After at least 5 years, possibly 7-8, I've finally finished off these empire handgunners that sat partially painted in a box for all those years. Since my painting style and skill evolved since then, these figures ended up somewhat of a hybrid paintjob (old and current). They are in the colour scheme I decided on back in the day, as a nostalgic return to the red, yellow and blue schemes of the early nineties.

The 5 figures:

Couple closer-ups:

Couple from the back:

I think I'll keep painting empire figurs for a while, already started work on a Marauder empire ogre and the steve dean forum charity fig.

I like the look of these!  Very Marienburgish. :::cheers:::

I've got a handful of those metal handgunners, two of which are in my unit of Averland handgunners.  Need to get some pictures up sometime soon.

Very nice highlighting on the yellow in particular. Those 4th ed. handgunners are so nicely proportioned it really makes me wonder what GW are up to these days. The 7th ed. ones so poorly done in comparison to those.

White Knight, I like your color scheme here, I also saw the pictures of your whole old army, they look great. Did GW paint empire models like this in either the 4th or 5th edition army books? As examples? (Like they do with Talabheim today).

In the 4th/5th edition armybook, several models were painted in red, yellow and blue, such as the war wagon crew and outriders, the stank commander, the battle standardbearer, a few characters.

They also had a page with coloured drawings of the various province colours as they do now. At a stretch, you could say they are Nordland or Talabecland colours.

Love the classic feel paint scheme and you've managed to get the 'flock slipping off' look to actually work really nicely. It doesn't look sloppy when done over the dark base, it just adds to it.  8-)

I'm glad it doesn't look sloppy as it was intentional  :-)

bases on the next two need to be done still but won't get a chance to finish that before another week or maybe two and thought I could still show the figures:

Classic marauder ogre with greatsword (love this guy):

And a bit of a double post with the other thread, but it belongs in here too, the Steve Dean forum looting landsknecht mini:

I've had some time to paint, so next up are two dwarves and another ogre. All classic marauder minis.

The dwarves:

The ogre:

Some more angles:

4 more marauder empire-themed dwarfs. Not as happy with these as with the other ones (yellow highlighs too harsh for one), but they'll do fine.

Individual shots.

4 more empire-themed dwarfs. The one with the eyepatch and pegleg is actually an old citadel Bugman's rangers champion, but he had the right look, so he joined this unit. The two in the middle came with seaprate plug-in hands (I also have handguns and spears for these guys). The one with the helmet and breastplate is a conversion of one of the speardwarves (not an original, but a recast) with a plastic crossbow.

I like the speardwarf ---> crossbowdwarf conversion. I may have to steal that. I've got more of the speardwarfs than I need and have already tried converting one to a greatsword the same way.

Speaking of, I did the same think with the Bugman champ as well. In both cases using the flamberge from the Mordheim sprue.

Does the yellow show as much in real life as in the photos, though? I think the photos sometimes exaggerate highlights like that. (Not that they seem that bad in the first place.

I've got a few more of these conversions in the works. I'm thinking of converting some to halberds too, that would just require to swap the speartip with a halberd blade.

Yes, I've seen that one. Quite effective too. :icon_cool:

It's a bit better in real life. So overall, it's not too bad really.  :-)

Got time to finish 4 more marauder dwarf crossbowmen. The one to the left is a conversion of the chainmail one (comparison pictures below). The two in the middle are conversions of dwarf spearmen (some recasts I got off ebay, not originals) with plastic crossbows. The one to the right is the third variant of the the ones with separate plug-in hands

The conversion next to the original. He got greenstuff shoes, puffy sleeves and a feather with gem broche for his hat, as well as a new moustache to set him apart from the original. I'm quite happy with this one, he looks different enough from the original and of the two I think I like my converted one best.

Wow, that's great. The puffy sleeve & feather really help with the Imperial imagery. I'm continuing to take notes on your work.

2 more. One more conversion of a speardwarf recast and one musician. Pictures are bad.  :(

Beginning to look like something that resembles a proper unit:
