Title: Finally, my Kislevites
Post by: tangocbear on December 17, 2016, 01:02:25 PM
After many years of trolling this site and never posting anything and even more years of not painting my Kislevite horde, I have decided to do both.  So, here goes with the first batch of photos:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0049_zpsxlvqaqho.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0049_zpsxlvqaqho.jpg.html)

These guys are just basic Ungol horse archers.  They have a mix of the old-style legs (the standard bearer and the guy in the top left-hand corner) and  the newer style, that had shashkas everyone else).  The one modification I made was to cut down the rather massive swords that were cast with the figures.  I tried to get them down to something approximating the size and shape of the scabbards on the new-style legs.

Here is a close-up of the command group:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0047_zpseuyin9pe.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0047_zpseuyin9pe.jpg.html)

The figures are based on the plastic GW horse base undercoated Steel Legion Drab, as are the all the riders. The horses and riders were painted in various shades of brown, washed with Citadel's Argax Earthshade and/or Seraphim Sepia. I then seal all my figures in a solution of mostly water and a little floor wax and finish the process by applying a matte spray to kill the shine.

The surface area was then covered using a 50/50 mix of Woodland Scenics of Blended Turf Earth Blend (T350) and Soft Flake Snow (SN140).  Before the area dried I then hand-sprinkled some additional Soft Flake Snow in random areas. The terrain features are tufts of turf/grass from the Warlord Games "Frozen Turf" set.

Here is a close-up of one of the riders:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0052_zpstsmilwzd.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0052_zpstsmilwzd.jpg.html)

This Ungol's horse has a white muzzle and star painted using the technique shown in the 2004 Warhammer Chronicles article on Kislev, which is also in the small Kislev army book supplement that was published many years back.

My niece wants to collect a Kislev army but that's mostly because she's obsessed with ice queens

If your niece is a teenager or older she should read Graham McNeil's 2 novels that were combined into the Ambassador Chronicles.   Although the  Ice Queen isn't the central character, she is a key part of the story.  She comes across as extremely intelligent, courageous, and very regal.

Jealous you have Kislevites, but an army as well. Oh my.
And have to agree Ambassador Chronicles is a good read, whether into Kislev or not. More who done it.

Another instalment of my Kislevites:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0018_zpsewubydkl.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0018_zpsewubydkl.jpg.html)

This is an old GW cannon and a kit-bashed crew.  The figure with the ramrod is from the old metal Empire Great Cannon set.  I added the pack with dagger from the Bretonian Men-at-Arms set:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0026_zpsr52uzwoq.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0026_zpsr52uzwoq.jpg.html)

The commander, of course, is a Mordheim Kislevite.  In addition to his big eastern-looking sword (from the Mordheim Kislevite sprue) he is holding the binoculars from the Hellstrum/Hellblaster plastic kit:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0024_zpsg0wjrsbn.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0024_zpsg0wjrsbn.jpg.html)

The figure holding match was made using a torso and legs from the Empire Militia set, arms from Empire plastic Great Cannon set, and a head from the new Empire Archers sprue.  He also has a canteen from the old Empire Soldiers set:

(http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q408/tangocbear/IMG_0028_zpsnex4uoqj.jpg) (http://s350.photobucket.com/user/tangocbear/media/IMG_0028_zpsnex4uoqj.jpg.html)

The gun is an old GW cast.  Because the Russians used a lot of brass cannons during the Renaissance, I repainted the cannon using the new GW Skullcrusher Brass from the metallic range released with AOS. I think they work really well:

@Tangocbear
She loves the Ice queen because she's reminiscent of a key player in a certain 2013 Disney film I'm sure we're all sick of.
I couldn't find a decently priced one on ebay for her so I made one out of a wood elf if she ever wants to get into the hobby.

They are inspired by the bodyguards described in the Ambassador Chronicles, as well as the fact that Ivan the Terrible maintained a bodyguard of halberdiers (the Jiltsi) and his father Ivan III maintained a similar bodyguard of axemen (the Rindi).

One more post before Christmas.  Here is another unit of Ungol horse archers, but this one has some element of uniform clothing. The commander has a red coat faced blue, a white sash, and blue trousers and cap.  One trooper has a red coat and white sash, a couple others have blue trousers, and another has a blue cap.  Hopefully, this "pulls together" the unit in terms of appearance.  Enjoy!!

