Finlay and I met up at Warhamster World in Nottingham for a 2550-point Treachery and Greed game. After a chilly walk along the canal path (summer is long over in England) we arrived to find the gaming hall full of school children.

Not that you can see any of them on those pictures. But it was much busier than usual!
After buying a set of the new magic cards (the guy in the shop was more interested in talking to someone else than taking my money), we unpacked our armies.
This is mine.
This is Finlay's.
Here's my army list:
General Condottiere squid tattoos, shield of Myrmidia, privateer's sabre, 238
potion of excessive speed, pistol
Tactician, stubborn
Shaman Lord Level 4, panda pelt 230
Halfling Warlord Cockatrice, spear, light crossbow, curiass of perfect safety 154
Carroccio 180
24 Men-at-arms great weapons, full plate, command 265
25 Dwarf mercenaries dwarf pikes, command, banner of Ranald 300
(Condottiere's retinue)
10 Condotta Marksmen arquebuses 90
10 Condotta Marksmen arquebuses 90
25 Condotta Soldiers command 150
10 Knights lances, full plate, barding, command 255
10 Border Horsemen command 145
10 Halfling Rangers slings 110
Horse Artillery 90
Mortar 75
Mortar 75
Great Cannon 100
This is almost the same list as I used in the 5000-points report. I swapped my pikemen for men-at-arms because I wanted to stick to GW models while in Warhamster World. I gave the halflings slings to take advantage of the new sling rules, dropped the ribaudequin because it never does anything, and added a halfling warlord on a cockatrice.
Finlay will probably post his list later.
For my wizard lord, I had the spells throne of vines, flesh to stone, flock of doom, and transformation of Kadon. Finlay had throne, transformation, beast of horos and dwellers below on his lord, and mindrazor and pendulum on his level two.
I was quite please to have rolled transformation, since I had brought a manticore and chimera especially.
Deployment:

Cannon, horse archers and knights (including the general). Finlay's brigands took the woods.
Men-at-arms (plus the BSB and wizard lord), halberdiers (plus ogre captain), carefully-positioned arquebussiers (including the level two wizard).
Mortar, cannon and ogres.
My hobbits occupied the tower.
Horse archers, cockatrice, arquebussiers and cannon.
Knights, dwarf pikes (plus the wizard lord), halberdiers and two mortars.
Men-at-arms (plus the general), arquebussiers, carroccio and horse artillery.
To be continued!
-
Ah, even more oldschool goodness! Warhammer World sure looks like a nice place to play. Can you just show up and get started when there's an empty table?
My hobbits occupied the tower.
...said Gandalf to Saruman...
-
Turn one:
Finlay won the first turn. First he moved his light cavalry like this...
...and then he changed his mind and moved them away.
In the magic phase, he cast penumbral pendulum towards my dwarfs... and miscast! Also, the spell stopped just in front of the unit. Finlay rolled up a scary miscast that killed all but one of his arquebussiers, and nearly sent his wizard to hell.
He landed a mortar shell on my halberdiers, killing quite a few of them, and also shot some of my arquebussiers. But he'd blocked one cannon with his knights.
The other cannon shot my cannon, but only killed two of the crew. The ogres went for a stroll through the woods.
In my turn, I cast throne of vines, which Finlay decided not to dispel. Then, I cast transformation of Kadon on a 20+, and rolled irresistible force. Throne of vines negated the miscast, and my wizard became a mountain chimera!
4d6 attacks! Yes!
My horse artillery misfired, but my cannon killed four knights from across the other side of the board. I dropped a mortar shell on the halberdiers, shot the light cavalry with the carroccio, and killed the last arquebussier and the level two wizard with my hobbits.
The halfling warlord and the horse archers got ready to charge the cannon.
To be continued even more!
-
Warhammer World sure looks like a nice place to play. Can you just show up and get started when there's an empty table?
It is, and you can!
Plus you can buy beer and drink it in the gaming hall.
-
Cool!
Also, that's the first battle report I read when somebody has pulled of Kadon's with a mountain chimera, had the model ready, AND provided photographical evidence! Well done! :::cheers:::
-
that's the first battle report I read when somebody has pulled of Kadon's with a mountain chimera, had the model ready, AND provided photographical evidence! Well done!
I was quite excited, but fate had a bitter destiny waiting for me...
