Are shields unbefitting of great heroes?
« on: November 30, 2012, 05:19:52 PM »
Not one special character in the Empire book carries a shield.  Karl Franz, Kurt Helborg, and Ludwig Schwarzhelm all fight with magical hand weapons.  They don't really need a free hand do they?  Is it an arbritary way to limit the AS of the Empire's biggest badasses?  Did the sculptors not want to make shields?

Your guess is as good as mine. But there have been a couple of special characters with shields in the past: Boris Todbringer and Rutgar, for instance.

Historically full plate armour made a shield whilst on foot redundant and allowed the user to wield heavier weapons pole arms etc. The shield was still used on horseback however. I assume its just one of those hero cliches. Boromir carries one and dies Aragorn wears a jacket and survives.

Did you not see 300?  That was pretty cool.

This has been Robert Pattinson's problem.

I think not having a shield drives players to put their Characters on barded horses...

The only ones that have a choice of mount is KF and Volkmar.

Wow.  That was too awesome to NOT comment on.

 :::cheers:::

As for shields, it is odd.  Maybe because on the model it would cover up a lot of the details?  They would have used them from horseback, as stated, so I am not sure.  Probably the rule of cool rather than an attempt to nerf the heroes.
