It used to be something about their lack of psychic abilities. They didn't register Chaos as they didn't register anything from the warp.

It's the same reason they can't use warp travel.

They're trying to go around that limitation by nicking imperial warp tech and reverse engineering it. Still won't solve the Navigator and Astropath problems, as they don't have any.

Sounds like they are due a Tau version of the film 'event horizon' in that case!

Probably. Baring Farsight and the Ethereal caste, the Tau don't know anything about the Warp and its denizens. Humanity also had to go through that fase during the Dark Age of Technology. "Event Horizon" could very well be the first ever contact between mankind and the Warp. Many fans like to bring that up in discussions about 40K.

Tau don't register in the warp because they don't have souls.  The warp is the realm of souls and is affected by soul bearing races.

They have souls, but they are very dim, almost non-existant. Tau are not a race of blanks. In fact Aun'va was killed by the Culexus Assassin, who also managed to take out a whole room of Firewarrios with his untouchable aura.

hmm Theory....is it due to the small population of Tau throughout history?  Eldar owned the universe for a bit which is why they are masters at it.  Humans took over the galaxy and that's when psykers started showing up (pre-emperor dark ages of technology).  Tau have just showed up on the intergalactic stage and so not enough souls in the realm of souls to manifest and make tau psykers.

just a theory

The Tau are 5000 years old, they are a very young race. The Eldar were created as a very strong, psychic race also very long lived and with heightened senses. Humans are also a psychically powerful species, just longer in the making. If everything would work as intended, the whole of humanity would in time become as strong as the Emperor in the field of psychic might. That was his plan initially. Also some of the Inquisitors, mainly from Ordo Hereticus, know this and try to make it happen by keeping humanity going on, despite everything that galaxy's and the Four are throwing at them.
