Title: Stirlanders - The Army of Eastern Stirland - Elector Count Version 2
Post by: Douchie on October 17, 2011, 01:57:23 PM
Hi Guy's,

I've returned to the hobby & have picked up where I left off with my army of Eastern Stirland. having re-jigged things to fit 8th edition I'm happy to report two stirland victories from my first two games.

Below are a couple of pictures, taken form my second game with me updated army. More pictures will follow shortly.

Their Unit filler, a poor Stirlander getting pulled into an open grave. Dwellers Below, perhaps?

Raven Takers a Stir River patrol archer unit, having performed a stand & shoot, fled the following combat, only to outrun the charrot, rally & finish it off in the next round.

Looking very nice good to have more Stirlanders.

couldn't agree more Jhig, we may be poor but we're always up for a good fight.

Some more pic's from the second games Vs a Vampire Beastmen alliance.

A picture of my cannon, it's blue beacuse it's been looted for a middenheim force. it saves money Stirland doesn't have if we can just take someone else's expensive stuff.

& here is a picture of how a direct hit from a great cannon can make your opponents look... four blood knights with one shot, didn't go down too well.

I have another game arranged for tonight so will look to take some better pictures & share them with you.

Very gritty; the army really nails the feel I expect from a Stirland force.  Well done.   :eusa_clap:
Definitely interested in seeing more of those Free Companies.  Oh, and the Swordsman unit filler...perfect.

Aye lets hope so, In truth I have a WIP flute player that will be the musician.

I have the much stuff to finish it's unreal. 2 years away from WFB has taken it's toll & I sold some units before a house move & really regretting it now.

Anyway, here are a couple of more detailed pics of my swordsmen.

Thanks for your comments guys, I'm glad the grittiness I intended, has come across.

That's one of the reasons I chose Stirland in the first place.

Anyway, here are a couple more pictures, I'm not too sure about the banner & make change it for the stirland skeleton blowing the hunting horn?

Looks wonderful and adds to the units unique feel. After all not all Stirland regiments have a hornblowing skeleton...

Thanks Spjuth, but I'm still not totally convinced. I'll leave it for now & do some 'unattached' flags, which I'll post on here to see if people prefer them.

Ok, So little to report on the painting front, I've completed the pistolliers, but will need to take some pictures.

I have however been busy putting together a nice centre piece for the army in the shape of a GOTE mounted on a Griffon. Still very early stages, but I'd like to know what people think?

Should I greenstuff some barding on the mount or leave the griffon as is?

& here is an early stage WIP for an Empire Cannon, I need to add a hat, cod piece, feathers etc to pimp the ogre up & i'm going to include the powder monkey some how, maybe standing on the brute's shoulders?

C&C welcome

Which bits did you use for Konrad?

Lovely colours mate. I like the grubby muted yellows and greens.

Which bits did you use for Konrad?

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

The easy answer is a part from every where.

Now for the more in depth answer, let me think...

legs - artillery sprue, green stuffed boots
torso - militia sprue
arms - archer kit (green stuffed shoulder armour)
head - Greatswords kit
gorget & doube scabbard - Generals sprue
empty scabbard - Knights kit
wine bottle - pistolliers kit
skull - flaggie kit
helmet - perry miniatures 100 years war mercinery kit (the greatswords kit has a similar one)
Dog - bretonian men-at-arms

Bet you wished you'd never asked?

Griffin would be fine as it is, but if you greenstuffed armor it would be awesome.  Depends on how adventurous you feel!

I have a similar General/Griffin conversion in mind and am definately going to add armour. I think that, if you do, the best way is to lower the left claw to give a little more room for the barding.

Good luck!

Nice army!

Sadly the photos don't do your minis justice I think. You should try a better camera and/or better lightning when taking photos.

What I like best though is, that you manage to give your minis a very unique character with your little conversions and bit swapping. I might have to steal an idea or two at some point!

