[Julian]

Julian's advertisments attract immediate attention - people crowd around them to see what the Graf's Champion is offering. There should be plenty of potential recruits.

Max is excited about the business lunch. He brings a bag full of papers, which he puts on the table in front of him. "Well done, Mr Julian, sir!" he says when Julian tells him about the cement, "that was awfully fast work! The Graf will be impressed." He takes some papers out of his bag and shows them to Julian. "Yes, we can get legal protection for your invention. I've already prepared the papers - um, I was sure you'd succeed, sir.  Though you'll need to fill in the description of the substance yourself - you're the expert! Um. So if you complete and sign these, I can file them with the Lawyers' Guild. Then anyone who tries to use your cement recipe without your permission will be in serious legal trouble! We'll have to file papers in other jurisdictions too, of course - Middenland and Reikland at least. But we can handle that later."

He takes out another stack of papers. "I've done all the initial paperwork for the company, Mr Julian, sir," he says, smiling proudly, "again, I'll need you to sign these. Then Stonebridge Associates will be fully registered with all of the relevant city authorities - including the Dwarf Engineers' Guild, of course. Um. You might want to check my Khazalid on those papers, but I think it's right. Once the papers are completed, all you'll need is an office and some staff!"

As Ulrun opens the door, the height difference between the two men brings Admund eye level with a jaunty hat.

"New hat?" Admund says bluntly, furrowing his brow and stepping into the room.

He survey's Ulrun's office; drawing his gaze from item to item. "So, you're a professor now. You're just collecting titles aren't you?" Admund chides jokingly. He steps towards the drinks cabinet, but halts when he notes its empty.

He grabs a wooden chair and sweeps the dust from it with his hand. Moving it closer to Ulrun's desk, Admund plops down in it with a grunt, weary from a day of duty. He reclines, crossing a leg so his knee rests against the edge of Ulrun's desk and knits his fingers together behind his head.

"So. The sword. You and Heinrich slew some demon that possessed it? That man's got a penchant for demon hunting."

When Admund refers to his hat it changes to a dark shade of cyan with a jaunty eyebrow raised. He listens to him talk and explore his office.

"We did indeed. Whenever I touch it now I feel slightly camper and have an overwhelming desire to fondle a tree." he looks at the confused look on Admunds face. "..It's an elf sword. Some other elf lot did something to it to trap a demon but now its dead. Should be fine to use if you want it back." He reaches to the side of the desk where he left it and grabs it out placing it on the desk. "Here."

"What do you think of the new office? I intend on calling the parrot Steven. Though I have thought about trying to summon a live one..."
Curse you and your ability to stay within the lines.

[Heinrich]

All three demons try to force their way through the magical barrier created by Heinrich's axe.

[Demon1 WP test: fail!]
[Demon2a: pass]
[D2b: pass]

The remaining pink demon again cowers back from the axe's brilliant white flame, but the two blue demons attack. They move so swiftly that they appear blurred.

[D2a: 86, miss]
[D2b: 64, miss]

Despite their speed, they are unable to land a hit on Heinrich.

[Heinrich1 vs D2a: 55, hits left arm. S4+1+d6 roll of 2-T3 = 4 wounds. 10 WS drained]
[H2: 70 hits (due to bonus) head. S4+1+d6 roll of 3-T3 = 5 wounds, 10 WS drained. Critical = 64, dead]

Heinrich hacks one of the demons in the face, causing it to disintegrate into sparks! He continues his attack against the other blue demon, empowered by the energy his axe has stolen.

[H3 vs D2b: 46, hits body. S4+1+d6 roll of 3-T3 = 5 wounds. 10 WS drained]
[H4 (off hand): 56, hits body. S4+1+d6 roll of 3-T3 = 5 wounds. Critical = dead!]

He proceeds to slice that demon in half as well.

The pink demon tries to advance on him, shielding its eyes from the light of the axe.

[D1 WP test: fail!]

But it is again forced back! Heinrich charges - the demon retreats as far as the wall. He strikes while it continues to cower.

[Heinrich 1: 70 (hits due to bonus), hits head. S4+1+d6 roll of 4-T4 = 5 wounds. 10 WS drained]
[H2: 95, miss]
[H3: 68, hits right leg. S4+1+d6 roll of 3-T4 = 4 wounds. 10 WS drained]
[H4: 33, hits right arm. S4+1+d6 roll of 3-T4 = 4 wounds. Critical = 62 = dead!]

He cuts the demon down. Like the other pink demon, it bursts apart and reforms into two blue demons.

