Wissenlander's Grey Wissenlanders! COMPLETED on 2/10/2010
« on: June 16, 2009, 11:45:59 PM »
All,

Some of you may remember ye olde thread, "Those grey Wissenlanders....", by Warhammerlord_Soth. It was a remarkable event, whereupon many forum members spontaneously decided to paint Wissenlander's units while their own armies languished in grey plastic.

( Link to old topic...: )
http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=22305.0

As I felt kind of silly reviving an ancient thread, I decided to simply start a new one. I've previously painted his General and a Sigmarite Priest.
As several of his regiments were still unpainted, Wiss brought me in on the project to finish up the last of 'em. I brought over my rigorous* painting ethic from my own armies, and thus, months later... ten spearmen are done.

I forgot Wiss's name for the regiment, but I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be its commander - the one in the plaid dress. Anyway, I call them the Laughing Lions and frequenters of my own little bit of property in Brennenburg, the Laughing Lion Inn - named after a pub my Dad used to frequent long before I was born.

(This isn't official Wiss canon, and I don't really care - I just made it up to amuse myself while I was painting.)

The colors are simple tabletop quality - base, highlight, and wash. Those new-ish GW washes are such freakin' lifesavers. They really are the finishing touch that my painting style never had.

So. Ten spearmen. Of a 36-man-regiment. One of three regiments I'm supposed to be painting. Oh boy.

I'll be around with more pictures when I've painted them :P

Cheers,
- Zandur

Nice job Zander  8-).

If you can just get the other 26 done by end of July it'll be right in time for the bash  :-P.

I love the champion's kiltish thing.

Maybe, if there are still more to be painted, I can yoink some more at the bash...

I've got everything whats left already here at my place - I should have this in hand :)

Hm, thats when the bash is? There's still a bash? I'm confused... anyway, I'll try.

Its no wonder you Empire lads get knocked about - you go to war with pointy sticks and panty hose...

Whats left is a mounted preist, a BSB, 10 vanilla knights that need assemblage, and the converted Greatswords that I need to do a lot of converting work on before painting. Should be the lot... I think...

Cheers,
- Zandur

The Bash is 25th July. Assuming there are no work-related shenanigans, we'll be up there this time.

Perhaps your 'father' will be looking to start a new pub in town?  I'm sure the Red Lions (as they are known) would be excited to have their own pub to frequent.

I like them a lot. :::cheers:::

There's a thread in the Count's Tavern where I think Wissenlander has all the details mapped out. It should be some good fun.

Tomb Kings would be an interesting addition to the mix so it'd be great to see you.  8-)

As Wissenlander's men are honoured guests at my Dwarf's waterside stronghold, they've been put on the long and laborious patrols thru the adjoining treacherous mountain range while my bearded boys catch some much-needed Grog'n'Rest.

During one such patrol, they encountered a terrible beast of Chaos, slumbering in a culvert. Knowing the best could awake and move to attack long before they could return to the hold and mount an expedition, the brave men of Wissenland moved to attack the Sigmar-forsaken creature. Tho only a dozen men they were, they took it on, with its great glowing eyes, enormous furry snout, and fangs the size of daggers...

Altho many were slain, one old soldier moved in for the kill and won the day.

Those soldiers who weren't horrifically mauled to death will be getting a round of Ale on the house.

So yea, work continues. Now that the crazier bit of my summer is over, I'm making a more dedicated routine/effort to get these lads done. More pics as I finish 'em.

Damn!!! The fur and eyes on that cat are so life-like. You have 2 minis of the same thing?

Sweet looking cat, I love the colors on the minis. My money is on the cat for the skirmish, though.

I saw the warrior priest you painted in the flesh when we went up for the bash and it was superb!

Out of interest, is he gonna have these guys again by October? Can't have him trying to excuse his horrendous malling by the beasts as being because his minis weren't there

@ Gustavus: Yeah, I was kinda skeptical about the blue accents, but they worked out really well!

@ Soth: Isn't she? A pity she's currently banned out of my room for reasons we shan't discuss...