Hi Victor, can't argue there mate, unfortunately I only have my i-phone 4. It serves a purpose, but I'd love to have a proper photo station set up. Financial, practicle & marital restraints mean that this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Plus my 8 month old daughter couldn't resist the pull of such an interesting set up, end result would be carnage.

Feel free to pinch any conversion ideas, half of mine have been borrowed form forum members anyway.

Ok so I had another game last night & got to field my freshly painted pistolliers, who didn't make it past turn 1. Four died to a dangerous terrain test from the mysterious river, the final two were cut down my Ogre Maneaters.

Here were some pictures taken after turn 1 :-(

These guy's still need a little work to give them peacock feathers, & woodland bases, but they're now servicable.

Ok, so im looking for some advise from you guys going forward regarding the army's my next foot unit? I'm swaying between starting a unit of Spearmen & a unit of Greatswords.

If I tackle the spearmen, they will be scruffy Stirland Spearmen, (even more so than the Swordsmen ,who were actually intended as an elite unit amongst the rag tag of Stirlands state troops), they will have torn, patched uniforms of different muted greens, yellow ribbons will add the contrasting colour, but the yellow colouring will appear less frequently then seen in the Swordsmen. (fluff premise being the yellow dye is rarer & more expensive then the greens, hense being less prominant in the less well provided units.

The  unit of Stirland Greatswords, by contrast will be a flashy, crisp unit. Taking the idea from the Empire Heraldry book that some Stirland Commanders overcompensate for Stirland's poor rep & so have really flashy units. As the Greatswords are the Count's best troops, where better to demonstrate this than here?

So, what are your thoughts? Both units will 'eventually' be realised, but the limited time constraints imposed by, work, life, wife & baby will mean the second choice may well be a long time coming.

Greatswords would be nice, but I think seeing a really disheveled unit of spearmen would be awesome.  Units that look completely battle worn always have a greater appeal than super shiny ones to me.  But I guess that's the Wissenland coming out in me.

I think the overwhelming support of Greatswords is due to the general disdain most people have for spearmen in 8th edition. If you haven't already started on the Greatswords, here's another vote for Spearmen! No disdain for them here. After finishing my Pleasant Surprise and my 17 halberdiers to finish off their horde, I've got 15 spearmen in the queue to bring them up to 50 as well.

These are really nice knights! It seems everyone is uploading theirs after I did mine :P. I especially like the lack of barding. Very Stirland!

Perhaps your Inner Circle* could have table cloths on the horses as armour in a similar manner to the Bret models?

And who is this Freya chick?

*Edit: doh! just looked at your army list and these are your ICs! Ignore that suggestion then I guess :P

Cheers bud. Yup caught red handed, I definately stole the idea of 'demi lancer' style knights from pictures seen on here.

I'm going to Green stuff barding onto the Knights in parts, not as complete or as flashy as the standard knights box, but enough to show that they are barded... like I said, still very WIP at the moment.

Oh & Freya was the warrior Queen that led the Stirland based tribe back in the time of Sigmar. Rumours even have it that she has some of his children. So I thought it would be a fitting order for Stirland to have based in their lands.

Thanks Smokey, I used a mixture of the knights box, pistollier box, Greatswords & even the Mordheim Road Warden model. Glad you approve.

Hi All,

I'm afraid that another post starts with an apology, no Greatswords as yet. It seems that a significant side affect of beng a father is a serious lack of me time.

any way, I was trawling the depths of my photobucket albums & found some pics of my Stir-River patrol huntsmen. Now 20 men in size, these guys were the first batch. I'm sure they were posted on here a couple of years ago, but I guess it would make sense to have the whole amry in one place.

C&C most welcome.

Looking great mate. I think the unit filler could do with another GS on it so that it doesn't just look like empty space.

For those Spears you may want to mute their colours a bit. perhaps catachan green and desert yellow?

Gotta say I love the bright colors, actually. But I always liked that sort of thing on Empire troops - unrealistic, perhaps, but looks great on the table.