OK - time for the next installment of the Tzarina's bodyguard - 12 more troopers.  Six with the halberds from the Mordheim Kislevite sprue and six with the big eastern-looking swords and bucklers from the same sprue:

They are painted and based exactly the same way as the first batch I posted earlier.  Here is a close-up of the six with swords and bucklers:

The kislevite mordheim models are really nice although I think their arms look a bit long up close.
For a warband in mordheim where they were ment for it works really nice. In bigger numbers they appear a bit unipose which is to bad but unavoidable I guess.

I Like the excution of youre army sofar. The cannon is superbly done. The way you like to "pull" youre units together is very nice too.

Keep up the good work.  :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

Thanks.  I'm really happy with the cannon and it was actually pretty easy and not overly time-consuming.  I agree on the Mordheim Kislevites.  In a small group they look more dynamic, which is why I decided to given them a mix of weapons and also to break up the repetitive look of the unit with a converted standard and musician.  As for the "pull" I learned a lot from an old high school friend who was a trained artist and miniature wargamer.  His stuff has always been amazing and I use a lot of his techniques.

Nice start to an army! The obvious choice to break up the monopose mordheim guys would be kossars, right? And, time to show us some winged lancers! And a war wagon? And bears? Bring it on.

you may want to experiment with some more lighting from the front to improve your photos.

Yes, the lighting isn't great.  I need to find another spot in the house that works better and doesn't afford our cats a chance to "explore" what I'm doing.

Several units of Kossars are in the works, but I find them very difficult.   :eusa_wall:  I also have a scratch-built wagon in the works too.   :icon_biggrin:

OK - here is something new - a unit of seven light cavalry (Dogs of War, likely light cavalry, light armor, Fast Cavalry, pistol and sword).  They are supposed to represent the Reiters who were typically German cavalry who were often recruited by Poland.

This unit is kit-bashed in the extreme.  Except for the commander in the middle, who is an old Citadel figure, the rest have the original Kislev Horse Archer legs.  Their torsos, heads, army, and equipment are a mix of the Empire Free Company/Militia box, the Mordheim accessory sprue, the Mordheim Kislev accessory sprue, the Pistoliers/Outrider box, the old Soldiers box, the old Empire Handgunners/Crossbowmen box, he Empire plastic Great Cannon kit, the Empire Knightly Orders box, and the Empire Archers/Huntsmen box.

They are based on a piece of the WHFB basing kit, but the borders (they don't give you enough corner pieces :<) are made from Plastruct MS-819, .08 cm x .187 cm.   Although the grass and other terrain effects are almost the same as my other units, these guys have a little less snow mixed with the grass and a couple of non-frozen bushes/clumps of grass, to reinforce that these guys are from further south than other units in the army.

OK - time for some close-ups!

As I said, the commander is an old Citadel figure which I bought on eBay years ago, thinking I might use him for something someday.  I added a 40K White Scars shield, to give what is otherwise a very Western European looking figure a more "Eastern" feel, which I thought was appropriate.

I like the musician a lot.  His torso is from the Empire Militia/Free Company box and his head is from the Knights of the White Wolf sprue that comes in the Knightly Orders box, meaning this fellow is most likely a devotee of Ulric.  That is appropriate as his livery is the all blue scheme used by soldiers of Middenland.  Perhaps this fellow is a deserter, perhaps a discharged veteran with no prospects other than to ply the soldier's trade.  He has a holstered pistol from the Mordheim sprue.  His arms are from the old Soldiers box.  The right arm is just one off the plastic arms, but the left arm holding the horn is actual a pewter bit that was included in the original version of the Soldier's box.

OK - time for bed.  More close-ups tomorrow AM!

OK - more close-ups -

The standard bearer's torso, head, and arms are all from the Empire Militia/Free Company Box (the arm holding the standard is the arm holding the hatchet).  The banner was made by using a laser printer to print out a design I saw on a page of European city, district, and provincial flags.  I copy the image, then flip one of them using basic Microsoft software so it has a reverse image for the other side of the flag.  I hadn't thought about it, but the black and white scheme of the flag is in the colors of Ostland, so perhaps this unit was raised there and/or considers Ostland its base of operations.

This trooper was made using a torso form the Militia/Free Company box.  His head is from the old Soldiers box and his scabbard and sword comes from the old Mordheim Accessory sprue.  His arms, firearm, and pouch on his belt are from the metal pieces that came with the old Empire Handgunners/Crossbowmen box.

I like this guy a lot.  His torso comes from the Empire plastic Artillery box and his arms from the old Soldiers box.  His head is from the Huntsman sprue that comes from the Empire Archers box

He also has a pistol from the new Pistoliers/Outrider box, but given that the new pattern figures are a bit larger than the old, this could easily be a caliver or carbine, rather than a pistol.

