"Ah..." says Admund. He thinks for a moment on Mortus's words. "I think three knights is sufficient escort for Sir Julian Stonebridge, Champion of the Graf. He's not the Graf himself, or the Grand Duke of Middenland. I've seen envoys in Marienburg with only a pair of swords with them. The three of us going into the city with Julian should be enough. Sir Ragni of the Greathammer Clan, Sir Admund of Carroburg, and...uhh... Sir Professor the magnificent Ulrun, chairmen of the unintanigble whoosits." Admund says gesturing to the mustached mage in his large chair chuckling at Ulrun's list of titles.

Admund rubs his chin, "I think Max has the right of it. A small retinue with a watchman who was witness and a professor from the most renowned school of magic in the old world should provide ample weight to the Champion's words."

As conversation continues about the specifics of what they'll need, Admund lays out a suggestion.

"So we have Julian's cart and Heinrich, Max, and Klaus all have horses down at Staller's Stables. Let's use this cart for our supplies that we'll need for the long road to Marienburg. Heinrich, Max, and I can go fetch all the travel supplies we'll need from some outfitters in town. We'll load this cart with food for the animals, couple of spare wheels and tools, tarapins to keep the weather out, and some foodstuffs for when we don't stop at an Inn. I'm sure we can find some salted pork, goat, and mutton, breads, and some fruits and vegetables that'll hold for a stew. The cart will be full so we'll have to rely on the Inns along the way for beer and ciders."

"If we're selling dwarf merchant goods, we'll need two good carts to haul them. Julian and Ragni, think you can get some fine dwarf goods packed in crates for the trip? The rest can go get two solid carts and mules to pull 'em. That'll give us two carts of goods, and one of our supplies and personal effects. Keep track of all the costs and split it between the 8 of us?"

"We should be able to round this up in a couple days. Make sure you get things that you'll need for a week or more of traveling. Get a good waterskin, as we won't have much room for water in the wagon, and have to stop at springs or wells in towns to get more to drink for us and the animals."

[Cost of two carts, including draft animals = 250 crowns in total
Supplies and equipment for the trip (to go in the cart Julian already has) = paid for by the city treasury, as stated by the Chancellor.
Cargo of dwarf-made weapons and jewelry (to go in the two new carts) = total cost 5000 crowns.

The journey will take approximately ten days by road, assuming average progress is made.]

[Admund has purchased a house in the Ulricsmund District, at 14 Wolfskinners Walk.]

[Klaus has made inquiries about purchasing an inn or tavern. The owner of The Crown of Steel, on Ostgarten Weg in the Freiburg District, overlooking the Great park, is willing to sell for 3500 crowns. Max is ready to invest some of his money with Klaus.]

[Julian purchases a business premise in the Wynd district, not far from the Chapel of Grungni, as the offices of Stonebridge Associates. He hires a team of engineers, clerks and guards, and contracts a small team of young wizards to research magical alarms for use in buildings. With the contract money from the Graf, he sends out a surveying team to locate site for the semaphore towers that will run from Middenheim to Altdorf. Max and Ragni also invest in the business.]

Klaus asks Max to come along to take a look at the Inn mumbling something along the lines...If we are partners in this enterprise I would like your opinion on the matter Max. He will inspect the Inn before he buys it and talk to the staff currently working there if they would mind working for him as they surely know their business. He will try to haggle the man down to 3000 crowns....looking at the Inn and talking with Max about it he considers several different names for the establishment...the Champion of the Graf....or the Stonebridge honouring Julian along the way and feeding of the surge of patriotism that very likely will erupt in the next couple of months. Klaus will ask if Max wants to join with 1500 crowns or if he will only invest some money and get some of the yield of the tavern. If the transaction is successful and the establishment is nice Klaus will make a feast for the party before the departure in a coterie where he will tell them about the posters that are printed in Marienburg regarding the uprising.

"Have you guys already seen one of these posters? I heard they are printed in Marienburg...I guess we should find out about this too while we are there."

Klaus takes out a poster he will read it out loud for the members of the party that are unable to read.