Turn two:
Finlay charged his knights into the men-at-arms, but didn't fancy taking on the chimera. He also charged the halberdiers, but they fled.
The ogres stopped loitering in the woods, and emerged to threaten the cannon.
In the magic phase, he cast beast of horos on his general, giving him +3 strength and attacks. Then he cast dwellers below on my dwarfs and killed half of them!
I was sad.
Finlay shot my chimera with his cannon, causing six wounds. But it has ten!
Those knights had a lot of attacks. Finlay's general killed my champion eight times over. But, the unit was stubborn (and it killed a couple of knights. Maybe three, in fact).
On my turn, I had the chimera charge out of its unit and into the enemy wizard!
Also, the cockatrice charged and killed a cannon with its death gaze.
But then: disaster! Finlay dispelled my transformation in the magic phase! My wizard was dead!
-
You have some of the most entertaining battle reports, rufus. :::cheers:::
-
You have some of the most entertaining battle reports, rufus.
Thanks. I cried continually after turn two though.
Turn 3:
His men-at-arms and halberdiers both charged my dwarfs. I was hopeful of killing his wizard with my pikes.
This is a picture of Finlay looking shocked about something, but I have no idea what it was.
In the magic phase, he cast transformation and turned his wizard into a manticore! No chance of killing it now.
A mortar killed most of my horse archers, and the others rode off the board.
The dwarfs broke, and both units pursued. The halberdiers hit my knights, but the men-at-arms would need a high roll to reach my halberdiers...
...like perhaps a double six.
Have a mortar shell and run away, ogres!
Ogre captain vs knights. The knights lost.
My halberdiers lost too.
Both units were run down.
And the men-at-arms went after a mortar.
My carroccio moved up to support the men-at-arms, now that my general was dead.
But the knights were wiped out, and Finlay's general made a getaway. Meanwhile, the cockatrice killed the mortar, and headed for the last cannon.
Turn 4:
The ogre's halberdier unit moved towards the arquebussiers.
But what's this? A mountain chimera?
Is there no end to Finlay's villainy?
That's his chimera impression, if you're wondering.
I don't have time to complete this now, but I'll post the last bit later. There's not much left.
-
Does anyone come over and check out your armies?
Firstly the GW secret police for non-GW models? :engel:
Secondly - other gamers or GW staff asking what rules set you are playing with that allow War Wagons, Cockatrice, Ogres and Halflings for starters in Empire armies ................
:biggriin:
-
The new WFB book specifically mentions being creative and adding your own stuff to the game.
As far as non-GW models, I've seen a number of batreps and event photos of people playing ancients there -- so at least some acknowledgment that other companies exist appears to be tolerated.

I was more concerned about us using some... "photocopies" of rufus' army book "which he left at home because it was too heavy to take on the train". No one noticed the Halberds at all, and yeh we usually do get some kids looking at the nice models/asking what we were using.
I had a great time as per usual.
My list was
Condottiere, Barded Horse, Shield, FPA, Sacred spear of Myrmidia, Lucky Coin, Whirlwind attack.
Level 4 wizard, Sorcerous squid tattoos, Dispell Scroll
Captain, FPA, Shield, BSB, Icon of Glory
Wizard, level 2, Cathayan silk robes
Ogre Captain, Heavy Armour, Dragon helm, shield, Troll blood elixir, Privateers sabre, Defense in Depth
24 Men at arms, Great Weapons, FPA, Full Command
33 Condotta Soldiers, Heavy armour, Halberds
10 skirmishing arquebusiers
8 scouting Brigands with light crossbows
10 knights, full armour, full command, Maces, +1str, Banner of spite
5 Border Horse, bows, spears, musician.
6 Ogres, Great Weapons, Heavy armour
Mortar
2 cannon.
Things which strike me about 8th. Magic is more powerful but more random.
The game is less skillful and more luck.
Knights are rubbish.

Sounds like it is more fun and frustrating.
-
What models are you using for the Halbs? They are pretty good looking...
-
Looks like Perry miniatures War of Roses stuff to me... I think Finlay had them in his painting thread, too.
-
I like this report a lot so far, keep it coming please. Also, I think I have to speed up my plans to finish my wizards and buy the 8th edition rulebook. I want wizards who can transform too!
Castozor
PS: you're both quite scary... :icon_eek:
-
SO...
MANY...
TRANSMOGRIFIED WIZARDS!!! :icon_eek:
-
SO...
