Starship Troopers
« on: June 06, 2017, 01:58:37 PM »
So I just got done watching all 3 movies - the first one is very good, the rest forgettable - and I'm halfway through the book.
Has anyone played the miniatures game that came out in the late 90's and quickly disappeared ?
I have some off-brand plastic space guys that would paint up quite nicely as troopers and a collection of Halloween spiders that could be used for arachnids, wondering if the rule set was any good.

Never played the miniatures game.

Although I did play the Avalon Hill board game.  That was fun!

Probably dating myself a bit on that one. :icon_lol:

Never played it, but it was like very short lived.
Also, the ruleset will be rather dated so I wouldn't have high hopes for it.

And you didn't watch the animated series?

The miniatures game by Mongoose came out in 2005, and struggled through a new edition in 2007, only to stall soon.

Never played it, but the reception wasn't very good. The game was you-go-i-go, with some minimal capability for response, which was increased in the 2nd ed. I guess every second game out there does this equally well or better. The focus was on small-scale action, like so many other games. So no massive/epic battles, as in the film. And yet no single-man destruction strikes as in the original Heinlein book. A somewhat bland average, with just the typical units you would except.

Some of the figures were liked, especially the Arachnids. You can sometimes see them still fetching a passable price on eBay. Many ordinary troops, like humans and especially the 'Skinnies' were esteemed poor sculpts, only worthy as cheap alternatives to GW or other sci-fi games.

I loved the Avalon Hill board game.

There were three movies?  I stopped after one I guess.

The first film is a lot more clever than people give it credit for

Really nice boobies. I got so much inspiration for the Guard from these movies.

Altough the third one sucked ass.

The first film is an often misunderstood satire i.e
1: Its implied the humans provoked the bugs into attacking them so they could start a war because they wanted the bugs land.
2: Only veterans are allowed to vote. Its okay to send men [and women] to die on a god forsaken rock, share shower stalls, shoot them and whip them but under no circumstances are they allowed to vote
3: Listen to the dialogue exchange in the classroom scene. In [whatever year the movie is set in], the veterans who took over the U.S appear to have obliterated Japan out of spite and other petty reasons

I'm not sure I got the impression about Japan from the scene - it is a while since I saw it, but I think the dialog is identical to the book except that Carthage is swapped out for Hiroshima (because the movie audience would have heard of the nuclear destruction more readily than the Punic wars). The reference is to the nuclear bombs, not anything else.

A case can be made the entire movie is a parody of the War on Terror . . . which is kind of amazing, because it was created before 9/11....
