I got home from work late and my daughter got out of bed and wanted some daddy daughter time so we ended up in the garden trying to name star signs/patterns. Now the dog is jealous and having put Maisie to bed I've got the beast of Truro stealing the covers and snoring loudly.

The jobs at work had 189 applications. Were short listing at 9 on fri morning.

Go through the 'other interests' section of all the cvs and if any have warhammer listed, invite them for interview. At least you'll enjoy the discussion! I've spoken to recruiters who honestly do things like that to decide between candidates who otherwise on paper look about equal.

A previous boss just went through the first paragraph of each cover letter and binned anything with a spelling mistake, grammar mistake or anything that sounded generic. Then he went through the overqualified foreigners trying to get their visa work hours and binned those. Cut it down from 450 to about 50 in an hour and a half with his 2IC helping him out.

I'd like to do that, but we have to score objectively if they meet essential criteria.

My first job, it said "fill this in using a black pen" and if anyone used blue they just got binned.

Although we've had 17 applications with declared disabilities, and if they meet the essential criteria we have to interview them.
Only wanted to interview 10 people, so might have to just do all those!

ha! disability is the only thing that's declared, but i don't see whats to stop anyone just saying "yup im disabled"- presumably we can't ask them about it, and if anyone does just go "oh, dyslexia"

funnily enough, i'm on the interview panel because there are only 2 other men at the library on my grade or higher, and one works part time.
Got to have a diverse panel!

A friend of mine was applying for teaching jobs and got no-where, so he sent off some applications in which he ticked all of the disabled/ethnic group boxes and ended up having some quite awkward interviews. I don't think it resulted in any jobs but at least he got his foot through the door!

Some friends and I once - for fun - created a fake online dating profile for a scat-loving, racist, red-haired finnish dwarf. No photo, but boy was "ass-spelunker's" profile offensive. We'd received 400+ messages within 24 hours.

Pity you can't just take a "disabled top ten" or something rather than all of them. What a waste of time.

My most recent ex-boss only hired straight women if they'd just had a relationship bust-up to sort of guarantee they wouldn't get pregnant. Otherwise only men and lesbians.

The panel has to be diverse, but all the candidates are all disabled cause more than 10 applied, you only want to interview 10 and discrimination laws say you have to interview disable people. What about the able people that aren't getting interviewed. Isn't that discriminatory?

we have to interview if disable people meet the essential job requirements, not just all disabled people who apply. It for sure doesnt sit right with me not interviewing any able bodied people!

and its uni policy, not actual legislation. the Librarian and my line manager spoke to HR and they were like "just interview some of the disabled people"

They made the job requirements too generic- they could easily have put experience of working in library on essential and culled it right down!

It's very interesting doing the actual recruiting though. I'm also involved in 3 other projects at the moment as well as my normal work, so quite varied fun and interesting at the moment. fun start to the new year!

This has been a great weekend for German sports:

- Today, the national handball team beat the strong Spaniards, and is now European champion.
- Yesterday, Angelique Kerber, to my utter amazement, beat Serena Williams to win the Australian Open.

Good to see that there is something else besides football.
