Old Kislev Pic - custom built Kiselv Army
« on: November 15, 2010, 05:37:46 PM »
I had this old pick of a Kislev custom army, note that the spearmen have lower torso's which look like they wear robes.

Does anyone know where these robed legs were bought from?

Its actually the whole GG body, not just the legs. I guess you can see that too with the picture posted above.

Why do i get the feeling this army might be from the generals compendium..? I know that somewhere, in my old room at my parents place, there exists a magazine or book with that particular army featured.

Pics of the army also appear in the Kislev Alled Army book issued with WD a few years ago, which is where the OP's picture appears to come from.

The pic here shows the Graveguard figs carrying spears/pikes, but another part of the picture in the army book shows a second unit still with the Graveguard halberds as above, confirming that these models were used.

Hi chumley,

I think that using the new High Elf Archers box for the legs will give you an even better look for your kislev troops.

The bretonnian men at arms might be a good solution as well and will provide hallberds.

Link to Ottoman Range, in the past we have speculated that these ottoman miniatures could be substituted for Kislev figures. Pistoliers are included in the range as well.

There are these guys too:

And more importantly...

They have a good range that could be suitable (and cheap) so I would reccomend a good look round.

I love these guys, they are 25mm and not 28 and it shows... but they look freaking awesome with army painter. If I was doing it all again I would have just bought Old Glory miniatures.

Again, another thought about historicals.

If I wanted a fantasy army and did not care where I got the models from I would be looking hard at combining the LOTR figures with historical plastics that are coming out lately. Most of the time you will be fighting non human armies and the size difference will not be "seen". These histoical companies offer more bang for the buck.

I would also check out Mega Miniatures for hero models and unique ideas. There are tons of manufacturers out there if you are willing to leave the "GW Hobby".

I actually "disagree" slightly, which is not very important as we're talking opinions here, but still. I bought the Numidian Infantry box from Wargames Factory, mainly for the bows (...) and while it is a good kit for a low price it is still vastly inferior to the detail a GW miniature of the newest generation possesses. I love Kislev and thought about The Assault Group, but I feel the same about their miniatures. Their horses especially are very low on detail/coolness in my opinion. If you want 'modest' miniatures that don't scream fantasy the alternative companies may be your thing (for historical they are obviously better), but I really don't see them approaching the detail and character of Games Workshop. Nor do I think they fit the Warhammer world as I envisage it (GW suckered me for real!). You pay through the nose, but you get quality is how I see it.

For Kislev mini's I would therefore recommend (but again: taste!!) combinations of GW kits. I am in the process of building Horse Archers using Marauder Horsemen + Archers + WF bows; I am thinking of building Lancers using pistolier horses + legs + torso's, but I don't know yet which arms, lances and heads I should choose. The wings are another challenge. This may sound expensive, but if you use left-over parts for other projects it really isn't that bad. For example, the the Marauder parts I won't use (arms, weapons) could enhance my knights or be the start of a Kossar conversion. Also the cost for the old school Kislevites is mostly downright prohibitive.

These are just my ideas though, looking forward to different ones!

It is all a matter of taste, personally I think far too much GW stuff  - for Empire at least - is a horrid charicature of things, the widespread complaint of "too many skulls and Karl Franz stamped on everything". Some of the stuff is superb without a doubt, but for rank and file, on the whole, I dislike all the current ranges of Emprie stuff.

From the Pistoleers riding elephant sized horses and wielding cannon sized pistols to the bumpkin state troops lacking shoes but able to buy all manner of junk hanging from their belts and almost armoured in bits of paper.

That said the archers are brilliant (as are the militia), its just a shame that as troops they are useless...hmm, correlation here? Good troops = rubbish models cos we have to buy them anyway, rubbish troops = great models so we want to buy them...lol

aaaaaaaaanyway, its all opinion and I'd buy the Old Glory stuff in sackfulls if I was doing a Kislev army.

Original Poster:

These Kislev minis were done by Dave Taylor (former GW).  I've seen his blog around somewhere so if you search for him, you could probably ask him about the conversions.

When I first saw the new Archer box I thought Kislev.  Why buy elfs or Bretonnians when there's such a wealth of Kislev possibilities in the Empire?

Also why get Ottomans for Kislevites when there are Russians, Tartars and Poles--
