« on: August 06, 2013, 04:44:24 AM »
Here is a log of what was just going to be a model for a D&D game and is turning into a mounted army of halflings.  I have used many of the moot armies as inspiration, so I thought i would post up my progress here.

Tyromancer:  One who divinates by cheese.  Be it by coagulation, the holes or mold that develops, how rodents choose to eat bits, or other methods of reading cheese to find out the future.  My friend (also my current 3.5 DM) brought this up as an interesting word he came across while going down a wiki rabbit hole.  I instantly had the of a halfling cleric or paladin that would use cheese to cast augury or divination.  He would ride a goat into battle as it can keep up with the medium sized pcs and can go into the dungeon without having the same kind of terrain issues a pony would have and has a spine that can keep carrying a creature unlike a dog.  Plus there is the added bonus of goats producing cheese.

So I started working up the character as a back up.  I used to play High Elves and Wood Elves back in High School and have dabbled with modelling for the last 12-15 years.  In the last few years I started collecting bits to make figurines to make characters and soldiers for my Fallout PNP game.  Using these I thought about starting an IG army.  This army was loosely based on the idea of the Akali (Sikh soldiers of the 17-1800's) and I started gathering Empire bits to gain unique looking torsos and arms with swords.  I got bored of this and  moved to making characters in our D&D game.  In the midst of that, I also picked up what's been referred to as the 'dark arts', that is casting resin.  So with that in mind, I started to make the figurine for the halfling cleric/paladin on a goat.

Basic Body and leg structures.  I used a beastman head as I had it in my bits box.

Halfling Body and more greenstuff on the goat:

Head w/ helmet:

I decided I didn't want to use the head from the beastman as it looked to human. So, I ventured to make my own:

I realized that I really liked the model and decided to make a mold of the goat and cleric.

I am missing some progression pics, but this is the mostly formed cleric and partially barded goat.  By this point I was trying for a cataphract, maybe Byzantine or Parthian in influence.  Eventually the Scythians and other steppe peoples would be my influence on style and back story, but I'll get to that later.

Fully barded goat:

Completed figure:

I painted up the full model in the fashion of the Wayward Wardens of Yondalla in D&D.

At this point, I began entertaining thoughts of a whole unit of them.  So i began cutting up the original greens to be able to cast in multiple poses.

My plan is to make a whole army of halflings based on the hordes of the steppes.  In D&D, halflings are semi-nomadic and I wanted to run with the idea of a group of them that follows a massive herd of goats, like the Mongol or Suomi peoples and their respective herd animals.  The model featured is my heavy cavalry and there will also be dismounted versions.  The problem is that I don't know if I will take it on the field as a WHFB army as some have like bas_2312,    Steve D, or der Hurenwiebel (my apologies to others who are as well that I didn't list).  I had thought of something akin to the Kislev armies or maybe Bretonians (due to high cavalry model counts).  I've always liked the Empire though and always kind of coveted my friends who fielded their guns and canons vs my White Lions and repeater bolt throwers.

Any ideas on that front would help.

Up next:  Expanding the forces.

So I completed that model back in May and since then have been working towards creating a uniform look to the heavy cavalry.  The way the forces are working out in my head, I have those counting as knights with mounted archers being something akin to Pistoleers or Outriders.  Then the dismountled lancers/spearman would have to be state troops.

From the one model, I made frames for the next set of figures and mocked up a new pose for the weapon arm.  The shields are based on the Yondalla shield from D&D.  The diamond-ish shaped shield will be for the infantry and the crescent shape for the cavalry.

I don't have any picks of the infantry greens other than the initial stage, but I put together a test model from casted bits:

Painted Up:

And some shots for scale:

I also started on the champion of the knights:

I've worked on making up versions of the spearman so that there is some variety in the unit and have been casting more up.

Up to 16 done, 9 more to work on:

I've also worked up some of the heavy cav:

So for the totals, I was thinking of making up the following that would give me options for an army list:

40 spearman (state troops) w/ champion, BS and musician

30 Heavy Weapons (like Great Swords or Halberds) w/ champion, BS and musician

20 Archers w/ champion, BS and musician

10 mounted archers (Pisotoleers) w/ champion, BS and musician

10 Heavy Cav (IC or KO) w/ champion, BS and musician

1 Lord

For the artillery, I am thinking a great cannon modeled after a Korean/Chinese design they obtained from the dutch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hongyi-po
or the Hwacha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hwacha) which is similar to the Helstorm Rocket battery or Helblaster, though the rockets make more sense.

For Demigryph cav, I am thinking of making Bison with one halfling handling the reins and another with the halberd (think elephant riders).  The bison would keep with the plains/steppe motif, though I have been considering elk or or dire elk.

