"lets go" Julian shouts, he jumps up and runs down the stairs as fast as he can, readying both his weapons.

"Good Sir I donīt see where I made a threat, I just pointed something out I donīt have any intent on using my knowledge as I assume you and the councilor too as my friends and allies. The deal that was made with the councilor didnīt have much to do with the saving of the town...well it did but not only and you know that as well as me as stated I donīt want any more recompensations just making sure that even in the future I have allies in this town and around it. I donīt mind that this stays private between us ....I even would it prefer that way. "

Klaus will give the name of the Inn and later return to it....but first tries to find Greta to talk to her.

Max runs along with Julian, and they burst through the door leading to the backrooms of the tavern. The barmaid shouts something at them, but they ignore her and race on. "Here are the stairs, sir!" Max shouts. Julian kicks open the door and charges down the stairs, followed by Max.

They themselves in a cellar, lit by guttering torches. There is a man sitting at a table, blood pouring from his arm. Another man lies dead on the floor. Also on the floor is..... Heinrich, apparently dead. One man stands over him while another is going through his backpack.

Max and Julian both charge towards the two men near Heinrich.

[surprise again! Julian goes first, then Max]

[Julian to hit axe: 89 =miss
to hit hammer = 05, hit. Hits left arm. S3 +d6 roll of 5 - T3 = 5 wounds]

Julian misses with his axe, but his hammer crashes into the man's arm. He grunts with pain.

Max attacks the other one with his axe.

[Max to hit roll = 74, miss]

[next round. Thieves go first!]

One thief attacks Julian.

[thief 2 to hit = 79 = miss]

But he's clearly unnerved by the sight of the angry dwarf, and his blow fails to connect.

The other man broke his sword on Heinrich's helmet, and so draws a dagger to attack Max.

[thief 3to hit roll 36 = hit, hits body. S3 + d6 roll of 1 - 2 (dagger) -T2 -1 armour = 0 damage]

Max jumps back, and the thief's knife glances off his leather vest.

Julian attacks again.

[Julian to hit axe = 87, miss
to hit hammer = 07, hit, hits body. S3 + d6 roll of 3 - T3 = 3 wounds. -1 critical = 92 = dead!]

His blow hits the man full in the chest, collapsing his ribcage and killing him immediately!

Max strikes at his man.

[Max to hit = 84 = miss]

The fast-moving thief avoids the blow.

[next round]

Julian is suddenly attacked by the injured thief who had been sitting at the table.

[Thief one to hit = 16, hits body. S3 + d6 roll of 2 - T6 - armour = 0]

His sword skitters off Julian's amour.

The other thief attacks Max again.

[Thief 3 = 19, hits left leg. S3 + 5 - 2(dagger) - T2 - 1 (shield) = 3 wounds!]

His knife slashes Max's thigh, seriously but not life-threateningly.

Julian attacks back.

[Julian to hit axe 81 = miss
to hit hammer = 76 = miss]

Max swings his axe.

[Max to hit = 11, hits head. S2 + d6 roll of 3 - T3 = 2 wounds]

His axe hits the man in the head, gashing his forehead.

[next round]

The thieves attack again.

[Thief one to hit = 54 = miss]

[Thief 3 = 09, hits Max's right leg. S3 + d6 roll of 4 - 2 (dagger) - T2 - 1 (shield) = 2 wounds]

One thief misses Julian, while the other slashes Max's other leg!

Julian attacks.

[Julian to hit axe = 13, hits right arm. S3 + d6 roll of 3 - T3 = 3 wounds. Already at zero, so -3 critical. 87 = death!]

Julian's axe cuts right through the man's arm and carries on into his chest. He dies with his body a bloody ruin!

Max attacks.

[Max to hit  = 24, hit. Hits left arm. S2 + d6 roll of 4 - T3 = 3 wounds]

He cuts deeply into the thief's arm.

[end of round. Ld test for thief  = 09. Pass]

The thief attacks Max again.

[Thief 3 to hit = 89 = miss]

Julian goes to finish him off.

[Julian axe = 83 miss
hamme = 96 miss]

But fails. Max attacks.

[Max = 18, hits right leg. S2 + d6 roll of 6! (add damage = no) - t3 = 5 wounds. -3 critical ]

Max's axe shatters the man's leg. He collapses at once, blood pouring from his ruptured blood vessels.

