Sibel Kekilli as Shae? Yes please!
 :-D

When I don't know an actor or the name does ring a bell but I can't recall how they look I usually do a Google picture search. Apparently miss Kekilli has done a bit more mature stuff before rolling into acting!

Yes, she has. Then she was cast as the lead in "Head-on" which was quite successful. And then some tabloids picked up the whole porn actress past and basically started a campaign of smear articles about it, which led to quite a bit of public sympathy and support for her, a reprimand from the "Deutsche Presserat" (a self control institution of German media) against the tabloids in question and her parents breaking off all contact.

Since then she has been doing very well as a serious actress, and I really think she'll make a wonderful Shae. Martin commented on her audition tape:
All of our Shaes were hot as hell. But only a handful of them captured that other quality, maybe three out of twenty, and Sibel was the standout. It's easy to see why she has won all those awards. Watching those auditions, any red-blooded male would want to take every one of our Shae candidates to bed. But Sibel made you fall in love with her as well.

Public sympathy and support, eh? I wish it worked that way here in the States. Too much puritan influence, I think.

Hey, no spoilers in here!
 ::heretic::
(OK, it's not a big one, but still.)

Gnu's reading this thread and - hopefully - the books soon. And perhaps there will be others.

We can make an Ice and Fire spoiler thread to talk about the books if you want to.

Best Fiction I have ever read. With characters that grow to your heart and are ripped away by a whim of the writer.

So much interesting background stuff makes the world come alive, political backstabbing, and twists in turn of the stuff going on that leaves you staring open mouthed at the pages, re reading it once, twice, thrice. Turning the book away to re read those pages again. First cursing Martin (the writer) than loving him because you NEED to know how it goes on.

I bought the first few books because of the recommendations on here ....... and cannot get started.

I tried book one, at bedtime one night, and then went to continue the next night and couldn't remember a thing, so I had to start again. Night 3 I couldn't be bothered.

My fault I know - I need to start it when I am properly awake and have time to read a decent chunk. With something like this I feel you have to grasp the 'feel' or geography of the story to get drawn in further.

I have a weekend away with the Mrs in mid-October so maybe then?

Definitely - there is so much to take in at the beginning that reading 2 pages a day half asleep makes no sense at all. But if you're taking a book for that weekend with your Lady, it's a good choice.

I ask a simple question and get abuse.

Mods, ban Aldaris, he is clearly a bad person.

But seriously, how many books are in this series?

What else is new...?

Currently there are 4. Book 5 has been in writing for quite some time, and after that one two more are to follow to complete the series.

Hmm - I thought it was 5 because one is in two parts?

Not exactly - when Martin wrote "A Feast for Crows" (the latest part and number 4) it got too big, so he decided to take a group of characters and place them in the now upcoming one "A Dance with Dragons".

There is a kind of spinoff series of novellas by Martin also set in Westeros called "The Hedge Knight" which plays 100 years or so before the first book. Haven't read them yet, but I heard they're pretty good as well.

I hate to say it, but I didn't like them. Something about the tone just seemed... off to me.

The Gendry guy is too busy dieing of brain hemorages in Skins to be in another program!

Suprisingly I actually quite like Skins.