In a montage like way Ulrun buys some fancy new robes from his old tailor as his old ones have become desheveled. These clothes should have cloak attaching hooks and be clearly exceptionally richly made. New boots and magical supplies (smoke things, fire crackers, ribbon etc)

He also buys a travelling cloak to go with his fancy hat.
Curse you and your ability to stay within the lines.

Mortus listens to the poster being read.

"The Emperor's foes were always going to use his actions as a way of angering the bigots," she says.   She doesn't seem overly concerned.   "It seems very crudely written."

In a montage like state Mortus will pay off her servants, lay down a good supply of fine brandy and otherwise engage in preparations to leave Middenhiem.   She will take a room in Klaus' inn.

Ulrun's extremely fancy clothes and magical supplies cost him 300 crowns.

The owner of the inn won't take 3000 crowns, but eventually agrees to accept 3200. Max thinks the inn looks like a good investment, and puts 1500 crowns of his own money in. He doesn't mind what name Klaus wants to use for the place. All of the existing staff are happy to stay on. The inn is packed with customers on its first night under new management.

In response to the poster about mutants, Max says, "I think it's very unfair to characterise all mutants as evil. Remember poor Ludwig von Wittgenstein? He was a nice, cultured man who'd been turned into a cockroach by wyrdstone exposure. That wasn't his fault! Yes, some mutants are evil - but so are some normal people. I'd say that generalising about people in the way that poster does is innately evil." He sighs. "But there are a lot of petty, spiteful people who just want an excuse to hate someone."

Max has been studying maps, and tells the party something about their journey.

"The road goes through the Drakwald all the way to the edge of the Wasteland. The first settlement we'll reach after leaving Middenheim is Elsterweld: that's a village about thirty miles away. We'll still be in Middenheim territory then.

"After that we'll be heading through Middenland. The next marked settlement is Bokel, a village about one hundred and fifty miles from here. After that we get to Deinste, two hundred and ten miles away. That's on the Middenland side of the Wasteland border. On the other side is the Woduin toll station, belonging to Marienburg. They're infamous for their zealous customs inspections.

"Once we're through the toll gate we leave the forest and follow the road through the Tumbledowns. That's a pretty bleak place, apparently. There are no more settlements until the village of Salfen, on the edge of the swamps around Marienburg. Salfen is three hundred miles from here.

"From Salfen it's twenty five miles through the swamp to Marienburg. Hopefully we'll be able to cover about thirty miles a day on our horses and carts, so the whole trip will take about eleven days."

[leaving soon]

On the morning of Marktag the seventh in the month of Vorgeheim, almost a month after they arrived in Middenheim, the party mount their horses and carts and set off for the city's western gate. They have concluded their various business affairs and said their goodbyes. Some of the friends they've made - among them Rallane, Allavendrel, Captain Kratz, Janna, Dieter and Kirsten, Jodur Gnagrum, Yorri, and Doktor Pavarotti - come to the gate to see them off.

Max's girlfriend Lena is also there to say goodbye. They kiss, and Max promises solemnly to return as soon as he can. Lena smiles and tells him not to worry about it - she won't be going anywhere until she's finished her degree.

The guards allow them to pass the gate without inspecting their carts - a mark of their status as important citizens of Middenheim. As they descend the mighty causeway all the way to ground level, they can see the vast Drakwald spread out before them.

The guards at the foot of the causeway salute the party as they pass. It's a fine, clear morning. The summer solstice was a week ago, and the sun already feels hot. The road is wide and well-paved, but the thick trees to either side are a constant reminder of the danger that lurks away from civilization. They pass a roadside shrine dedicated to Taal, the lord of beasts, and Rhya, the mother of the wild, a couple of miles from the city.

Progress is swift along the fine road. By noon, the party have easily traveled fifteen miles, and decide to stop for lunch.

Mortus will have her lunch sitting on the driver's platform of the wagon she has been travelling in.   She has spent the morning chatting happily with the driver and anybody else who is in the wagon.   he talk has all been about unimportant issues, small facts that have no bearing on the current position and random things she knows about the forest.   Once she jumped off the wagon to look at some flowers that were growing by the side of the road but she didn't pick any of them.