[D1a WP test: pass]
[D1b WP test: pass]

[Instability test: 6, become unstable. Roll on chart: 4 = d6 demons drawn back to home plane. D6 roll: 2, so both are gone]

The blue demons are unaffected by the axe's aura... but something else is happening to them. Their bodies fade from sight even as they claw at Heinrich, until they have disappeared entirely.

Heinrich is left alone with the shrine.

Heinrich looks around warily. The little blue daemons seemed to have faded away, but he wasn't sure if it was some trick. He keeps his magical axe out as he carefully examines the shrine.

[Heinrich]

There's no immediate sign of the demons returning. When he approaches the shrine, his axe glows softly, and he can feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. The two gems that were pried from the statue are lying on the floor, along with the knives the men used... and the scorched remains of their clothing. Seven more gems remain fixed to the statue - they look valuable, but have obviously been cursed in some horrible way.

The statue shows no further signs of movement. But there is a definite sense of presence in the room, as though it is watching him. Whatever the stone the statue is made of is, it looks very durable - it would take a sledgehammer to do any damage to it.

There's nothing else of interest in the room.

Heinrich can hear muttering coming from the top of the stairs - the man who fled earlier must be still there.

Heinrich will walk out to find the man.
"The daemons are dead, you are safe." Heinrich will try to comfort the man. "I am truly sorry about your friends. Had I known that would happen I would have stopped them. You can still do something to honor their memory. This statue needs to be destroyed, and this place cleansed of its taint. Fetch the wolf priests, and bring me a sledgehammer. I will stand guard until you return."

Admund smirks and glances at the stuffed parrot on it's perch. "I take it that the old one didn't work out?"

Admund twists his mouth. "Meh, the office ain't half bad. With a little...umm... cleaning it should be suitable. View might be shit, but hey, you have a view. Not many men go from a cave being tortured to becoming a professor."

Reclining in his chair, he slips his belt dagger out and picks dirt from his nails as he speaks, "I'm thinking of settling here in Middenheim. I came here a few weeks ago with a mercenary company, looking for a shot to get out of doing menial work in Marienburg. Seedy shit-hole of a city has more merchants and swindlers than you got tricks, Ulrun."

"Now, I've got more money than I ever thought I'd have. I've recognition and honor here. I'm not just some guy sellin' his sword. I'm thinking about talking to the marshals about taking a commission in the military. The Middenmarshals seem good enough men, and good enough men are hard to find these days. Can't be bad having a good position in one of the most powerful cities in all the Empire."

Admund sits up when Ulrun gets the sword out. "So, it was a demon that was making me loose my mind?" Admund asks the wizard glancing back and forth between him and the blade. "I mean I know you fixed it and all, I'm just afraid that I'll loose my mind and not know it again some how."

Never the less, Admund stands up and reaches for the sword, gripping it and raising it to inspect it.

[Heinrich]

The man is sitting on the floor in the room upstairs, with his head in his hands. Heinrich tries to talk to him.

[Heinrich Fel test: 03, pass]

The man looks up at Heinrich, then nods mutely. He stands and hurries out of the building.

Heinrich stands guard in the shrine. Every so often, the gems on the statue seem to glow or flash. It's probably a trick of the light... or perhaps the statue is trying to tempt him into taking them. Having seen what happens, Heinrich isn't tempted.

After a while, he hears a shout from the room above, followed by a heavy thud. "Here's the hammer!" The voice belongs to the survivor of the three men. When Heinrich gets to the top of the stairs, the man has gone (presumably to fetch the priests). A sledgehammer is lying on the floor.

[Admund and Ulrun]

When Admund takes hold of the hilt of the sword, he feels immediately calmer and more controlled. The sword feels right in his hand: sharp, well-balanced, accepting. Any worries he had that the sword would overwhelm him again vanish.

[Added Purified Elven Sword to Inventory]

Admund is surprised by how the sword feels, almost apart of his arm. He flexes his grip and rotates the sword in his hand.

Noticing Ulrun looking intently at him, Admund bulges his eyes and tightens his grip, curling his lips into a snarl to threaten Ulrun. He then relaxes his face and cocks an eyebrow, "Just messin' with ya. Good work Ulrun. And thanks."

[Heinrich]

The shrine continues to make vague efforts to unnerve Heinrich, but it seems incapable of taking any direct action. Eventually, he hears voices above. "Is anyone down there?"

It turns out to be a patrol of watchmen, plus a man whose black robe and wolfskin show him to be a priest of Ulric. As Heinrich knows, the priests are working with the watch to deal with any remaining cultists.