I've also been mulling over designing a steam tank based off of the large wagon in this pick: http://medieval2.heavengames.com/m2tw/history/historical_battles_folder/sack_kiev/mongols12.jpg

It kind of reminds me of Da Vinci's Tank http://www.leonardodavincisinventions.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/leonardo-da-vincis-tank-invention1.jpg

Really like this army - some wonderful ideas, very well executed. The concept of the Halflings as a nomadic steppe people is fantastic. I think you should also think about looking at some of the Persian concepts for the more civilized / elite regiments. I am thinking of the Bactrian horsemen Alexander fought against.

Thanks, I hope to include as much as I can from the steppes and Near East.  I started working up some Greatswords using some of the extra spearman bodies I hadn't assembled yet.  I plan on making them a mix of halfling types, unlike the heavy cav and dismounted lancers/spearman who are all of the Tallfellow variety.   I have 2 stout bodies mocked up for the horse archers (counts as outriders/pistoleers).

Here are the great swords using the Ram Dao, a sword from Northern India and Nepal:

The Heavy Cav is being delayed a bit still, but I've been armor on the running goat model while working on the greatswords.

I also have one mounted archer body finished.  I tried sculpting the bow from sheet plastic, but the curves cause the bow to crack in half under shaving.

The rest of my free time this weekend was spent on the greatswords.  I am debating whether to keep using the same bodies as the spearman or to just leave them the same.  I at the very least, i will be adding more detail to their boots and a metal circle of armor at the center of their chest.

Here are the first two models I mocked up with the arm armor:

I then moved on to the others and began adding unique heads:

I mentioned earlier that I will be incorporating more than just the Tallfellow type halfling that D&D 3.5 has as their main halfling.  The Stout and Hairfoot (both more like the WHFB style halfling than the tall and thin ones i've made up until now) will be mixed in where possible.  I am taking my old green for the spearman and lopped off his legs below where the knee would be.  I then took green stuff and added where the new knee would be:

A note on the bare heads of the swordsman.  In D&D, the Tallfellows have naturally curly hair that they wrap around a long blade of grass, or in this case, likely a stem from the grass on the steppes.  The effect in the art reminds me of corn rows, so i emulated that here.

Here is the source images (combined into one file) i have been using to sculpt:

For size comparrisons, Tolkien-esque Hobbits:

Continuing to try and fill out the ranks of the greatswords, I started on the stouts and hairfoot bodies hoping to make them a part of the full horde.  However, I got distracted by archers and by the time I came back to the greatswords, I decided to cast the models I had made instead of finishing them.

Hairfoot and Stout bodies:

Making the drop mold:

I was being a bit cheap on this and overloaded the mold.  In addition, once I coated the models in a thin layer of silicone, i added a bunch of chopped up silicone from a mold that had since broken down.  It turned out that either the first layer was too thin or the old silicone bits had too much air between each part when it hardened, because the results on a few of the resin cast were Fringe like monstrosities.
<a href="http://s1253.photobucket.com/user/QuintDeagle/media/Tyromancers%20Horde/20130902_185208.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh587/QuintDeagle/Tyromancers%20Horde/20130902_185208.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20130902_185208.jpg"/></a>

I was able to come up with a few decent casts, though out of 5 models cast (and 6 heads) this is all I had left:

4 greatswords were viable:

Out of silicone and bored with the archers, I decided to play around with the idea of outriders in an army like this.  I am a huge fan of Rome: Total War and the expansion, Barbarian Invasion.  In the Eastern Roman Empire, you can recruit Carriage Ballistae.  These are chariots with Scorpions on the back with one driver and one person to man the ballista.

I thought it would be fun to recreate something like this but keep it with one mount.  I would have the repeater handgun operated by a gnome (typically more tech savvy than halflings) and the carriage would be driven by either a halfling.  Here is a mocked up model:

The pole that the repeater will be mounted on will be lower as there is clay holding it up.  The firing mechanism will be a crank like the early repeating Gatling guns.

I will be painting up the 4 swordsmen over the week as the white doesn't show off a lot.

I forgot I had these and found them when rummaging through a box from a few moves ago:

I had bought them a some knights back in 02 or 03 when trying to get back in the hobby.  The black guard were for a friend who used to crush my wood elves with his corsairs. Pricing on the grandmaster is $6.99, GS $9.00, and black guard command $9.99.

I was thinking of maybe including the actual greatswords in the unit so a to maintain a true line of sight for any opponents.

Anyways, models are primed time to paint.

I got some paint down on some models to try and show what they will be like.  This is also my first time getting static grass to look somewhat decent.  I tried to avoid it up until recently, but thought that the dried plains look was what this army should have.

Greatswords

Spearmen / Dismounted Lancers

Heavy Cav

A happy looking goat

With some models finally painted, I am going back to working on the outrider carts, hopefully getting the light cav (counts as pistoleers) done, continue making various halflings and gnomes, and mocking up a cannon, tank, and some kind of wagon for the Tyromancer.