The party arrive at Elsterweld with the sun still high in the sky. But even though the late-setting summer sun would allow for hours more traveling, the animals would welcome a rest.

The small village is surrounded by a high, wooden stockade. The gate stands open, guarded by two militamen in Middenheim colours. They allow the party to enter the village unquestioned after seeing their Knights Panther medallions.

Inside the stockade, the village consists of a few dozen buildings on either side of a small, fast-flowing stream. A water-powered lumbermill stands by the stream, clearly the village's principle source of wealth. A tall earth mound at the far side of the village is surmounted by a look-out tower with a beacon atop it. As well as the houses, the village has a blacksmith, carpenter, leatherworker, furrier, a guardhouse, and a small but clearly ancient temple to Ulric. All of these stand around a central clearing, which has a large tree in the middle. The tree looks to be covered in posters and handbills - perhaps it's used as a message board. A few small groups of people are standing around and chatting.

Close to the gate is the village inn, called The Graf's Beard. It's a large building with an extensive stable-complex: no doubt it gets a lot of passing trade from the road.

When the party has dismounted the carts and the horses have been tended to by some stable boy Klaus will take a look at the post and what the villagers are chatting about. His Knight Panther medallion will be clearly visible over his nobles clothing. While travelling Klaus also wears his fancy breastplate.

[Leaving Middenheim]

Admund bolts the door to his new house on 14 Wolfskinners Walk with a huff. Just damned bought the place, and I'm already leaving it... The lock clacks into place mournfully, almost as if sad. Admund palms the key, rolling it in his hand. He's been sour all morning, thinking about going back to Marienburg. He huffs again, and slings his pack over his shoulder and walks to Staller's stables to pickup the cart.

At the stable, he collects the cart and double checks that everything is tied down. The cart draws back memories of his days in Carroburg, being relegated to the supply carts and the food wagons as a lad. He meets Ulrun and drives the cart to meet the others at the West Gate. The route is almost a tour of the places he's been this past month. The cart rattles and rolls by the Templar's arms and around the park. He remembers the dusty pub at the Western Gate where he met Bardin and runs a hand through the hair on his left temple where the bullet from Bardin's gun left a scar under the hair on the side of his head.

He says goodbye to the others, giving Captain Kratz especially a firm handshake. He leaves the iron key to his house with Kratz to look after while he's away. "I'll be back in a month or so. Sooner if I can help it. Take care of the place, and feel free to stay there if you like. Just don't let it burn down. My first house after all." Admund says with a chuckle.

Admund mounts the cart and sits with Ulrun on the bench, rolling his eyes at the wizard's fancy clothes. The two could not look more opposite. Admund's fancy clothes are tucked away in his trunk, as he wears the sturdy traveling clothes he came to Middenheim in and a simple black hat to keep the sun from his face.  His Knight's Panther Medallion is tucked between his simple, worn under shirt. His hooded cloak is drape loosely over the bench behind him for the evening cool and serves as padding. As the two carts before him advance, he cracks the rains and drives the draft horses along behind them.

Heinrich and Klaus ride past the lumbering carts. Admund rolls his eyes again at Klaus's fancy traveling clothes fit for a count. At least Admund could get a pint or two at Klaus's tavern and make up for it.

With the summer solstice behind them, days of increasing darkness lay ahead. Admund shuffles the reins and rounds the cart off the causeway and towards Marienburg.

[Arriving in Elsterweld]

The small town looks familar to Admund, but also different. His company passed through close to dusk, quite in a rush to get to Middenheim, and he never quite stopped to look around. He draws the cart to a halt in the shade of a building near the others, and slides off the bench. His legs are stiff as he waters the horses and gives them their feed bags.

He buys a small sack of apples and sets them on the bench to eat on the road. He takes one and chomps into it. He notices Ulrun walking over to the large tree covered in posters and handbills. He catches up to him, noisily chomping the apple. "Ulrun...tch tch tch... what you thinking this is? Some news-board?"

Admund will inspect the posters and ask some people chatting below the tree how the road ahead is.

The majority of the posters on the tree look to have been placed by travelers rather than by the villagers.