"Sir Heinrich," the priest says, "I'm glad that man wasn't lying. He told us a wild tale about a statue that turns men into demons... I assume this is it."

[Klaus]

Klaus takes up the invitation to visit Nastassia Hess at her home. Nastassia has piercing grey eyes, brown hair, and looks about thirty years of age. "Welcome, Klaus," she says, "please come in."

She offers him a drink, then says, "As you know, I work for Heinrich Todbringer... but not openly. My role is to socialise with people who might know interesting facts, and to separate them from those facts without their knowledge. It's vitally important for any ruler to have agents who can learn what he cannot." She smiles. "Heinrich isn't the ruler here, but he may be one day. Even so, he conducts much of Middenheim's diplomacy, and he could not do that without the assistance of his agents.

"It takes a certain sort of person to be an agent, Klaus. They must be charming, witty, discrete, and brave. You, so far as I have seen, have all of these qualities. Whether you stay in Middenheim or travel elsewhere, I think you will always be at the heart of the action, learning secrets. Perhaps you would consider using your talents to help Middenheim further? The pay is good." She laughs. "And, more importantly that that, think of the thrill!

"I'm not suggesting any compulsion, Klaus. Feel free to turn down my offer if you like. But, if you are interested, I can tell you more."

"Yes indeed." Heinrich confirms the priest's suspicions. "I am unsure if it the statue itself, or specifically these gems that have this curse. These two men" Heinrich indicates the scorched clothing and knives lying near the statue, "were turned when they pried gems from the statue. I heard a rumor there was a small group hunting treasure in some abandoned shrine and thought it best to investigate. A good thing I did, and that it was some street thieves who wee victims rather than innocents who wandered in here accidentally. I would like to try to destroy this statue, and remit the remains to the Temple for sanctification and security. If you will all stand ready, I shall smash it with this hammer." Heinrich hefts the sledgehamer, and if there is no argument he will smash the statue.

[Heinrich]

"You may have saved many lives," the priest says solemnly. "Allow me to inspect the statue more closely." He goes over to the statue and begins to quietly pray to Ulric while studying it. After a few minutes, he says, "I believe the curse to be focused on the gems. They should not be touched - they will be gathered up in a lead box, and then destroyed by the Flames of Ulric. The statue also, once you have shattered it."

The priest instructs one of the watchmen to go directly to the Temple of Ulric, to bring back more priests and suitable boxes. Then he and the other watchmen stand back. Heinrich takes up the hammer, and strikes! The first blow of the heavy hammer breaks off one of the statue's limbs. Coloured lights play across its surface, but the priest begins a protective chant that stills them. Heinrich strikes again and again, until the statue has been thoroughly smashed. Breathing heavily, he sets the hammer down.

The priest thanks him for his noble work.

"I think it's likely there could be more of these shrines. I was wondering if the Temple would be willing to work with the watch to search the city? A priest and a squad of guardsmen should be enough to handle anything they come across, and I would hate to see what might happen if one of these shrines is left unchecked. Do you think such an endeavor could be organized?"

Klaus gladly accepts the drink of Frau Hess and makes himself comfortable in one of her chairs...listening to her explanation he nods when she has finished. "Frau Hess you seem to know quite a lot about me...especially about my motivations. I surely would enjoy the thrill of adventure and even more court intrigue. The money is welcome but secondary. As you may know I am a Bastard...and right now putting some claims to a piece of land in Averland, so will be an Averland noble if things progress smoothly." While saying this Klaus will try to gauge Nastassia Hess reaction if she knows and how she thinks about it. "Surely the current and future Graf of Middenheim would welcome trusted allies in the south who could also gather informations for him there. Right now I guess though my path would lead me to the City to Marienburg. What I would like to know....is you telling me more about yourself. Especially how YOU ended up in the service of Herr Todbringer? Take your time I am seated quite comfortably as it is."

[Heinrich]

The priest nods. "Yes, I think you're right. The temple should work more closely with the watch. Every last stain of evil must be erased from the city. I hope that you will continue to work with us, Sir Heinrich."

[Klaus]

"I'm a good judge of character, Klaus," Nastassia says, "that too is important in this job. As is the desire to take risks... often foolish ones." She watches his face closely, while giving little away in her own expression. "I've been to Averland. Many think the von Alptraums will not rule there for much longer. The Grand Countess is venerable, and her daughter lacks her judgement. It would be useful to have a man on the scene... and I think your own claim will be heard more readily by a new Electoral family. But that is for the future."