This figure was pretty simple, though it required a bit of work on a detail.  His head is from the White Wolf accessory sprue in the Knightly Orders box,  His torso and arms are from the Militia/Free Company box and his scabbard comes from the Mordheim Accessory sprue.  In his right hand he is carrying a pistol from the Kislev Mordheim Accessory sprue.  I had to cut the hand from the left arm from the Militia/Free Company box and because of the little round end on the hand at the wrist (it was made to fit into the Kilsev Mordheim figures), drill out the arm just a bit and then widen it with a razor blade.  I had to be careful not to wreck the army.

This guy comes entirely from the old Soldiers box, although he has a holstered pistol from the Mordheim Accessory sprue.  He is, of course, painted in the livery of the Ostermark, so he is another ex-soldier turned mercenary.

Hope you enjoyed these figures.  If you did, check out my blog - thearmyoftheicequeen.blogspot.com.  There are 1 or 2 pics there I haven't posted here and some more historical information about the real-life soldiers on who these units are based.

My wife would say "hoarder" not fortunate!   :icon_eek:

Seriously, though, I'd say persistent more than fortunate, and probably lucky too to have the means to indulge in some of these figs, which can get costly.  That said, I've been collecting these models since about 1997.  I made a good-sized investment in them last year to round out the collection and I have a few more odds and ends on order, but most of what you are looking at was actually accumulated a long time ago, when these models were still in production and much cheaper.

Hope you enjoy them - should have a few more things relatively soon.

OK, here is the latest installment of my Kislevites - a 14 man unit of Streltsi.

These figures are, of course, from the Mordheim range, except that the pistol in the left hand of the commander is a plastic piece form the Empire Pistoliers/Outrider set.

The troops are painted largely the same way I painted the commander of the Pushki, Atldorf Blue coats washed with Drakenhof Nightshade (I'm out of the old Asurmen Blue). The pants and caps are  Khorne Red, but I decided to brighten them with a layer of Khadof Red Base (a P3 paint), and them washed the area with Carrosburg Crimson.  The fur is Ceramite White heavily washed with Nuln Oil.  The gloves, which are a major feature on the Streltsi, are Dryad Bark and the feature at the end of the hilt of the commander's sword is painted in Retriibutor Gold from the new metalics ranger.

One interesting feature on the Mordheim Streltsi is that the right legs are wrapped in some sort of leather straps, presumably because the soldiers don't have a shoe.  I painted this area in Baneblade Brown and washed it in Argax Earthshade.

As you can see, these fellows are lined up behind stakes, as infantry armed only with muzzle-loading firearms probably wouldn't have much hope on the open steppe given their slow rate of fire and inaccuracy.  I'd say they give no cover against fire, but units attacking across them would suffer -1 to hit for attacking troops in cover.  I re-purposed the stakes from a set I made for an historical miniatures wargame years ago.

The base is made from the WHFB basing kit, but the borders are plastruct pieces, just like I used for the Reiters (though these pieces are a little bigger).

For a bit more fluff and some historical background on the real Streltsi, check out my blog - thearmyoftheicequeen.blogspot.com

Very very jealous of all the mordheim miniatures

The streltsi look good. I think you would really profit from doing some more highlighting if you want to take it up another notch.

I would also consider placing the streltsi on non-diagonal bases, so they could all fire forwards instead of to the side.

Yes, your lighting critique is true.  Still trying to work something up.  I did try to base them on a straight-slot, but their legs are just far enough apart that they are a bit too large to base that way, at least if you are going to rank them up as a unit.

I like seeing these Mordheim figures!

Man, these Mordheim boys are gorgeous. You could probably buy a small army for all those Mordheim minis. Not too long ago I've paid 60 $ for 8 Orlock gangers.

Time for an update - 28mm pikemen from the Assault Group's Renaissance Russian Range.  These are the first 12 of what will be a unit of 36.

Okay - so I finally got me unit of Jiltsi/Rindi complete!  2 more rank and file, plus the musician and the standard bearer on a custom-made thick Plastruct base with Plastruct borders.  I don't think the WHFB basing kit could support all the weight of such a large metal unit, at least not without bending a bit when it was picked up.  This base is thick and heavy enough that I don't have to worry about it:

The standard bearer is one of the Kislevite Mordheim champions and he is holding in his left hand the mace that is on the weapons sprue.  The banner pole is a metal rod and I put it through one of the plastic hands from the weapons sprue (the weapon was cut away) in the Empire Militia Box (which was also the Human Mordheim sprue).

