Ulrun concentrates, closing down his normal senses in favour of his awareness of the winds of magic. He can sense one powerful wizard, somewhere above him... but he suspects that is Law Lord Wasmeier. Other than Mortus, the odd young lady who has just joined the group, he can sense no other magic presences within the 100 or so yards range of his ability.

So either the shapechanger is beyond that range, or it is not a magic-user.

"Yes, the fake Elias must be found at once," Sir Barthel says, "impersonating a Knight Panther is a very serious offence. We will check on Brunhilde as well, along with the other prisoners. Any of them could have been released using Elias's authority. As for you," he says, looking at Heinrich, Klaus and Admund, "you are free to go." He doesn't bother to apologize for his treatment of them.

"Um, should we all stay together?" Max says, "or split into groups?"

"We should stick together... I don´t think we should wander around the palace grounds in hope to find the shapeshifter...but you said that the Law Lord Ehrlich is here...and the Ar Ulric, we should meet up with them and plan our next step."

"I'm sure Ar-ulric and the Law Lords will be coordinating the knights in looking for the shapechanger," Max says. "I'm not sure if we should bother them right now. It might still be close by - we should at least look for it, shouldn't we?"

Ser Barthel could you be so nice to provide some weapons to Admund and Heinrich here should we meet with the Imposter?"

"So there is a villain still lose in the building who then imitating a Knight?" Admund says eying Sir Barthel with sarcastic contempt.

"We should check with the knights who are securing the exits first to see if they've seen Sir Barthel, then we can go checked on this damned woman. If this fake Sir Elias did set her free, the men would know if the shape changer escorted her out with him. If we're lucky, we won't be far behind him. Remember, this shape changer can't be running away, as it would arouse suspicion."

Admund unfolds is arms and move toward the door to leave. On the way, he stands before Sir Barthel and eyes him. He nods in sarcastic approval and pats him on the shoulder. "Well done today, mate. Really earned those spurs."

"Show some proper respect, Admund." Heinrich chides his friend, "The sir was only doing as he thought right. It is not truly his fault he did not know better. He has admitted his error, trying to rub is nose in it is a fool's errand."

"If dragging people to a basement and whipping them on a cocked up presumption is what he thinks is right, then this city has some deep problems, Heinrich." Admund says curtly and shoulders his way out the door.

Mortus will also detect magic.

[assuming she detects nothing new].

Her eyebrows raise slightly and she glances at Ulrun but she doesn't say anything.   She listens to the conversation about the shapeshifter, trying to remember if she read anything about shapeshifters when she was trying to find a way of getting her magic back.   She is also aware of the need to talk to Rallane.

"We have no weapons to spare," Sir Barthel tells Klaus. "You may retrieve yours from the gatehouse, if you wish."

Mortus also uses her magical awareness, but she achieves the same results as Ulrun. Wasmeier is the only other wizard nearby.

Sir Barthel's face begins to flush with rage as Admund taunts him. When he pats him sarcastically on the shoulder, it's the final straw. Sir Barthel goes to strike Admund in the face with his fist.

[Sir Barthel (striking to stun): 15, hits head (stun attempt). S6+1-2 (unarmed)+ d6 roll of 2 -T3-A2= 2. (2*5+20) = 30% stun chance. Dodge blow = 85, fail. Stun roll = 80, not stunned]

Admund tries to avoid the punch, but is too slow. It connects, causing him to stagger back. But he's not otherwise harmed.

"Don't touch me again, peasant," Sir Barthel says. "Listen to your wise friend." He gestures at Heinrich.

The knights march out of the interview room, leaving the group alone.

The nearby cells are all securely locked. Peering through the observation windows reveals that Bardin is in one cell, and Brunhilde in another. Only one other cell is occupied: inside it is an oldish man with a frustrated look on his face.

The group leave the basement and go outside. Reya is busy teaching one of the Knights of the White Wolf to play a clapping game, but she pauses to wave at Julian and Ulrun.

They ask one of the Knights Panther if Sir Elias has left the building (showing the sealed document to establish their authority). "Sir Elias and a patrol of men-at-arms left for the palace ten minutes ago," the knight says, "he had a sealed message from the Law Lords to deliver to the Graf."

When he's told that Sir Elias has gone to deliver a letter, Admund swears under his breath and rubs his face is frustration. He can see in his head the shape changer's foul plan.

"Sir Elias has been found bound and unconscious in a closet." Admund says to the Knight Panther. "The one you saw is a fraud using magic to imitate a Knight, and might be making an attempt on the Graf. Seal the Middenpalaz gates. No one enters or leaves. Not even the Law Lords or the Al Ulric until we are sure that no more foul magics of imitation or being used here. Alert your Knight Captain and get two men with every city official and keep them inside for now."

Turning to the others, "C'mon lads, we need to get to the Graf!"

Klaus stepping out of the building with a look of grim determination on his face....while inwardly smiling with great relief that he wasn´t flogged listens to what the Knight Panther says.....his look changes to being highly alerted and concerned. Making use of his ability to speak to large crowds Klaus voice booms with authority over the courtyard sounding like a noble commanding his troops not accepting anyone to doubt him.