I haven't made much progress on the halflings since my gaming group has decided to pick up Mordheim.  I've been working on terrain since then.  I was able to get some progress done on the cart:

Considering that we are approaching the Christmas season and store after store is selling snow laden trees and buildings, I thought it would be best to do up my Mordheim board in a winter theme.  Here is what i have so far:

I've been going with simple terrain stuff first, just LOS blocking stuff.  The tower will be fun once I get that finished as it is easily the tallest piece i have.  The board is just pink foam from Home Depot that has been scratched to make it look like cobble stone.  I was eager to try my hand at snow and used baking soda, white paint, water, and PVA.

I've used a Halfling list off of the Mordheimer site and so far I've lucked out on scenarios and they are 2-0.  My Shadow Warrior and Reikland lists haven't been so lucky....

I've worked a bit more on the gnomes to add some variety to the outrider carts:

I have also been focusing on the hairfeet, mostly because they make up a large portion of my Mordheim list:

I didn't have a body for my village orge, but I had plenty of heads and arms in my bits box.  So I decided to make one.  He's inspired my Mongolian Wrestlers:

In addition, I am making a Dwarven Treasure Hunters list using the bits bin:

In Forgotten Realms, there is a type of Halfling that rides owls, so inspired by that, I made up a Dire Owl to replace the griffin:

There is still a lot of greenstuff to apply to make it more in line with the 'dire' versions from D&D.

And I am working on a statue of Shallya or Yondalla, depending on the setting  :-)  :

Both the owl and statue are from Safari, I believe.  I got them at Michael's.

My my, it appears I haven't posted to this one for a bit.  I haven't devoted as much time to the Horde as I likely should, but the 3 elves have been taking up my hobby time.  I blame Mordheim for reopening that door.

I have started the Luminark.  At the same time, I have decided to add more gnomes into the mix.  Based on the D&D roles, Halfling wizards aren't a common occurrence, so, those roles will be filled with gnomes.  So the Luminark will have a gnomish wizardess from Reaper atop it.  Lacking horses in the army, I decided to go with a howdah atop a mammoth.  I picked up a Christmas ornament a while back for project use and it will work out perfectly on a chariot base:

Also, aside from the elves, which I won't include here, I've been working on my 'dynamic' dwarves that originally started out as a Dwarven Treasure Hunters list for Mordheim.  I picked up a few bits for the new Gyrocopter/Gyrobomber kit from Ebay just to play around with.  I don't think I want to start another army, but I just wanted to see what i could do with it.  The current Gyrobomber has a lot for the pilot to do.  Fly the darn this, strafe with the clatter gun, bomb, etc.  Most modern helicopters have 2 people to handle all that, so i decided to make the kit more like a Hind/Cobra/Apache.  I altered the front seat and glued them together with the gunner slightly below the pilot:

(not the heads i used later)

I then expanded the engine area so that now it is a 4 cylinder instead of 2.  More power to handle the increased weight.

I then started on the front cabin adding plastic card scoured to look like wood (thought that isn't clear in the shots).  Like model airplanes, i painted the interior parts first since they would be a pain later.:

I am debating whether to have the front covered in metal, or to keep with the wood exterior.   I am definitely going twin rotor like the Chinook.  I will be using 2 of the large rotors.

Thanks  :icon_biggrin:

I've been looking around at other gyrobombers and most tend to keep their basic shape or go for a boat style airship. I'm trying to keep it in the spirit of the dwarves and fantasy, but that being said, the front is basically the same layout as a modern attack helicopter.

Anywho, onto the progress:

http://s1253.photobucket.com/user/QuintDeagle/media/The%20Dynamic%20Dwarves/20140522_231143.jpg.html

After inhaling the tamiya putty fumes, it was time to make it more dwarven.  Inspiration taken from the bolt thrower:

held together (loosely) by clay:

Front end is a bit heavy looking with so much lift being generated at the back end.  I am considering adding the propulsion screw upright at the front to provide much needed balancing lift.

It does appear a tad nose heavy, but maybe just tilting nose down when you base it may actually be enough. It would look like an attack helicoptor coming at you.

Thanks guys.

I think I have addressed the nose being too heavy.  Unfortunately, it meant adding more too it, but I think it worked out.

Here is the cockpit with decorating complete:

Pick of the size difference on the original vs the modified engine:

Now on the the big change.  I had an extra rear tail with the stabilizer rotor.  I have put in on the nose to add 2 additional rotors for lifting the front.  I like the result as it makes it seem like the Dwarven version of a monsterous creature.

Next up: Finally painting it, more work on the Pistoleers (Shirt bow goat riders), and foot archers.
