Ulrun grabs some food from the table. He has noticeably not been drinking. "The sword had a demon in it." he says as he stuffs the food into his mouth. "Heinrich and I had to kill it." he swallows heavily. "It should be gone now and back to how it once was." he takes another bite. Clearly his knighthood hasn't made him literally more noble. "But if you don't want to use it I'd understand and gladly take it off your hands."

Klaus walks around between the guests and chats with several sharing smiles and words looking like a proper noble with his medallion catching the last rays of the sun and the Knights Panther cloak covering his small frame making him look bigger than he actually is. As he sees Admund and Ulrun in conversation he joins them. "Sir Auerswalder, Magnificent Sir, ... So after spending some time with us and most likely believing us now that we attract certain kind of adventure, but also enjoying the rewards the life of an adventurer yields....what are your thoughts on the matter? What if I told you that the next thing might already be in line to demand some of our attention? Would you care to offer your help or is your thirst already quenched?"

"Well Graf, cost and reliability could be dealt by Stonebridge associates" Julian grins at the graf "if you give me some time to set up my operations. I will be conducting some experiments before I leave middenheim and plan to invent a new material which will allow for quicker and more sturdy construction. I also have plans to incorporate magic into my engineering. This should be of no consequence given the wealth of knowledge in this city of both dwarven engineers and the wizards and alchemical guild"

"Is there no end to your talents, champion?" the Graf says, frowning a little. "I would like to see proof that you can really do as you say. Do your experiments and make any other preparations you require. Then come to me with details. I will not risk the city treasury on words alone, regardless of my personal feelings about you." He narrows his eyes. "I will show no favour if it turns out that others can do a better job."

"Well I don't suppose I'm much good at anything else apart from engineering and fighting." Julian pauses. "Drinking maybe". I'll do the experiment then be in touch." Julian bows  low, then retreats to the party.

"A demon in the sword?" Admund mutters half in disbelief and half understanding. "Bloody Sigmar, these are the things I was always told about as a child. Stories and tales told by nans and nurses." Admund mutters into his drink. "Joining with them," Admund says gesturing towards the others enjoying the party, "has given me more nightmares and more treasure than I ever thought possible."

Admund pauses a moment, clearly thinking. "Aye, I'll see this sword when we leave. Bloody thing better not possess me again, or I'll..."

Admund is interrupted by Klaus. He sips his drink and listens to what Klaus has to say, "Sweet Verena, you lads can't get enough can you. A week ago, I beat the teeth out of my dwarf sellsword captain's mouth because he wouldn't pay me. I came from licking boots, guarding warehouses, and escorting retainers around that rat infested merchant shit pit of Marienburg."

"Now I've got a knighthood." Admund replies cocking his head to the side wolfishly, "The marshals have offered me a position in the army I might take. I could get a captaincy out of it. I could marry some girl at court, get some land, put a few kids in her, and die a fat old man with his own slice of the Empire. Better prospects than manning the door of a timber warehouse in Marienburg, or helping my father and mother ship things up and down the Reik."

"People get off calling me 'sir' now, not 'sellsword'. This thing you suggest would have to be pretty damned enticing. I'm inclined to stay right here."

Mortus chats with the Knight.   It is difficult to tell if she knows that he is trying to cht her up.   Her replies and comments are increasingly light hearted and playful but she doesn't appear to be flirting with him.   She is just increasingly enjoying the conversation.   She will parry any serious attempts at seduction, easily as uncomfortably as they are made.

A band has been playing discrete background music throughout the party so far. Now, Rallane goes over to join them, taking his customised lute from its case and striking a chord. The party guests turn to look at him. "My lords and ladies," he says, "it's time for some real music! Choose your partners!"

He launches into a tune, backed by the band. People begin to dance!

Sir Siegfried asks Mortus to dance with him.

Max, in respectful Khazalid, asks a dwarf lady to dance with him. She's surprised to be asked by a human (especially by one who speaks the dwarf language), but accepts.

Julian retreats to the group, drinking ale with Ragni. He will get steadily drunker as the evening carries on. Calling out to dwarves he recognises from being in the temple or around the quarter.

