Empire Baggage Train Help (Looking at old plastic play sets)
« on: November 18, 2010, 04:52:02 AM »
Its late so I will try and keep it short.

I have been having a bit of a Renaissance lately with alternate sources for models. Actually I have been hitting the "Play-set" scene damn hard. When $15 USD buys you two weapons and warriors pirate game or a King Aurthur play-set... well life in the fantasy gaming world looks real swell. (Padre, how you do inspire me!)

Long story short I have been looking for a few baggage trains lately, and decided to look up stage coaches. Turns out dark ages baggage had not changed much between now and the wild west. (to us untrained folk at least.) After seeing a picture of a wagon train for legends of the west I started digging around. Holy Cow

But despite doing some digging around I am having a hard time finding a cheap source for these wagons. They seem to come in ones or twos, not the 4-6 I want. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I would really prefer a stage coach, as a coach is used in "The Enemy Within".

So, Ideas Gentlemen?

So share!

I have a small camp scene I am slowly building up, but I need a cheap source for crates and supplies - if you can direct me for that I will be most happy.

Making wagons on your own is a pain in the rear, but the wagon itself is rather abstract in size. That's where the play set idea came from. It turns out coaches are hard to find, but single wagon packs are easier.

These two links should take you to some cheap waggons that should be easily re-purposed. Unfortunately they still ring in at just shy of 20USD after shipping. Better than e-bay but still.

Western Warrior

Wild West

The solution to my problem was wording. Don't type "Plastic Waggon Toy", type "western playset" or "civil war playset." 1/35 is a "popular" reference scale... *(No clue how accurate it is).

I know that Americana Souvenirs is the publisher of many of the kits at the dollar store... I need to do more research. But alas I have hope. If it "turns out... and the project can be done for less than $10 I will post pictures with my spring update.

And then like that the skies open... 4 covered wagons for 7 bucks... 1/54th is large... but who cares! Giant fantasy baggage train, random toys provide for my fantasy gaming again!

I'd have said that 1/54th would be a decent scale for WFB/28mm figures

EDIT: Just looked at the link, they arent 1/54th scale, they are 54mm, so twice the size of WFB figures usually.

potentialy 20usd +S&H buys a fleet of 54mm plastic ships.

Too bad about the skull and crossbones.

I dont think there is a problem with the skull and crossbones, be easy enough to replace the sails imo. Or paint a crown on to and a big KF in the middle of the skull :D

Picture of 1/54 scale wagon with 25mm soldier.

I don't think it looks bad, not for my intended use anyways... I think that it would look spot on for most European wagons of the 15th century. Most of the advances in wagon technology had to do with the suspension and wheels anyways. Meh.

I'm thinking at apx. 7$ a pack w/ S&H that civil war bag is the clear winner. I would like the wagon cover to have some detail, I will see if I can find a better picture.

Thank you Uryens for the company.

That isnt a bad fit at all really, and at that price for that purpose, its pretty damned good :D

And no problem, my armies are complete, and I am not starting another one so I am pretty much into the peripherals at the moment, like baggage, camps, civilians and such like.

After failing to grab Luccini and my assassination in Monte Castello I am feeling fairly bitter about the whole Golden Company thing. Padre set a wonderful example in the campaign, and its one I plan to emulate. (Damn you Silic, curse your bones!) Thus I am concentrating all my efforts on "World Making" rather than expanding my Warhammer Armies. The result is my last 4-5 games have looked amazing, and with better terrain and components comes a sense of narrative that I simply did not expect.

I have more artillery than ever... war machines that are huge and foreboding.... no city shall resist me! Baggage trains to feed my armies and accumulate wealth/plunder. Fortifications to defend my cities! Dark forests fuel my economies and rivers bring fresh water! Merchant ships guard the water ways and defend the river towns, mighty towers stand against the wilderness... Lastly roads and hamlets link my new empire together! I cant believe how cheap its been too... I have yet to break my 100 dollar limit!

I have full intentions to write a "paper" on it.

***Edit, just saw a picture of those ships... they are fairly large and look suitable for warhammer ahoy and the Gen Comp. Not the nicest ships... but if you needed something fast and cheap.