The musician is the other Kislevite Mordheim champion.  Both of his hands are from the White Wolf Sprue in the Knightly Orders box.  The right hand has one of the warhammers that go with the hand.  The left hand, however, is holding a metal trumpet I bought from the Assault Group, Ltd.  It is soft metal, so I cut away a bit of it to make it appear that the Musician has his hand wrapped around part of the trumpet:

Thanks.  They were a fair amount of work, but I'm very happy with how they came out.  I'm making progress on my Soldat pikemen.  12 more done (24 out of 36) and I also produced the banner this afternoon:

Very cool looking banner! Is it made from paper or is that a plastic freehand job?

Thanks - it is paper.  It is a European coat of arms for some city or province that I found on a website.  I then flipped the image and saved it, so that I had two bears, one looking left, the other right, so that one would go on both sides of the flag and both will face forward.  I printed the two  images side by side, then folded them together, using a thin white glue to affix the two sides to one another.

A very oldschool method. I remember printing banners from old WFB books, back in a day.

Yes, it is essentially the same method, though with the benefit of being able to choose your own flags thanks to the miracles of the modern laser printer and internet access, and also the ability to modify, at least somewhat, the images you find by using the various "paint" type software that are out there.

And yes, the halberdiers were a fair amount of work, though the overall level of detail on the figures is not as great as it is on the Kossars.  Also, the "miracle of washes" makes things a bit easier by covering up some minor mistakes.

I actually have th 4th edition Empire army book with the banners inside. I think I'll print some of them and glue them to my standard bearers. Will definetly look nice. :smile2:

I have another pushki (cannon) coming and I'm just about done with the soldats (pikemen) but I decided to finish up another unit of Ungol horse archers I've had just about done but never completed.

Finally got my unit of 36 Soldat pikemen (assaultgroup.co.uk) finished and had the time to build a good, sturdy base from Plastruct.

The base is thick and the borders are high enough to keep the figures in place (more or less).  It still takes a lot of care to move the unit, but if I'm a careful, I can do it with relatively low risk of toppling figures or impaling myself on the pikes  :|

I like the first pushki I build so much I decided to dig out the other 2d cannon I bought years ago and build another unit.

The base is a 3x4 plastic construct using the WHFB basing kit.  Gaps in the border and gaps between the 20mm bases were filled with P3 modelling putty instead of squadron white stuff - easier to work with, better at filling large gaps, and far less smelly. I then used a good sized file and put a thin coat of white stuff over everything to smooth it all out.  The base then was covered with the same terrain as I've been using plus the barrel and 3 cannonballs from the WHFB Empire cannon plastic set.

A couple of side views:

The crew was constructed on the same general principle as the last one - a mix of Nuln and Kislev type figures with some amount of kit-bashing.

I like this figure a lot.  It was an old Citadel figure, I think from the Marauder era.  He was originally holding a spear, which I cut away and replaced with a plastic ramrod from the Empire plastic artillery kit.  I then modified the sponge (which is just smooth plastic) by coating it in white stuff, to make it look like an actual sponge.  I particularly like the pants, which have an "Empire" feel. The blue is a bit different than white I normally do - it is "the Fang" washed with Secret Weapon Wash "blue/black."  I was hoping it would look more smoky and dirty than other blue covered areas and it did, a little, but that is hard to see in the picture, so that wasn't entirely satisfactory.

The commander is a Mordheim Kislevite - I had one too many for my 28 man bodyguard, so I transferred this fellow to the artillery.  His left hand is the unique feature.  The match is the match from the Empire plastic artillery set, but that match is held in a right hand on the sprue.  I cut the match away and glued it to a left hand taken from the Empire Militia/Free Company box, specifically, the hand holding a bow.  The angle of that hand allowed the match to be held at an angle that approximates someone lighting off a cannon.

This fellow is a metal figure from the old Empire metal cannon set, painted in the livery of the City of Nuln.

Pikemen turned out good. I was sceptical when seeing the individually not great figures, but seeing them all ranked up and pointy, they do look very nice

Thanks - I'm an OK but not great painter, but I follow a general rule I learned from a wargamer friend who is an artist by training - if you are painting to play rather than for show or competition, the key is be able to paint quickly enough to get your army on the board and well enough that your figures look good from about 2-3 feet away, because that is about as close as most people get to them during the course of a game.    I think I hit that standard, especially through the use of color schemes, washes, basing materials, etc.