Max sways on his feet after dispatching the thief. His trousers are stained with his own blood, and his face looks very pale. "Heinrich!" he says, and crouches down to examine the body (he cries out in pain as he does so, and more blood flows from his wounds). "Oh, he's dead Mr Julian! I wish we'd gone with him.... wait." a puzzled look comes over his face, and he puts his ear to Heinrich's chest. "His heart is beating sir! He's alive. But he's hurt very badly. We have to get help." He tries to pick Heinrich up, but is quite unable to move him.

There's a commotion on the stairs, as a watch patrol enters the cellar. "Stop where you are! What happened here?"

[Klaus]

"I'm sorry if I have misjudged you," the captain says, "but you gave the impression that you would keep our secret only if rewarded... which would be understandable, if unethical. The town is grateful for what you have done. I am grateful. But these are difficult times. It seems that half the watch was in Teugen's pay, even my own aid Holbein. Unraveling his web of corruption will take time. I am afraid I have much to do. Please excuse me."

Klaus leaves the watch house and goes in search of Greta. But he realises he has no idea where she will be. He's sure she will be at Ruggbroder's side, and since Ruggbroder is currently doing his best to grab power in Bogenhafen he thinks she's likely to be too busy to see him. He returns to the inn instead.

Julian obeys the watches command... he is aware that no one will actually know they saved the town as it was all kept secret. but at least ruggbroder and the watch captain should be friendly.

"We have reason to believe these men were involved in some sort of thieves guild. My companion here was attempting to gather sufficient evidence when he was attacked and beaten mercilesslly. We entered just in time to stop them killing him, and attempted to force the brigands to back down. They did now, so we had to fight them in self defence. I know the watch captain and ruggbroder himself would vouch for us as fine upstanding citizens, if it needs to come to that"

[let's have an Ld test for Julian to see how convincing he is... 06. Ridiculously convincing!]

The patrol leader is clearly impressed by Julian's manner. "You know the captain and Councilor Ruggbroder? Well, let's have a look around... why, this is Baumann the landlord! And I've seen this man serving at the bar. Search the crates, boys."

The watchmen search the crates. "It looks like stolen goods sir: marks of all the merchant families on them. Expensive stuff too."

"Well, it looks as though you were right. It's hard to believe this was all going on five minutes from the watch house! Baumann always seemed a nice enough man... Morr keep him. It looks like your friend is more than half dead, sir," he says to Julian. "The boy looks to be hurt bad too. How are you, boy?"

"I'm fine sir, it's nothing really. Please, Heinrich needs help."

The patrol leader pats Max on the back. "Don't worry boy, we'll see he gets to a physician. You too - you've been cut pretty bad. Let's go."

He orders his men to carry Heinrich, and then all of them go to the nearby watch house. The leader sends for a physician, then goes to report to the captain. The captain himself soon comes in. Julian explains the situation to him, and he's happy enough. He does warn Julian not to take the law into his own hands in future, but to come to the watch first. He promises to arrange a reward for dealing with the thieves: he'll contact them later.

After a while a physician arrives. He's a pale, nervous man who speaks so quietly he can barely be heard. He examines Heinrich first, muttering something. He removes Heinrich's helmet, and cuts his hair away around the wound. Then he applies a paste of some sort, and bandages it. Finally, he forces medicine down Heinrich's throat. This wakes him up... he's confused and weak, but alive!

[Heinrich regains d3 wounds... 3, and is considered lightly wounded (will heal naturally). He has a terrible headache and has trouble keeping his balance. He suffers -20 to all % stats for the rest of the day, and -10 for the next two days.]

The physician treats Max next. The cuts on his legs aren't as bad as they seemed. He'll be fine.

[Max regains d3 wounds... 3, and is considered lightly wounded as well.]

The physician mutters something and hands Heinrich some more medicine. Max pays him 10 crowns for his work, and he leaves.

Julian and Max help Heinrich back to the inn, where they can all rest before taking up Mortus's dinner invitation. They meet Klaus at the inn too.