When Klaus asks her more about herself, she smiles. "There's not much to tell, Klaus. I have traveled to many places and been many things. Some years ago I met Heinrich Todbringer, and ever since I have worked to promote his interests." She shrugs. "What else is there to say? It is unwise to scatter your secrets, even to those you trust." She pauses, a shadow passing across her face. "I don't need to tell you to be careful who you trust, Klaus.

"I think we've talked enough for now. But I believe that the Graf will be summoning you and your friends soon. Perhaps after that I will have an assignment for you."

[Admund]

Admund adopts the symbol of a a minotaur skull on a quartered blue and white field as his coat of arms. He continues to work with the watch, and looks around the Ulricsmund and Frieburg districts for a modest home. A respectable house in either district costs between 1000 and 1500 crowns. He makes arrangements to talk to the marshals in a few days about taking up their offer of a military post.

[Julian]

Julian receives plenty of applications in response to his advertisements. There is no shortage of engineers and fighters who want to join his semaphore tower project, and several wizards express interest in working on his magical alarms. Julian meets with the Graf again, this time giving a full presentation about the project. The Graf agrees to finance the surveying expedition to find suitable tower sites.

[everyone]

Each member of the party receives a polite but urgent summons to the Graf's presence.

[At the Graf's palace]

The group are shown into the throne room. The Graf is seated on his throne, a look of irritation on his face. With him are the Midden Marshals, Chancellor Hargin Mordinsson, Law Lords Ehrlich, Stammheim and Stormaxe, and Acting Ar-Ulric Waldemar. Rallane and Allavandrel are also present.

"Ah, champion, knights," the Graf says, "thank you for coming." He gestures to a herald who is carrying an elaborate scroll. "Read that out again," he tells him.

The herald clears his throat, then reads:

From the Council of Wavemasters of Clan Lianllach, to the Graf of Middenheim,

Word has reached us of the suspicious deaths in your city of three of our citizens. These three, named as Cassilda, Camilla and Aralldor, traveled to Middenheim on legitimate commercial business. Yet we hear that all three were killed. This is an outrage. We of Clan Lianllach demand a full explanation of the circumstances of these deaths, along with reparations if you cannot show just cause. In the absence of such an explanation, we intend to loby the Directorate to impose sanctions on the City of Middenheim.

"I think you know more about these dead elves than I do," the Graf says to the group, obviously expecting a response.

Heinrich speaks first. "Indeed, Graf. I personally accounted for two of them. We found them to be necromancers, and caught them in the act of trying to raise the Doomlord of Middenheim to serve them. Death was a light sentence, but they refused to be arrested and left us without a choice."

"Your Grace..." Admund says stepping forward clearing this throat.

"The elf, Cassilda, was one of the necromancers involved in the plot with Windhund Haulage. I believe that her and her...friends were responsible for the murder of my watch patrol under Sergeant Holm, and for raising those foul... undead creatures in the under croft of Windhund. We had tracked her through the tunnels below the city trying to raise Dieter Helsnicht from death. It was there that we killed her."

"The two other elfs we tracked after meeting with the Deputy High Wizard, Janna Eberhauer. They split up, and I followed one with Herr Breytenbach to the Morrspark where she descended into a hidden chamber beneath the floor of a mausoleum there. I stopped her from doing a necromantic ritual there and killed her when she attacked me an a patrol of watchmen from the Westgate."

"I believe the third gave chase to my friends here trying to flee the city." Admund says gesturing to the others.

"For my part, your Grace, I believe that Miss Eberhauer, Father Jan and the priests of Morr at the Morrspark, and the Westgate patrol can corroborate these events. All were filthy necromancers, your grace, deserving death and punishment." Admund says firmly.

Klaus echos Admunds introduction as he thinks it is the proper one "Your Grace, as you can see it is obvious that these Elves were enemies of the city. What also is interesting, my friend here Max Breytenbach and me...we found evidence that there are more cultists in the city of Marienburg. So one has to ask himself why this Clan Lianllach is so dire about their missing ....citizens. It could just be regular custom of Elves as they race is but a small one but it also could be that the whole Clan Lianllach are not what they pretend to be. I had a conversation with Rallane here who had some vital informations regarding the Elves we identified as Necromancers. There is not one elven nation but two and my guess would be that the whole Clan LIanllach might be their kin. Of course we canīt just throw out accusations so I think we should consider very carefully how we answer this request. I think we could opt to offer them compensation and while delivering it we could investigate their doings."