"You heard the man the Graf is in danger, and we have to act quickly. You there!" He points at the knights of the White Wolves, " ...come along with us take the girl with you until we manage to give her another escort. Lets hurry we have to reach the Graf before Sir Elias can talk to him on his own. You there" Klaus points at another man "Go and inform the Ar Ulric and the Law Lord Ehrlich immediately that the Graf is in danger and that they shall remain where they are until their escorts arrive. You" Klaus points at yet another person ....most likely a guard in chainmail, overwhelmed by the situation staring confused at the group "Run for the Law Lord Wasmeier tell him that an Assassin is about to harm the Graf and tell him if he has a spell that can warn the Graf about the situation or that would bring him to the Graf he should do so immediately. If anyone knows a short cut or side entrance we can use he should say so. Now...lets fly!" Hopefully making everyone snap into action Klaus rushes towards the Palace.

"Ar-Ulric's orders were to stay here," says one of the Knights of the White Wolf. The man's beard is so thick it would put some dwarfs to shame. "Let the Graf's hounds deal with this."

This deliberately provocative statement causes the nearby Knights Panther to scowl, but they put it aside for now. "Go and tell Ar-Ulric what's happening then, if you won't do anything else," one of the Panthers tells the White Wolves. Turning to the group, the Panther says, "we'll go with you." He refers to himself, two other knights, and six men-at-arms. "The gates are the only way in. We must be swift."

The group rush off toward the inner palace gates. Max sprints off to the guard post to retrieve the weapons Heinrich, Klaus and Admund left there. The day is warm and sunny, and at any other time the palace grounds would be wonderful to stroll around. Out in the Square of Martials, beyond the railings, the ice-dancing is continuing. But there is no time to waste: the Graf's life is in immediate danger!

The gates to the inner palace are shut when the group arrive. When asked about Sir Elias, one of the guards says, "Sir Elias arrived a short while ago with a message for the Graf. He said that the gates were to be closed after him, and no one was to enter or leave until further notice." He peers at the group suspiciously. "There's an assassin on the loose in the palace grounds, he said."

"There is," one of the Panthers with the group says, "but he may have already entered the Palace with Sir Elias. Open the gates at once."

The guard hesitates, uncertain which order to follow.

Max returns, completely out of breath and sweating heavily. He gives Heinrich, Klaus and Admund their weapons back.

"Uh... yes sir!" the guard says, deciding that the easiest course of action is just to obey whoever ordered him most recently. The gates are opened, and the group pass through into the inner palace grounds. The Middenpalaz, an imposing combination of dwarfish framework and human embellishments, looms before them. More guards stop them at the doors. As their escorts handle the explanations, the group continue inside.

They find themselves in hallway, unsure which way to go.

Admund thanks Max for the weapons and grabs his from his arms. Admund buckles his sword belt on as he makes his way quickly up the steps into the palace.

As he continues inside, he approaches the nearest guard, "You there. Where is the Graf? Is he in his quarters or in the throne hall. The Knight Panther who entered here named Sir Elias could be an assassin. We need to secure the Graf and apprehend this Sir Elias. Quickly, show us the way!"

Admund looks to his left and down the hall past the stairs, straining to see if the shape changer is around.

"The Graf?" the guard says (after being shown the document of authority), "he's most likely having lunch at this time. He usually has his meals in his rooms these days. Private like."

Mortus asks if the princess is around.

"Princess Katarina is out, miss," the guard replies. "She's off enjoying the carnival, I expect."

While the group are talking to the guard, they notice Chancellor Sparsam peering around the corner at them. He realises he's been seen, and approaches them (he walks with a slight limp). His eyes dart around wildly, and when he speaks his words run frantically into each other.

"Oh my, what's going on here? Is there some trouble? I perceive an atmosphere of - whatever is the word! - ah, anticipation. Dread. Foreboding. Things of that sort!"

Max bows. "Lord Chancellor, sir. The Graf's life is in danger, so it imperative we reach him immediately. Will you assist us, sir?"

"Oh, indeed, indeed. Indeed. He will be at luncheon, no doubt, yes, assuredly. Up the stairs! Come along!"

The Chancellor moves off swiftly but awkardly towards the stairs. The group follow him. Once upstairs, he leads them into the Trophy Room, which leads directly to the Graf's chambers. Stuffed animal heads line the walls, staring malevolently down with their glass eyes. Looted weapons, shields, and even the horns of beastmen are displayed on shelves and in cabinets, attesting to the martial successes of the Todbringer family.

There are ten Knights Panther standing guard here.

"We must see the Graf at once," the Chancellor declares, "immediately! Open the door at once!"

The lead knight narrows his eyes. "May I ask the reason for this urgency, Lord Chancellor?"

"Don't question me! Open the door!"

"Chancellor, are you quite well? Perhaps you would like to sit down for a moment?"

“We have writs here, from the other Law Lords as well as from Ar Ulric. As well as that I am the Graf’s champion, and he personally tasked me with ensuring his safety and undertaking a special investigation into a threat on his life and to the city itself. I swore an oath. I believe he is in danger right now and it is my duty to get into that room and secure his safety.” Julian will walk towards to the door, intent on opening it.

"In danger?" the knight says, "but Sir Elias is inside, bringing an important message from the Law Lords. What danger can there be?"

But he doesn't stop Julian from opening the door. A shocking sight waits on the other side... two Graf Borises are locked in a deadly struggle. One is strangling the other with a length of cord; the other has a dagger and is trying to stab his counterpart.