Hi Captian Dob, yes that is totally my intention with the spearmen. The swordsmen & Great swords are elite & not at all representative of my Stirland army as a whole. I'm gonna use a great deal of browns, faded greens & desert yellows for these guys. The champion & standard bearer may stand out with a perfect green or yellow ribbon, but as a whole these guys are gonna look rough.

Gotta say I love the bright colors, actually. But I always liked that sort of thing on Empire troops - unrealistic, perhaps, but looks great on the table.

Thanks Darknight, I'm hoping the finished army *sniggers knowning there is really no such thing* will have a balance that falls more on the realistic side of things, but the elite units will be more flashy & colourful. I've tried to include things like patches & different greens in some clothing, just to show that they arent just parade ground troops. hope that's come across? some more pics may be required to show this off better.

Those archers are some of my favorite figures GamesPoet, A couple of head swaps & additional equipment makes them fit verywell with the new plastic archers.

The filler was great fun & will be developed soon.

I have my thrid tourney game tonight, probably a 2v2. Currently standing on 1 Win & 1 Loss.
My last game was against beastmen & I decimated them with, artillery & magic (dwellers mainly) then finished sub par units off in Close Combat. eventually destroyed everything. 2247victory points in total. he took 301 VP in return.

I'll post some pictures if there is any demand?

Ok then, as requested, here are some pictures I took while wiping the beastmen army from the province of Stirland.

The right flank!

The Beastmen line having been hammered by magic, artillery, archers & handgunners finally reaches the Stirland skirmish line. A heroic stand & shoot claims a minatour before combat claims another, the archers then break & are slain to a man.

The minatour's overrun fails to reach the imperial line by 1 inch, phew!

The Left Flank

A standoff for two whole rounds with niether side willing to move & receive the other's charge. eventually the Knight's about face & draw a charge onto the cannon behind them. this sacrifice lines up a charge into the beast's rear, by the knights in the following round, destroying the unit outright.

The Centre.

The count's Greatswords, receive's a charge from two beasmen units, their detachment counter charges the flank of one of these units... but is it enough to win the day?

It is...

the beastmen unit rallies only to be hit again by the Greatswords & cutdown... the Massacre complete!

Greatswords rock.

Looks like it was a good game. Do you often play defensively and wait for the enemy to come to you?

Hi Volks, Yes I like to whittle the enemies numbers down, before engaging them in CC. Appart from another Empire player my group have armies that are scary in CC, Beastmen, Ogres, Lizardmen etc. My pistolliers & knights tend to cause problems & if they can draw larger units away from the main assault, then they've served their purpose.

It's all about local superiority against such armies, sitting back has so far served me well.

How about you?

I have found that in 8th it is often hard to do that so I tend to mix it up with aggressive units which take it to the enemy with one flank shooting. Depends on the mission though.

Hey Volks,

Sorry mate, no progress on the greatswords Im afraid. I have 24 undercoated & ready for paint plus 12 more to build, another unit filler should give me a healthy 40man unit for the big 3k games, my club seem to be fond of.

The reason for limited progress was the need to get a Mordheim warband built & ready for action for a new campaign.

I opted for Pirates, deciding that they could count as a Militia detachment for my Empire Army in WFB. I guess they'd be Stir River pirates pressed into service.

Any way, here are some WIP pictures

Capt'n Riley Frey (distant relation of Henry Frey??? Maybe) of the Bloody Reaver.
A fair but of Greenstuff to make this Imperial Engineer more pirate captainy, head & pistol from an unfortunate marionburger.

I like your first wichhunter conversion, but that second one the pistol just looks ridiculously oversized on that model, even for GW's normal proportions. I've never realized just how big that pistol is. That model is much less bulky than GW's normal sculpts though, so that is likely the problem. If I'm not mistaken that's one of the Withhunter Inquistor models from 40K, correct?

Also some very good conversions on those pirates as well.

I don't think that is supposed to be a pistol - it's gotta be a handgun. I'm using the model as a repeater handgun on one of my outriders. It's crazy-big as a pistol.

BUT, than again ...