Julian is approached by various dwarfs, all of whom want to politely thank him for everything he's done. They seem to be giving him all the credit for getting the tax repealed.

The other members of the group too are approached by nobles, guild-leaders and other important citizens: they're curious about this strange band of people who turned up from nowhere to save the city from a threat they themselves hadn't even noticed.

Dieter and Kirsten invite the group to their wedding, which will be held in a couple of days at the Temple of Shallya (Dieter isn't especially religious, but Kirsten is devoted to the goddess of mercy).

The conversation at the garden party also goes to events in the wider Empire. There's talk of the Emperor's strange proclamation calling for the protection of mutants, and what it might mean for the future. There are concerns about Karl-Franz's continued illness, rumours that the Grand Theogonist has practically taken over the city of Altdorf, and worries about escalating tensions between Talabecland and Ostland that might turn into open war.

Beyond The Empire, business is apparently booming in Marienburg. Grain exports to Bordeleaux are at record level.

Julian gets increasingly drunk throughout the night, with all the dwarven nobles, and some humans, insisting on buying him a drink. Eventually, he takes the dance floor and undertakes a shuffling, jerking dance, chatacterised by seemingly random kicks.
Despite the ostentatious style, it is clear Julian has rhythm and is quite a good dancer. Before long some of the other more drunk partygoers are copying the style, and some dwarves have hijacked the band into playing a tub-thumping Dwarven drinking song.

Ulrun nods when Admund says he will have the sword back. "Fair enough. Though remember you owe me one eh?"

When Klaus makes his suggestion that they continue he is unsure. "You'd best explain your thoughts more. I am richer than most of the mages in this city now, better be good to encourage me to leave. Tell me about it tomorrow." he says.

Ulrun will go and find the wizard directer woman!

Janna Eberhauer, the deputy high wizard, has just finished dancing with Allavandrel when Ulrun finds her. She takes a drink from a waiter's tray and sits down to drink it. "Hello, Ulrun," she says when she sees him, "good to see one of our own saving the city! The guild's proud of you. Get yourself a drink!"

Ragni joins in with Julian's dance, but he's pretty terrible - he crashes into another dwarf, spilling ale all down his beard. He and the other dwarf laugh uproariously.

Max also copies Julian's moves, but far more successfully. At the same time, he sings along loudly to the dwarfish drinking song that the band are now playing. Even Rallane looks to have overcome his distaste for dwarfs (probably due to the amount of wine he's had) and is strumming his lute to the dwarf rhythm. Dieter and Kirsten join the dance as well.

Mortus will dance with Sir Siegfried, displaying a practiced skill.   She seems to really be enjoying herself, gliding easily through the motions.   Once the dwarfs conquer the band she will sit down again.

Sir Siegfried isn't much good at dancing. He looks relieved when they sit down again.

By late evening it's time for the finale of the Black Pool Illuminations. The party guests leave the Royal Gardens for the Great Park, where an enclosed area has been prepared for them to view the fireworks.

It looks like the entire city has turned out to watch the grand finale of the carnival. Certainly the Great Park is packed with people, as is Garten Weg around the park's perimeter. It kicks off with a volley of huge rockets that hurtle into the sky and explode, becoming a cascade of white lights that fall gradually, like snow. A team of guild wizards begin an incantation, and the lights swirl upward again, forming into a a gigantic wolf's head. The head opens its jaws and howls.

The howl becomes louder, then abruptly cuts off. As it does, the wolf's head breaks apart again, before the lights reform into the image of a spire of rock. Over the spire looms a titanic man, a wolf-skin over his shoulders. With a blow from his fist he strikes the point from the spire, creating a plateau.

Admund swats Ulrun across the back of his shoulder jokingly, "Okay, I owe you one then. As long as it doesn't involve me being in one of your performances."

He will stroll to the pavilion to watch the Black Pool Illuminations. He will chat with the marshals and anyone else amiably, walking with his palm resting on the pommel of his sword.

Admund whistles and applauds as the magical fireworks sore overhead. He strains to lean back far enough to see everything overhead.

