Captasus vs pistoliers
« on: November 18, 2013, 06:28:37 PM »
Basic straight up question, 2400 point list.

Pistoliers + muso and a boss just over 100 and same for the captasus

I've used pistoliers before but never a captasus.

One thing i've considered is that fact that the cap will not add a drop mto my list

thoughts?

What do you plan to use them for? I personally like the captasus with speculum and warriors bane to take out broken pieces of dog crap like the DP.

Pistoliers are great for warmachine hunting and chaff clearing (I've found then better in combat than shooting vs weak troops)
It's not the size of the Herdstone it's how you use it

I vote Captasus.

You can equip him in so many ways, and he can be immensely helpful in every game.

Don't get me wrong, I love Pistoliers too. I just think a Captasus is the better option more often than not. He can do everything Pistoliers can do and then some.

No, I'm sending it to people I reckon I can trust. Or, at least, people I think I can murder should it become neccesary.

My warmachine hunting/chaff group:

Captasus  = Full Plate, Shield, Lance

5 Pistoliers + Musician

5 Knightly orders + Musician

I run 2 squads of these guys in my 2500 point army.   I don't run steam tanks, and I run only a single unit of 4 Demigriffons.  These squads backed up by 2 cannons survived the worst gunlines imaginable then follow up to speedbump, harrass and hunt down weak units and mages.   They give me precious board contol I can't maintain with steam tanks, or wide units of demigriffons.   Only complaint is the pistoliers are so completely overpriced for their performance,  they can't shoot for shit, and they're just as lousy in cc.   Most of the time their role is served when my opponent dumps 20 shots into them instead of my other units.

thanks

I'm running @2400 (very roughly)

Walter
lvl4 light
bsb
WP mounted

10 archers
40 halberds
9 IC knights

3 DGK
30 Greatswords
Cannon

Then i need to chose from a combination of (about 380 points remaining)

5 pistoliers + muso
Capatus basic gear
another cannon
5 reiksgaurd or nilla knights

I can get 3/4 of the above in my list but i don't know what to choose

Have you considered a unit of outriders with a pistol champ?

In theory the weapons don't work that well together but I find I use the outriders better when I don't feel so tied down to move or fire.

how many shots would that give the unit on the move?
they're more like good handgunners rather than a mobile unit?

Four shots hitting on 3s at short range when moving.

I'd vote for a Captasus.

Actually, with that many points, I'd vote for two :)

They're faster than pistoliers and outriders, and just as flexible, movement-wise.

They're FAR more durable. 3 wounds with 1+ AS (use enchanted shield or something cheap. the 1+ is worth it).

I'd also suggest that you try your list both ways, if games are easy to come by in your meta. There's nothing to replace play-testing a list. Maybe you'll be particularly good with pistoliers... who knows?

My experience says that the Captasus is just much more flexible and useful.

I forgot to give credit to Sammay.  I did the multiple captasus experiment and it has worked so well for me it's my standard list at the moment.   Im still hard pressed to tool them up because they're prime targets for war machines, magic, etc.  I snicker when my opponents waste so many resources to kill them.

i've chosen @ 2000 and 2400 to take both a captasus (lance, 1+, luckstone and maybe TOTS) and 5 pistoliers with a muso, opting to drop nilla or reiksgaurd knights

I'd keep the nilla knights and take a captasus.  You lose fast cav mobility, vanguard and lousy shooting 2-3 shots hit out of 10, but you gain superior armor, a good 5 str punch in the charge and sticking power.

In my 2000-2500 lists I use both.

5 pistoliers with musician, 100pts, and
Captasus, FPA, Shield, Lance, Dragonhelm, 130 pts.

A lot of the shooting/magic missiles at the captasus is flaming, thus Dragonhelm.

There are 3 units I never, ever, leave home without, even at 500pts: the Captasus (drop Dragonhelm at 500 points), pistoliers, and my huntsmen. All are ultra maneuverable and give the initiative to the Empire player.

Sorry for being out of subject, but which model do people use for the captasus? GW doesn't have a model for Empire captain on pegasus (not that I can find anyway) and the Bret is, well, not very Empire-look-a-like.

I have a metal pegasus I bought several years ago, but a knight model will not fit on it and not any other model I have either.

This is a running joke that lots( me included) have been entrapped by..

Most people use the Bretonnian Peg Knight. There is a peg you can by on it's own from GW. Or you can buy wings from the bits  section and convert a horse...

Bretonnian Pegasus, plus judicious use of an exacto knife to erase the Bretonnian markings and mail:

Has anyone suggested the Breton...no, no I can't do it.

I substituted the head and neck of the Empire General's horse to make it feel more Imperial.
