Nuln Plog...engineer done...
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:28:11 PM »
Hey folks,
I'm painting a 1200 point Nuln army for a doubles tournament in March.  I'm just starting...one unit of handgunners should be completed today or tomorrow.  I would appreciate any help or suggestions - I'm used to painting elves and I find this sort of difficult.  Here is an idea of what the gunners will look like...

Really like the brick wall - is it just chopped up sprue?

Yes, I chopped up some sprue.  I almost got my 5 warmachines done.  I think that the monkeys you get in the handgunner set are awesome...

Hi folks, first unit of handgunners complete.  My first time painting non-elves...there is a model missing because I'll be adding a standard bearer in the near future...

Any critique would be nice...

Painting part is very nice but next time do little bit more on shape of stones (from sprue not just cuting in parts)

Cutting old bit's of styrofoam into different shape's works well for making walls and stuff not to mention you can make them any size you wish here's an example.

Oh and BTW I am immensely jealous of your painting ability. The light grey highlights work wonders for your models. The only real criticism I would have are the feather they seem a wee bit dull. It's a good area for you to spice up your paint job even more.

But be careful. Red can easily become pink with the wrong highlight.  :icon_eek:

Perhaps use a concoction of different shades of reds spanning several companies that way you're bound to find the right shades!

Love the snow bases. I never thought about how few you see on empire armies till I saw yours and wqs thinking how cool they looked.

What Siberius said. Especially with mostly black (with some red) models, white is a good contrast in the bases.

The definition of the wooden parts looks nice. Good, living surfaces.

The cannon could benefit from some more layering. Now the bright metallic (Mithril Silver?) strikes out from the dull copper, and looks like - well, painted. Rather than highlighting straight with a bright metallic, try mix it with the basic copper hue you are using, to get a smoother surface.

And since nobody else said it yet, the first, helmeted figure in this thread has that annoying mold line. Like does the cannon barrel. Please remove those mould lines, at least from the heads, which show the most.

Other than that, great figures with good definition for the gaming board. :)

I've done similar gray highlights on black and found that a wash of Badab Black helps to blend the highlights into the black better.

Crossed my fingers and hoped for the best...

Silver metal - mithril silver, wash in devlan mud (liquid skill)
Bronze - shining gold, wash in devlan mud
Wood - snakebite leather
Grain - taupset ochre, bleached bone, wash in devlan mud
Base - scorched brown, highlight bleached bone, paint snow areas with white, glue, dip in gw snow (kinda sucks though...)
Bricks - chop up a sprue, shadow grey, spacewolf grey, same process as the base for snow.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Really nice.  I must say that the black with red highlights color scheme looks good.  But I'm still going to try orange highlights just to be a bit different.  Maybe green highlights.............
