Helmut Feuerbach's little trip
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:15:45 PM »
Hello everyone,

this is my Talabecland army blog. The general idea is that Helmut Feuerbach (the missing Elector Count) goes astray in the Great Forest with a small expeditionary force, picking up bands of flagellants as he fights the terrible monsters within. Struggling to survive, Feuerbach and his men feed on mushrooms, making them exceptionally brave but also rather silly.

And now for something completely different...the first update! Allow me to introduce Peter Pilzenkopf, celebrated mushroom connoisseur and master of self-flagellation!

Hello again! It's time for a little update. Ladies and gentlemen, this is my first pirate halberdier!

I've decided to keep things simple, and not to deal with washes or highlights just yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish the whole unit before I change my colour scheme or something. Any feedback on this new style would be appreciated!

I can understand if the appearance of a pirate halberdier raises a fluffy eyebrow or two, seeing as our protagonist is supposed to wander the Great Forest. These pirates are, however, far from their natural habitat. They used to terrorise merchants traficking River Stir, until the River Patrol struck down upon them, sinking their barge. The survivors scrambled into the Great Forest, and now they're lost, just like Helmut and his expeditionary force. Naturally, when they were shown the contents of the Elector Count's coffers, they were more than willing to join his little adventure.

I would wash him. Right now it looks flat and the flagellant looks washed, so washing him would make the army appear more uniform.

I'm definitely going to wash him, but not yet. There's a whole unit to paint! By the way, here's another one.

Alright, here's a litte fellow who will go into my handgunner unit.  I based him with glade grass first, but had to scrape it off because it looked so very ugly. What do you people think I should use instead? Maybe some sort of railroad foilage?

I like your painting style. It is very clean with good highlights. My only suggestion would be to add some deeper shadows or dark tones using inks or washes. It could just be the photography but it seems that the recesses in the model are the same tone as the mid tone areas. Also I like the work you have done on the bases. Maybe for the powder chimp you could add some earth tones around the base of the rocks or lichen on the stones? Keep it up :::cheers:::

Thank you Haak, I see what you mean about the shadows. My phone flash has a way of lighting up the recesses, so that's probably a contributing factor. It wouldn't hurt to have deeper shadows though! Concerning the bases, I'm pretty sure they need more earth colours. Maybe it would be a good idea to add some moss and some roots to go with the mushrooms. And Steveb, this monkey hasn't seen a banana for years! If he did find one he wouldn't leave the delicious peel lying around. :icon_razz:

I'm glad you like it! It's part of my Christmas build-up, which admittedly begins somewhere in September. :icon_mrgreen: If you're interested, I've got some very special hats in the pipeline.