@ Boruta: Jus' give her a blue feather, and it works! Tho she'd probably eat it...

@ Obi: Thankee.

@ Soren: Haha, thanx. I dunno, after painting 30 Spears, I think they have attrition on their side...

@ Siberius: Yeah, he was fun to paint... I wish I'd had the new(ish) Washes, tho. They're my one-coat stop to fix all my painting flaws! :D

Oh, and, new pics.

Mounted Warrior Priest:

As many Spearmen as would fit in a picture. Still need to finish the freehand on the banner:

And for those of you who remember / know of the old Fimir's...

Yes, you do! I like the spearmen, but the metal on the WP looks a bit plain, though this could just be the picture.

@ Rufus: Why ty! Extinct races ftw.

@ Obi: Aye, sorta. To me the Priests armor suffered from "I have no idea what the sculptors were trying to do and it looks like an armored mess to me so I'm going to paint it all silver and call it a day" syndrome... anyhow, thankee.

Oookaaay, update time! Meant to post these up b'fore the holidays, but...  :icon_redface:

First up: Ye Olde Mounted BSB, a model Wiss had me splice together.

Close up of the (freehand) burning castle motif:
\

Other side, Brennenburg colors inside Wissenland colors. Please tell me I spelled that right...

Side view:

Now onto the Yellow Knight, because I haven't finished the other 4 knights in his regiment.

I do believe he is a Vanilla Knight, jus' like these Green Knights:

Wiss said he wanted some color in his army, and he got it :)
I think they came out decent enough, its been ages since I tried cavalry,
and I'd be ashamed to post up my SoC-Era Helf cavalry... :(

Closeups:

And now for the big reveal of my personal pride and joy, the "Leetswords".
Cobbled together from swordsmen and militia bitz plus some styrene and GS,
ye've na'er see so ramshackle a unit of Greatswords
:biggriin:

Wiss asked me to "armor them up", which I did by covering the ugly Militia Greatsword right shoulder on most of them with a strip of styrene, and Greenstuffing a rather large left shoulderpad. They're a little bigger than I had intended... I blame this on having Dragon Age: Origins armor rattling around in my head at the time, as well as forgetting just how little greenstuff you need to do something - been almost a year since I used it last.
Anyway, I think it came out alright, and gave them a unique twist - as if they needed one...

Next is the Lionshead Spearmen Command, complete with banner.

Full Command:

Freehand Banner Bearer:

I tried to make the banner look like weathered cloth...

Wiss's models ended up being the guinea pigs of my GW Wash technique, since I got my first batch of washes about the same time I got his figs in the mail. So while I'm generally happy with how they came out, some things may look a little off because I was still figuring out a wash... I tried to fix that up as much as I could, tho.

And now for the full 30-Strong regiment...

General's Eye View:

And the full batch. 49 done, 14 remaining.

The remaining 10 Leetswords and 4 Knights are in various stages of highlighting and washes, so they should be done before too much longer. There's waaay too much cloth on those horses... and waaay too much armor on the knights :P

Also, yes, I have a teddy bear. His name is Checkers. I like to think of him as a lost cousin of Mogsam, one who prefers comforting and kindness over destruction and pyrotechnics.

Also, here's my finished Dwarf Cannon. I bring it up because it was originally one of Wiss's models that he traded to me...

That's all, folks!

Aha! Finally Wiss will no longer be able to plead lack of mini variety as to why he fields his armies the way he does .

Love the Spears banner and the funky greatswords. I think they look as good as any other greatswords I've seen.

Wow, man.  They all look awesome.  Way to debut it all!

I'm quite pleased with the BSB.  It'll be nice to have a model for that character now.  And, yes, you spelled Brennenburg correctly.  For a moment I thought you spelled it with three 'N's', which would've been tragically funny.  Your work with the banners turned out better than I could've hoped for.  Much better than my original all black motif. :-)

The green and the yellow will stand out nicely amongst the rest of the boys.  And what you did with the greatswords is awesome.  They look very gritty, and the armor ideas you had worked really well.

When I get them all back, I'll work on basing them.  Did you ever figure out a mix similiar to that of the general?