Later that evening, Julian, Klaus, Max and Heinrich follow the directions in Mortus's invitation and arrive at the Emperor's Arms Hotel. Mortus greets them as they enter. Max says, "Hello Mortus! I... bought you this. I hope you like it." He hands her a small box. Inside is a gold necklace, with a single red stone. It looks quietly expensive.

[I guess Mortus has some plans for this dinner?]

Mortus has changed for dinner, she has been shopping.   She takes the box of Mortus, half embarrassed and she smiles sweetly.

"Thank you, Max," she says.   She takes the necklace out of the box and examines it.   "It is amazing.   It is really amazing."   She puts it on, twisting her tightly plaited hair out of the way.

"I have asked the landlord to have a special dinner room just for us," she says.   "If you would follow me."   She leads them into a brightly lit dinner room where a table has been laid out for them.   Mortus sits them all herself, seating Max beside herself and Julian on the other side of the table.   As they sit down a maid brings in soup for them.

Mortus casts an eye over both Heinrich and Max and raises her eye brows.   She waits until the maid has served them and left.

"I didn't want to mention this until we were alone but what happened to you two?"

Klaus has an itching to celebrate a bit more and drink and gamble but sees the dinner at the noble inn Mortus invited them too as a nice opportunity to watch nobles and learn more about their behavior. "Mortus thanks for the invitation....you do look stunning in this new dress. Looks like something more serious than a lucky hit and Max you got wounded too I just hope you are allright...sooooooo what are your plans for the near future guys? I had in mind to accompany Max to Nuln to figure out a bit about my ancestry perhaps you guys would like to join me on my travels? Heinrich I wondered if you ever considered to become a bodyguard of course right now you have more than enough money but some day it might run dry and judging what Greta said the life of a hired sword isnīt half bad."

[Klaus will drink the good wine and order some extravagant good food something stupid like tiny birds for insane money if there is an option to gamble with some of the other people in the inn or make some conversation with people present he will do so]

Max is delighted that Mortus appears to like the necklace. He chats happily to her over dinner, though is careful not to ignore the others either.

When she asks what happened to him and Heinrich, he says, "We did go after the thieves, Mortus, and Heinrich was nearly killed. He bravely went in there alone, but there were four of them - he was knocked out, but Mr Julian and I heard what was going on and got there in time to stop them killing him. I got cut a bit by one of the thieves... I've been hurt so many times over the last few days! Father always told me I was careless, and this proves it!" He laughs. "I really have a lot to learn about fighting... I'm not very strong or fast. I think the gods meant me to be a scholar, not a warrior! Heinrich and Mr Julian did all the work fighting the thieves. I just got in the way."

Max drinks the wine steadily, and orders something solid for dinner like a steak.

"I really do need to go back to Nuln sometime, or I will be thrown out of the university... father would kill me! Well, he'd disown me, for sure. Anyway, I'm certain that I can find proof of Klaus's right to his family name at the library there."

"I donīt think the gods have cut anyone of us to be something but gave everyone of us the chance to become whatever we want to be." Klaus explains in a very serious way....unusual for him, even though the easy smile is still around his lips his eyes ....at least for a moment....seem to glow with anger even a bit hatred.

but the smile comes back to his whole face...
"So what I want to say is ...Max you sure have the bravery that many soldiers lack and with enough training you will be faster and stronger....if you choose to do so. Your quick wit is your biggest strength so you should learn to use it....even if you decide to join the military."

Max doesn't seem to notice Klaus's moment of anger. "Oh, thank you Klaus - it's very kind of you to say that. But I've been thinking a lot about the law the last few days... there's so much injustice around. Look at how Professor Teugen was able to control the watch and the courts, and how Sir Martin could have you and me whipped for no reason. Maybe if I become a lawyer, like father wants, I can do something about it." He looks thoughtful.

Heinrich stays quiet for most of the evening, the alcohol and pain dulling his already not especially vivacious personality. He will speak up at Max's conversation.

"You are probably right about that Max. You are a very brave warrior, and courage will often make up for skill and strength when they lack. With time and practice you could be as good a soldier as any man. It is also possible to fight with your mind as well as your arms. Do not think that your strength of mind is any less impressive than Julian's strength of arms. No matter which way you choose to fight, I trust that you will be a formidable opponent to injustice and corruption."

Mortus puts down her glass and looks at Max, a very serious glint in her eye.