Crazy is the oil that greases the grinding pistons of the engine of Warhammer.

I agree, it is crazy big but it seems to work in person. don't think my pictures do the model enough justice. I'll get some more up when he's painted.

Anyway, with the new Empire Release co-inciding with my 30th I was lucky enough to re-enforce my Stirland army with; Demi-Griffon Knights, A War Alter, Witch Hunter & HuntsMarshall figures.

Demi Griffons have been built for Gaming purposes, but not painted yet. However I have started work on my War Alter (conversion). I wasn't too taken with the Carrage being the same as the wisard wagon bits & the Golden Griffon statue seemed a little too rigid for me. So after Raiding my bits box, I eventually came up with the following conversion.

Looking for C&C here, so let me know what you honestly think. Still WIP & Pinned rather than glued, so suggestions can still be considered.

Inside (still to add the book shelves, which are currently on my painting desk.)

Cosmetic, candles & trinkets to be added to the base of the statue & ofcourse the horses need to be included too

Thanks Inquisitor.

The War Wagon bits fit quite snug. I had the trim of some scroll work from the official kit after cutting out the window section, to get the war wagon bit to sit properly.

War Wagon took some work. only used 3 sides as the steps of the new kit make up the 4th side. I had to saw off the sides of the old war wagon as the side part comes attached to the battlements. Finally I cut away the bottom section of the 3rd end to create an opening. I had a vague idea in my head about how it would work & was surpised how simple the conversion proved to be.

I smell a sequel! :icon_twisted:

Don't you start that bloody ball rolling! it took me five years to finish this one.

I need to finish the prologue (which is Leithag hills) & the epilogue which may have the seeds of a sequel... warning this will not even be planned for some time to come.

is that smoke coming out of the Witch hunis Westerburgers gun??  :::cheers:::

yes mate.  That was added with ms paint.

My local gaming club have just started a campaign based during the three Emperors conflict. Im Stirland, another is Westerburg (Marionburg) and the third player is Middenland. The Gm will play as the other non-player provinces. Each of the states has a standing army of 1000pts and is led by an elector count (each elector comes with a free runefang. These states have to be defeated to gain that electoral vote and income from that state.  Each state generates income,  Which can be spent on new armys and refitting weakened ones etc.

No magic, no steamtanks. If you field Your Elector he gets the free runefang but if he dies in game.  You lose

We had the first turn.  And I invaded Averland to get a 'quick win' with a force of 1400. And duely got tabled.  Losing my war alter to the first Cannon shot of the game  pretty much sums it up.  Im now back-tracking to Wurtbad to refit the battered army.

So on to the painting.

My to do list is as follows.
Elector count of stirland on foot. (Conversion about 80% done. Needs painting)
 18 flagellants (10 done)
9 Stirguard knights (7 converted, 2 to build. All to paint)
16-20 crossbowmen (not started)
1 mounted warrior priest (not started)

nice to haves.
20 greatswords (some partially painted)
1 grand master

Second game of the campaign down and I bounced off Averland once again.... game ended as a minor loss.  :icon_confused:

So now I have an Army from Westerland  Marching up from Nuln towards my capital.

If they defeat my remaining army and take Wurtbad I'm out of the campaign.... worrying times

Thanks mate, There's still fight left in Stirland yet. I have at least one trick up my sleeve.

As to the scenery, I don't think they're tabletop world, they're buildings that were already at my local gaming club (and have been for some time) I can ask around to see if anyone knows their origin.

Ok so I wasn't 100% sure about the outcome of Elector Count version 1. Think I'll keep him as a vanilla capt/general,

I'm much happier with how the second version is coming along. I used the limited edition standard bearer as the base for the model. Left arm lifted to hold the Runefang. Right arm from knightly orders sprue, green stuffed open locket with portrait painted inside (will try and get some detail pics when able/finished. Head is from the old command sprue (with modern style feathers etc.

let me know what you think.

True.

No feather is big enough. Not until it grants a cover save for the whole unit.
