"Pride of Altdorf" my Empire Army painting log
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:22:37 PM »
I started collecting Empire back when I was 12, I had a unit of knights panther (for some reason I was mad about those guys) and the empire war wagon! I got back into the hobby a couple of years ago and due to my Daemon army getting all the love, decided that 2011 would be the year of the Gunpowder Monkey. I wanted to keep my list fluffy so, despite having a yearning for a green and white Stirlander paint scheme, decided that with all my artillery and some Empire celebrities that the obvious approach would be to create an Altdorf colour scheme!

My plan is to paint up one unit at a time before starting the next one, hopefully this will mean I actually finish some units! I also plan to paint up a rank to nail the colour scheme before finishing the rest of the unit. Painting around 4k of Daemons last year and a short attention span has resulted in a lot of half finished units/models and a lot of stuttering around with paint schemes. Luckily my girlfriend enjoys the painting so she has begun helping me out this time.

I've begun working on my unit of Reiksguard Knights and have finished the front rank and an arch-lector/warrior priest (conversion from the General plastic kit). Despite the bad press, this large unit have been doing the business for me so far and are proving extremely hard to get rid of! The flaming banner is useful against those bloody regenerating units (such as hydras) and a warrior priest/archlector helps mitigate rubber lance syndrome).

CHAAAAAAAARGE!

Here is the Warrior Priest on his own.

My girlfriend has been given a unit of 25 Greatswords which represents the Reiskguard Foot regiment (hence the colours) and an accompanying warrior priest. She is still halfway through, so I don't think its a fair example of her skills yet. She has OCD levels of neatness so any messy patches will be gone before she considers them finished! These guys have yet to really pay me back in points cost per game but they do make a lot of players think twice about charging in with a single monster or unit. Defensive buffs are my usual choice for these guys as the re-rolls and str 5 attacks chomp through most things pretty nicely without enhancement.

Warrior Priest close up, I gave him one of my Daemonettes heads and a Great Weapon - I'm a big fan of converting my characters to make them unique! Most of my characters have defensive load outs, they are in units to give buffs and not to cause damage so I want them to stick around.

I'll get the finished regiments posted up soon! My plan is to paint a unit of Flaggies next. I love the models so I have been looking forward to them. I figure the Altdorfian Warrior Priests will have picked them up while giving sermons in the surrounding local villages.

My girlfriend and I are then going to have a mini Wizard painting contest. I've converted a Grey wizard and my girlfriend is going to be doing a standard Amethyst Wizard. She has free reign with the scheme so it should be interesting to see what she comes up with!

Lookin' great!  Welcome to the forums, too, and thank you for sharing!  Clean Reiksguard are radical.  That crisp white and red is brilliant.  Your faces are quite nice, as well!  Keep up the good work!

Well it's been a while since I updated this post, here is what I've been up to this month:

First off I built a Lightbox to take pictures so; here are the Reiksguard finished and based from the end of last month.

Warrior Priest / Arch Lector on Barded Warhorse.

And here is my finished Grey Wizard

I (or rather my Girlfriend) has almost finished the unit of Reiksguard on Foot - complete with a few Knight Helmets!

The Warrior Priest

I'm currently working on a secret side project for a surprise for my usual opponent. So should have more pictures of the finished Greatswords and something else soon!

Really, really slowly...

The Reiksguard are all wondering the same thing, especially considering the priest has never fought against a daemon army... Thing is, when you are carrying around a disembodied head, people tend to just leave to you get on with it...

Hehehe, that's true :D

Great job on the Reiksguard knights btw... Both mounted and on foot...
Those guys on foot are especially characterful ...  :eusa_clap:

He probably has something long, sharp and pointy under that robe...

Well the red and blue is coming! The Reiksguard had to be painted up first...

The plan this month though is to get stuck into some state troops...

Your army looks nice. The painting is of decent gaming quality but could use a small wash (using Black Wash to create a bit more detail in the armour). None the less, keep up the good work.

Btw, I love those textured movementtrays with staticgrass. That always looks great :)
Design stays, however, according to my opinion, at least partially something miraculous. -J. Bakema (Architect)

The priest clearly didn't cut the head off the body...he just pulped the body to smush and picked the head up afterwards...

It's a great figure and a great army.

I love the pose of the grey wizard but there is something about the paint job I don't like, it's technically good bit oh just doesn't look right to me. But don't worry, I am a crap painter by comparison so it's just me :)

Just about everything in the army has had a wash of some kind - the only stuff that didn't at the point of me taking the pictures was some of the greatswords - who were only base-coated in that picture.

I think I know what you mean, the pictures don't really do him any justice - he looks a lot nicer when you have him in your hands and can just pick it up and look at him.

Well at the start of the month I was hoping to get a lot more painting done but then a couple of orders arrived and I ended up magnetising my entire army and wiping out 2400points of Beastmen in my first game against them (The Archlector charged, beat and chased down a doombull in a unit of minotaurs and my flagellants took out a large unit of bestigors! Thanks mainly to Speed of Light and The Withering)

Anyway I did see the Greatswords finished finally, well... everything except the Standard, but the gf is planning on finishing that tomorrow and I needed to get pics done today for the Painting Comps. I also finished my side project, got the Altdorf colour scheme worked out and I did my converted Engineer for the comp.

So without further ado:

Greatswords

Engineer

Handgunner Test

Should have more really but I've also started getting back into space marine this month.

Well, it's been a while. Since the rumours are rife about the new empire releases for April I decided to upload some of the empire work I finished last year. I'd love to say I managed to get the entire army painted but I've struggled to find time. I also spent a large portion of the last year on various other projects including assembling ~4000pts of Skaven. assembling / aquiring / painting an enormous Ork 'Space Marine/Epic' army, assembling and aquiring the stuff for a gaming table project including scenery, assembling a small Dark Eldar force and painting more of my Daemons of Chaos.

KarlFranzonnaDragon - so far only produced him once where he ate a hydra amongst other things - this was my 'secret project'...