"Our paths are all out there, even if we don't know where the signposts lead.   I would not worry too much about what your father thinks.   If he can not see what you are....." she stops and picks up her glass and drains it before refilling it.   She smiles around at the gathering and then turns back to Max.

"Is university very expensive or would I be able to study there for a little while?" she asks.   "I could go to Nuln with you and Klaus."   She pauses again and shudders, as if remembering something terrible.   "I could write to my house to explain that there were no interesting wines here and that I was going to Nuln to look for some there and that I had met a noble.   I am sure they would understand if I explained it to him."

"Heinrich, it really means a lot to me that you would say that," Max says, "I think you are just being kind, but even so I really appreciate it. I'd love to learn anything you can teach me about fighting... and about the law too. I'm sure you must know a lot, being such a successful bounty-hunter. And it would be fantastic if you could teach me to fight too, Mr Julian sir, and you too, Klaus. You're all such experts.

"I can't disappoint my father though. He's done so much for me, even though I've failed him in so many ways.

"I'm not sure how much university costs, Mortus... I'm afraid my father pays for everything." He looks ashamed. "But I would imagine you could study for quite a while with the money we got from Ruggbroder... and I would pay some of your fee, if you'd let me. Nuln is a wonderful place to buy wine. All the best Averland and Stirland vintages are sold there. And you would do wonderfully well at the university. You are so clever and talented." He blushes as he says this, and looks away.

Julian is drinking great quantities of ale, as well as some wine with his dinner. He ordered the most exotic thing he could find on the menu, being keen to try new and different things.

He is joining in with the fun and generally being loud and bawdy.

as max self depreciates himself once more Julian loudly shouts "NONSENSE laddy, you did just as well as me, and a darn sight better than heinrich" he pats max on the shoulder a bit too hard, causing max to spill his drink.

Julian responds to klaus's question. "Don't know about everyone else but I am about ready to leave this town. New sights to see, always more engineering to be done"

Julian carries on drinking and gets quite drunk. He even uses his dance skills if there is any music.

Max laughs when Julian causes him to spill his drink, "Oh dear, another pair of trousers ruined! Father would beat me for that... but he's not here, so who cares! Thank you for your kind words, Mr Julian sir! But I'm going to get awfully conceited if you keep telling me I've done well!"

He talks animatedly to Mortus, about anything he can think of. A little later, some musicians enter the dining room and begin to play. Julian, now very drunk, gets up and begins to dance. Against all expectations, he's extremely good at it!

"Look at Mr Julian! He's very good... do you like to dance, Mortus?" Max says, "I do... I learned at university. Would you like to dance with me?"

Mortus puts down her glass and stands up.

"I would love to dance," she says, smiling.   "It has been so long."   They dance around the room once, moving gracefully together.   Mortus seems relaxed, her movements are smooth and she is grinning happily.   After they finish the first turn and start on the second she start talking softly, using the music as a cover for their conversation.

"You are a very fine daner, Max," she tells him, grinning happily.   "Is there a lot of dancing at the university?"   For a second she seems nervous, unsure, biting the inside of her lip, and then she leans in and whispers in her ear.

"Is there anybody at the university that would be able to answer some questions about magic for me, would you be able?   If I didn't want to make a big deal of it.   I just am remembering some stuff and would like to talk to somebody about it, somebody that would understand."

When she has finished speaking she lean back from him a bit and continue the dance

[Finlay: ha ha!]

"You're a much better dancer than I am, Mortus!" Max says, as they dance, "I go to a lot of dances at the university. There are formal ones of course, and... well... private parties! We can go to some, if we go to Nuln, if you like?"

Max doesn't look phased at all by her question about magic. He obviously doesn't think it's suspicious for Mortus to be interested in the subject. "I can definitely suggest someone to talk to about magic. I know some people who dabble a bit... in secret. Or if you just want information there are some very good professors who will answer any of your questions. They aren't all like Professor Teugen! You can ask me anything you want, too. I don't know all that much about magic, but I will try to answer as best I can."

"I should come to Nuln then," Mortus says.   "Vacc told me once that magic is like a living thing, that it is attracted to people and things.   I always found this strange.   Maybe there is a professor that could explain it better.   What are the professors in Nuln like?"
