You stuff doesn't look bad. I've seen bad, believe me, and if you can put more than three colours on sensible spots of a model, you're clear of the "bad" category. I would, however, recommend a few simple tricks to bring your guys to life a bit more:
- Use a thin black ink wash over your metal bits. Easy peasy, and it will bring out the detail nicely. If you want to, you can lightly drybrush chainmail over it again when the ink is dry to pick out the raised areas.
- You might also use a thin brown ink over your reds, and a dark blue ink (mix with a little black) over your blues... Etc. Inks are way easy to work with and give instant results and crispness.
- Paint the shields and their bosses separately, then glue together when both are dry. Instand crisp result.