- A relatively new poster, printed in strong, clear type:

PEOPLE of THE EMPIRE!
For too long the RICH and NOBLE have OPPRESSED you!
RISE UP and tear down the mansions of the powerful!
Throw off your shackles! Knock the whip and the sword from the hands of the mighty!
Let JUSTICE be done upon the lords!
The NEW MILLENNIUM is coming! The AGE OF THE PEOPLE!

- A cheaply-printed poster with a small woodcut of a mounted soldier on it.

Looking for adventure and excitement?
Know how to use a sword?
Join Baumann's Blitztruppen
The most famous mercenary company in The Empire!
Muster at Bek on the River Talabec
High wages paid to good fighters!

- A poster with a woodcut of a bull's head.

Grand Prince von Tasseninck seeks noble soldiers to defend his lands from brigands
The prince will exceed the wages offered by any other employer
Muster in Wolfenburg now!

- A copy of the Emperor's edict calling for the toleration of mutants (text as seen previously). This poster has been vandalised with obscenities.

- A cheaply-printed religious tract. Someone has drawn a crude wolf with an engorged penis over the text.

Let the unrighteous beware!
Sigmar, the Eternal Lord of The Empire, returns to judge the sinner!
Repent or suffer His wrath!
Already the city of Middenheim feels the blow of His Hammer for their ungodly taxes!
The Grand Theogonist is His voice on earth! Heed his call for Judgement!

- Another religious tract. This one has not been defaced.

Brothers in Battle
The Father of All, the divine Winter Wolf, calls you to gather
The pack must unite to defeat the southern aggressor
These lands are ours
Let the north be free!

- A poster printed in large but blurred type.

Ban foreign imports! Shrivel the Marienburg leech!
Buy Imperial! Support your local farmers!

- A tattered poster with faded text.

Roadwardens wanted
Help keep the roads safe. Be a hero of The Empire!
Good wages. Horse provided. Must be able to ride
Ask at any way station

- a small, new poster.

Experienced hunters sought to bring down dangerous beast
Ask in Bokel for details
Large bounty offered

- another new poster.

Bounty offered
Count von Drakensberg seeks the head of the infamous brigand known as the Black Arrow
300 crowns for the head!

The villagers don't have anything of particular interest to say. They are more interested in hearing the latest news from Middenheim. However, they are able to say that the road is currently clear and safe, according to traveler's reports.

"Hmph!" Admund says reading the last two posters. "Brigands and beasts. Great North road hasn't changed a bit."

Admund slings the core of his apple into nearby brush with a sidearm throw, and wipes the juice from his mouth with his sleeve. "Bokel is several days ride from here. Wonder if ol' Heinrich can hit the beast from a moving cart?" He says in jest.

"C'mon wizard. Let's get some dinner with the others." Admund says. He will join anyone else for a quick bite to eat and some cooler beer or cider.

"The usual." Admund says matter of factually, taking a sip of his drink.

"Religious texts, news, and offers for hire. Looks like Bokel has wild beast causing problems. If it's a minotaur, I can take care of it." Admund says smirking into his cup.

Klaus hands the stable boy at the Grafs Beard a silver coin to take care of the horses and the carts...it shows some southron design and it very likely made its way all up to the North from Averland where his journey starts. This revelation alone, how far he already had come makes him smile. "If you do your job proper there might be a golden one in it for you."

After the cart and the tending to the horses is settled Klaus joins Admund, Mortus and Ulrun at the signpost. Taking a step back so Admunds thrown apple doesn´t accidently hit him he walks up to the post to tear down the People of the Empire and the Sigmarite and Ulrican hate speeches ones folding them and carefully storing them in his doublet. After taking a look at the people around the post he will exclaim to them.

"You people seem to me like honest folk not interested in stirring up trouble, we just come from Middenheim. This tax was a false rumour, Dwarves, Priests and Wizards are as welcome in the City of the Wolf as ever. The feast is over and order is restored so everything is safe and ....the usual. If any of you good men feel a pang of patriotism for the Graf and the Empire feel free to come to the Grafs Beard and let me invite you to a free round of drinks."

With this he follows Admund and the others back to the Inn.