MANY...
TRANSMOGRIFIED WIZARDS!!! :icon_eek:
It's probably never going to happen in any more of my games, which is a shame.
It was awesome though.
I'm just pleased the 4d6 attack thing didn't get to eat my entire army.
Johan, my halbs were indeed the WotR. Rufus' are all lovely old metal models.
-
Warhammer world should be closer to the south. It looks fun.
-
you're both quite scary... :icon_eek:
Yes.
Turn 5 or 6 or something:
Finlay shoots the cockatrice with his cannon. One wound!
His halberdiers chase my arquebussiers off the board.
My men-at-arms charge his general. Everyone shoots the wizard's unit. The cockatrice kills the cannon.
Have a dispel, chimera. The men-at-arms lose to the general and run away.
The evil general kills the men-at-arms. The wizard has a go at dwellers below on the carroccio, but it passes the test.
The halfling charges the general in the hope that he will die to a death gaze. He doesn't, but he does take two wounds. He doesn't flee. I shoot the wizards unit with a lot of things, but he and the bsb survive.
Game over! I've lost, and nothing much is left on either side.
We went for a drink or two at Bugman's, where Finlay was asked to prove he was over 18.
In summary:
- Transformation of Kadon beat me up and stole my lunch money.
- You can never have enough mortars.
- Halflings are always awesome and you should shoot them early on.
- Squid wagons are indestructible.
- It's probably not OK to take your shirt off at warhamster world, even if it is hot in there.
- Don't put your cannon behind a wood where it can't see anything.
- I'm not allowed to complain that my horse archers are rubbish when I've intentionally taken a rubbish unit. Apparently.
- 8th edition is crazy.
- no victory points for half damage is lame.
- I hate you, Transformation of Kadon! You got me all excited and then nothing happened.
Warhammer world should be closer to the south.
Maybe they'll move if for you if you ask nicely.
-
It would be nice if they did that. We are severly lacking in nerdtastic faux medieval bar and grills.
The halflings all survived? Proves you should have taken more.
-
The halflings pissed me off. 20 bs5 shots at 18 inches. Ludicrous.
We also went to the oldest pub in the world.
-
It is the age of rolling-hammer. See how many you can throw a game.
-
No one can kill halflings. Though it helps if you don't really try.
-
They can get heavy armour though! That'll totally help when the 30 Halfling pikemen vs Dwarf pikemen grind begins.
-
True. Halfling pikemen get to re-roll attacks against most things too, thanks to their high initiative and the new 'strike first' rule.
I think I played quite badly in this game.
-
No no no, you were merely looked unfavourably upon by
Gork and mork er, uh I mean the dice gods.
-
Pikes are still 'always strike first'? Of course, though I had forgotten (or thought somehow the new rules killed ASF in pikes) I am very glad to have had my muddled brain put right before my big game tomorrow.
But ... my foe will be HE? So who will strike first (is it a dice off?) and does my ASF cancel his, and thus stop his re-rolls??
[Edit - found the BRB and yeah, my guesses where correct. Strike simultaneously and no re-roll].
-
PS: you're both quite scary... :icon_eek:
You should see them live...
-
I think rufus needs to gain a couple of pounds....so he should join the next Eurobash and get stuffed by Annīs great food.
-
You're really into some great battle reports these day Rufus!
I'm positively jealous.
-
...said Gandalf to Saruman...
great pun.
-
I am not sure if the throne of vines prevents miscasts on other mages.
-
No no no, you were merely looked unfavourably upon by Gork and mork er, uh I mean the dice gods.
Thanks, but I did make a lot of bad decisions. It doesn't help that you get no victory points for a unit you have killed all but two of.
found the BRB and yeah, my guesses where correct. Strike simultaneously and no re-roll
That's right.
PS: you're both quite scary... :icon_eek:
You should see them live...
And, scarier still, shirtless.
As I will be at the next Eurobash...
You're really into some great battle reports these day Rufus!
Thanks! There might not be another one for a while though.
I think rufus needs to gain a couple of pounds
I know, but I literally can't.
I am not sure if the throne of vines prevents miscasts on other mages.
No, it doesn't.
-
You're really into some great battle reports these day Rufus!
Thanks! There might not be another one for a while though.
You're still playing more battles that are more awesome then mine!
I think rufus needs to gain a couple of pounds
I know, but I literally can't.
