So here it begins. Hail to the Emperor. This is my Altdorf painting blog.

I have been lurking around here a lot and to my mind I am ready to completely join the fun of this great forum. Collecting WHF miniatures since the late 1990s I have always been interested in the empire and its development.

Hauptmann Gustl wants to rise from the ranks and therefore he must recruit lots of troops.

I will go for the traditional city state. I have no special list in mind but hundreds of miniatures to paint.

Age of Sigmar

You are welcome to give me feedback. As a newbie I am always open for some hints to improve my painting skills !

That's a lot of pistoliers!

Are you basing them like the one in the middle of the front rank? I hope so cos that looks good and the bright green is scary!

Thing that mainly jumps out at me that perhaps could help is that the horse eyes are kinda prominent, probably due to them being bigger than human eyes but painted the same way. I've taken in recent times to paint my horse eyes more 'realistic' after seeing other people not like the human effect and not really liking it myself. So that's mainly brown but with perhaps a little fleck of white in the corner if you want, but it doesn't really need it that much. They do have the dark pupil though so you could still put that on. I often try and go for a different brown to my horse so that it at least registers as being painted.

Anyway, just an idea. Look forward to more of your stuff appearing!

Thanks for the piece of advice. I will go over the eyes of the horses once more. Don't worry about the bases - they will be done when I have thought about the right mixture. The based one in the first rank was already done when I got the mini as most of my stuff is bought on ebay. What about the electrostatic grass GW is selling? Would you recommend it?

I would like to go on with two detachments of handgunners:

Detailed shot:

They will support a regiment of swordsmen (WIP).

I like GW's static grass. I've used two or three colours of it and it's worked nicely. Especially when you just use it for say 50% or less of the base, over a textured (brownish or whatever you want) base.

The grass I've used from other companies, whilst cheaper is a lot duller.

I just wish GW did more colours, that's all...

Alright, thank you very much. I will go for the grass and base my minis soon.  :smile2:

After painting a lot of cavalery  the last couple of weeks, which I hope I will be able to present some day, I needed to do something else. That's why I started another detachment for my swordsmen.

So here are the crossbows :

Unfortunately I don't have the crossbowmen of the 6th Edition in my selection, so I have to paint the new ones. To my surprise it was fun so far... but the many details suck a little bit.

Painting 10 winged lancers to be reinforcements for my army. As I have no experience with the feathers so far, I would like to ask you for some feedback and maybe a piece of advice.

Here are 4 of them (WIP):

The feathers have been painted with black basecoat, a layer of bleached bone, top with a mixture of 2/3 bleached bone and 1/3 chaos black, washed with Devlan Mud and then dry brushed with a 50/50 mix bleached bone and skull white.

To my mind they look good on the new horses of the pistoliers.

If you want to see some winge cavalry, take a look at this...

Google "hungarian winged hussar", they were the elite hungarian cavalry from the 18th century.

No matter how good a general you are; if the dice are against you, you will not win.

@ Valetus - Yes Sir, I will. I know that the new goblin green looks crappy. You can correct me if I am wrong but somehow GW changed the tone. The elder version didn't look that bright. Material (grass, movement trays and magnet bases) is ordered and I will base each unit as a whole as soon as it is complete. But to keep me motivated I hope that it's okay to post some more WIP pics. They will be exchanged when a unit is finished.

These are 5 fling scouts:

Somehow I like them in Altdorf colours as they look like sprites out of Super Mario Bros.  :-D

I love looking at painted minis!   The Ogre looks like you can turn him at and angle and that sword that sticks out wont be in the way and his eyeball will be looking straight forward. (His right foot in the foremost corner.)   :eusa_clap:

Thx for your comments. The Ogre Captain will either lead a regiment of halbardiers or pikemen. The halbards or pike will flank his left and right. The standard will be placed behind his huge appearance (in case of pikes). I will work on the eyeball again, cos I am not pleased yet.

@Warlord: I have to admit - the discipline of my troops is very low. No sergeants there to give the boys a proper flogging .

Based some men today and exchanged some pics. Let's hunt some ogres...

Time for another update. Finished some handgunners today. They will support a huge unit of Halbards as detachments.

Here they prepare to give their opponents a proper volley. Make ready!!!

Pics of the halbards will follow soon. Painted almost 25. The idea is to have 50 at the end.
