Carlund's autumn themed Averland army (FINISHED)
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:31:06 PM »
I've been painting my empire army since 2012 and there is still a long way to go until it's finished. I am a very slow painter and I have a hard time motivating myself to sit down and grind it out. So I figured I would start an army blog here to force me to put painted models out at a somewhat steady pace and hopefully receive some constructive criticism. I am not a very technical painter so I keep it very simple with basecoat, wash, 2 layers and 2-3 highlights.

UPDATE:

The army is finished! I started building the first halberdier in 2012 and it has taken me almost 3 years of hobbying to finish this army. Instead of flooding this thread with 100+ pictures I provide you with the link for the complete album on photobucket (http://s48.photobucket.com/user/carl...?sort=6&page=1).

With the arrival of age of sigmar I've decided to sell this army, quite frankly I am bored with it and I really don't have the energy to put it on round bases. Instead I look towards the future and the new AoS armies that will be released within this year hopefully.

The army consists of the following models:

LORDS:
General of the Empire on griffon
Arch Lector on War Altar
Grand Master/Captain
Battle Wizard Lord (heavens)
Battle Wizard Lord (death)
Battle Wizard Lord (life)
Battle Wizard Lord (light)

HEROES:
Luthor Huss
Battle Wizard (light)
Battle Wizard (light)
Master Engineer
Witch hunter
Witch hunter
Captain of the Empire (BSB)
Captain of the Empire on horse (BSB)
Captain of the Empire on pegasus
Warrior priest

CORE:
38 Halberdiers
20 Spearmen
10 Archers
10 Knights
9 Inner Circle Knights

SPECIAL:
4 Demigryph Knights
10 Outriders
5 Pistoliers
Great Cannon

RARE:
Steam Tank
Celestial Hurricanum
Helblaster Volley Gun

Beautiful.

I really like the grimdark style mixed with autumn bases.
It provides an interesting contrast.

What everyone else said. I particularly like the war altar for some reason. Just really nice colours.

All models are inspiring and awesome, but my personal favourite by far is the BSB. Such paint! Much amaze!

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments, I will try to post a picture of the hurricanum that I'm working on right now.

Great stuff! How do you get that amazing gold?

I did Balthasar gold > agrax earthshade > gehennas gold > auric gold > runefang. Go crazy with the auric in thin layers and then edge highlight with thin runefang. Sometimes i put thinned out purple wash in the recesses aswell.

Really impressive.  My only suggestion would be to drill some small holes into the witch hunter's pistols and slap some black paint in there.

Yeah I meant to do that but I guess I just forgot about it :)

Here is a WIP pic of my hurricanum:

After finishing the war altar I just couldn't work up the motivation to paint another chariot, this thing almost broke me a number of times.

Anyways the latest thing I did was painting the wheels and I also touched up the gold which is awaiting a final highlight with runefang when I get around to it sometime next week.

Really impressive.  I like those unit fillers in the halberdier unit.  My only criticism is that the Captain is riding a Bretonnian Pegasus.   :-P

I'm a big fan of the autumn bases, it makes a nice change from green, and complements the cool blues of your army really nicely.  :eusa_clap:

And that is some lovely painting, too.