The giant man dissolves. Another volley of rockets detonates around the rocky column, releasing a shower of red and golden sparks. These form themselves into the images of dwarfs and humans. The dwarfs dig their way into the base of the rock, climbing upward until they appear at the summit. The humans follow, one of them striking a point at the centre of the plateau so that a brilliant blue flame springs up. Together, they build a city.

More fireworks send blue and yellow fireballs into the air, which form into giant rats. The rats attack the city, but an armoured man with a silver sword drives them off. The entire image explodes, and for several moments the night sky is silent and empty. The crowd hold their breath in anticipation.

A small rocket takes to the air, its shrill scream almost pathetic. It leaves a trail of glowing silver smoke behind it. A second rocket cuts across the trail at right angles. Then another, and another, until the sky has become a vast silver net. The wizards chant, causing shapes to appear in the vacant squares of the net. Each is the emblem of a city guild, temple, business, noble family or other organisation. The crest of the Knights Panther is beside the marks of the Dwarf Engineers' guild, the Blazing Hearth inn, the Worshipful Guild of Legalists... dozens of symbols that together make the city. For a moment, one of the symbols looks exactly like a purple hand... but the image continues to change, and resolves itself into the owl that represents the temple of Verena.

"Well it's especially good seeing as how I stopped one of our own." He mutters quietly. "After all, my blade stopped the arch traitor, you know who from his goal." He takes a non alcoholic beverage. "I was wondering just how proud the guild is?!" He asks nonchalantly.

Janna puts her drink down and sits up. She suddenly looks a lot more serious. "Yes, I know what you did, and what it meant. And I appreciate your discretion too. So: obviously you're looking for more than praise. What do you want the guild to do to show how proud it is?"

"A couple of promotions at least, maybe a trinket or two?" he replies and raises his hand incase she objects. "Don't worry, I won't somehow bring shame to the guild after bringing so much apparent pride. I will be a good little mage, Ulric knows, I'm rich enough now not to need to do shitty little shows." He takes his hand down. "It would be more of a prestige thing, much like I have been given here. But more specific from my own people."

"We did contribute to the reward fund you know," Janna says reproachfully. "But, I can see why you'd like a little personal recognition from your guild. As it happens, your friend Klaus already asked me if you could be promoted. The Chair of Intangible Studies has been vacant ever since Professor van Helmont died six months ago. It's supposed to be held by an illusionist, and I suspect your practical qualifications are better than the late professor's were. It's something of a sinecure, which I'm sure would suit you." She grins. "I believe there are a couple of amusing items that go along with the post. How do you like the sound of Professor Ulrun? If you accept, we can hold the investment ceremony in a few days. Oh, and you might also like to encourage Mortus to join the guild, if she isn't already a member of a different college. It's not good to have unlicensed wizards running about."

"He did? One day as a true noble and he's sticking his head into everyone's business." he says with a chuckle. "Sometimes I have my suspicions about that man."

"Intangible studdies?" he changes the topic. "That's the sort of promotion I like!" he looks amused. "Sinecure indeed. I don't even remember the last time a lesson, let alone course was actually run. Not that old von Helmont could have run a course anyway, he had those terrible wooden teeth that he enchanted poorly. He kept spitting all over everyone whenever they got in the way." he chuckles. "I'll take the 'job'." he says job with air quotation marks before offering cheers to the woman.

"Well then, I suppose I had best pick surname if I am to be a noble born professor.." he catches her look and sighs dramatically. "Magnificent was of course fairly practical for a career in showing off!" he wags his finger. "But I have never had a surname before. They never bothered at the orphanage or the boarding school." He doesn't seem upset about not having a family. "I'll think of a suitable new one and register it with some clerk somewhere before the investiture. This whole Sir Ulrun thing should give me some clout to have a suitably noble name."

"As to Mortus. She is an odd girl. Barely says two words that don't result in a magic firework display and seems to drink an awful lot of brandy for one so young. Still, I will ask her to join the guild. Though she seems awfully twitchy around authority figures."
