselves in.
The land where all a man has to defend himself against ravaging beastmen, ferocious Orcs, and villainous ratmen is a halberd and some god-damned puff and slash.
I love this model.
-
See - as long as there is stuff like this around The Empire will live on
Bish - The previous pics were amazing - these go beyond that.
I assume you have this safely back in your domain, and it's not at GW anymore?
-
Thanks folks, amazing support as always, much appreciated.

This model is now residing on my windowsill, if you are in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England you are welcome to come and view it.

You guys have hit the nail on the head, with this model I was trying to epitomise the Warhammer World and the Empire of Man.

It was displayed in Warhammer World as part of the Golden Demon 2014 Winners Exhibition for about 6 weeks.

This was not my original plan as it was intended to be an Armies on Parade entry but GW scrapped Armies on Parade as part of the Golden Demon so I removed the bases, pinned them all and stuck them on model. This is my Empire army and will be removed from the model and rebased on rounds.
Thanks again everyone for all the fantastic feedback.
And now for some more pictures, some close-ups of the faces and banners.
Enjoy.