It's true, he can't. I've seen Rufus eat and he enjoys his meals but he hasn't gained a pound over the years judging from the pictures!
Maybe if we put him on a diet of lard with only gravy to drink, though I'm not sure even that would help....
-
The only big mistake was the Transformation of Kadon mishap.
-
Maybe if we put him on a diet of lard with only gravy to drink, though I'm not sure even that would help....
No, it really wouldn't. It's quite annoying.
The only big mistake was the Transformation of Kadon mishap.
If I'd rolled up fewer dice for that magic phase, you might not have been able to dispel it. I was still an idiot though.
-
Maybe if we put him on a diet of lard with only gravy to drink, though I'm not sure even that would help....
No, it really wouldn't. It's quite annoying.
You know what I'd pay for that annoyance ?
-
Sorry!
-
Sorry!
So am I :biggriin:
-
Finlay looks much happier than I do in pictures.
Also, it turns out that warmachines always fail initiative tests. So the cockatrice's death gaze always kills them automatically. Though it did anyway.
-
I thought it went by the crew's initiative of three. . .
-
No, they auto-fail all tests apart from toughness and leadership.
Cover your eyes, mortar: it's a cockatrice! Oh, you can't...
-
Well it's hardly like a cannon can dodge something.
-
It won't catch a cold though, because it can do toughness tests.
-
so dwellers below auto kills artillery but plague doesn't.
How does that make sense?
-
Well, plague is easier to cast...
-
I only used plague as its the only spell which forces toughness tests or die, off the top of my head.
There are probably others though.
It just seems odd that they make them fail some, but not others.
-
It is a bit odd. But I suppose they thought it would be wrong to auto-fail toughness tests when the machine has toughness seven.
-
I don't care that you two look like you haven't eaten anything for three years, or that Finlay has botox in his face making him unable to stop smiling, these are hands down the most entertaining battle reports ever.
It feels like I am reading Conan the Comic all over again!
Hats off to rufus I say! :::cheers:::
-
Hey, that's nice! Glad you liked them!
-
It says on page 108 of the BRB that "you always use the Movement, Weapon Skill, Ballistic Skill, Strength, Initiative, Attacks and Leadership of the crew."
-
It does, but right below that it explains about characteristic tests and how they fail most of them.
-
or that Finlay has botox in his face making him unable to stop smiling,
What can I say, I FREAKING LOVE WARHAMMER.
Plus Rufus is a great opponent, we were drinking beer all day, and it is lovely to play with 2 fully painted armies, with Rufus' chock full of cool old stuff.
-
Finlay is the world's happiest person!
-
Yeah, seriously, Finlay can't stop smiling.
And Rufus looks like an old citadel ogre.
-
And Rufus looks like an old citadel ogre.
Uh, OK. Which one?
Is there one with awesome dress sense?
-
All of them had awesome dress sense.
-
That's probably fine then.
I have to say though, being compared to an ogre is a strange new experience for me.
-
You should club him and eat his bones.
-
I have to say though, being compared to an ogre is a strange new experience for me.
Especially when you anatomy is more akin Gollum's than an Ogre... :icon_cool:
Still, you two really seems to enjoy playing and that is what this game is all about (most people here fails to the same).
-
What, I was meant to have fun?
What the hell.
-
I have to say though, being compared to an ogre is a strange new experience for me.
Especially when you anatomy is more akin Gollum's than an Ogre... :icon_cool:
I can't argue with that, I'm afraid.
But yes, warhammer is fun!
-
I should probably point out that you played the magic all wrong. You can only use one lore per wizard, not even a Slann can go for a ToV and ToK combo...
-
Unless you were using a Treachery_and_greed (http://treacheryandgreed.com) special campaign list, but that would make you awesome. Naaaaah ! :engel:
-
I'm glad there are people to randomly tell me how to play warhammer though! I'd have no idea otherwise.
-
Rufus, I am shocked. Have you been entirely unaware up until now that there is a rulebook with everything written down in it?
It astounds me you've been playing this long and yet you have relied on random people telling you how. I have gone up to random people on the street and asked them about panic tests and line of sight and they have never, truly never, had a clue what I am going on about.
-
that looks like an interesting army list, where would one find it at?
-
Treachery_and_greed (http://treacheryandgreed.com/)
Clickety click linketty link....
And then again where it says "army lists"
